Nine cars, redesigned seats, eight bicycle spaces and a two-level Bistro: the new generation of TGV INOUI changes several onboard routines. Here are the features announced by SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom, how they may suit your trip, and what to check for the departure you choose.
The TGV M generation
The figure of 740 seats catches the eye, but your trip will depend more on the trainset configuration, your seat and the services available during the journey. The technical dossier presented by SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom distinguishes between a capacity of up to 600 seats with two classes and a bar, and a maximum of 740 in another configuration. Focusing only on the highest figure therefore gives a misleading impression of the train you might book.
TGV M is the project name for this fifth generation, based on Alstom’s Avelia Horizon platform. TGV INOUI is the commercial offering from SNCF Voyageurs, which also includes older trainsets. A booking under this brand alone is not enough to identify the new rolling stock. This distinction matters in particular if you are looking for a specific layout: bicycle space, a new accessible car or a two-level dining area.
The timeline calls for the same precision. In their press release of May 29, 2026, the two companies announced that they had obtained market authorisation from the European Union Agency for Railways, followed by the arrival of the first passengers at the start of the new school year, in early September, after a pre-commercial running phase. This announcement replaced earlier forecasts. It is not, by itself, proof that a given departure currently uses a new trainset. To plan your trip, start with the information for the train offered on your date.
The features below come mainly from the joint dossier of March 2025, supplemented by the May 2026 press release. They describe the rolling stock as presented by the manufacturers. Our booking advice remains simple: choose a schedule and fare conditions that suit your trip, then check for any essential features before you buy.
The ticket and the seat
Start by comparing the exact stations, arrival time, and exchange or refund conditions shown for each ticket. These factors shape your day more reliably than a photograph of a trainset in an article. If you need to reach a booked activity, leave enough time between your train’s arrival, dropping off your luggage and the meeting time. That buffer is part of your itinerary; no onboard feature can eliminate it.
Next, choose a seat that suits your group. A family mainly wants to sit together; someone with a heavy suitcase will want to minimise handling; a traveller working onboard will prefer a space that suits their computer. Check the seating plan when available, including the class and level shown. On a double-decker trainset, an upstairs seat also means using the stairs.
Storage, toilets and shared spaces are among the major changes to the new train. Their presence does not mean you can ignore your own setup. For a critical need, such as a wheelchair space or transporting an assembled bicycle, look for the corresponding service in the booking. Buying a standard seat does not automatically reserve these dedicated spaces.
Finally, keep your ticket and practical information accessible offline. This makes boarding and finding your way easier, even if your phone has poor reception at the station. Keep essential documents somewhere separate from the bags you will stow once you arrive in the car.
First and second class
The seat updates address two rather different needs. In second class, the technical dossier specifies an extra five centimetres of knee room, achieved in part with a thinner seat back at the same seat pitch. The features presented include an adjustable headrest, individual power outlets, a reading light and a small table that also serves as a phone holder. For a leisure trip, these are directly useful improvements for reading, charging devices and keeping small items handy.
In first class, the advertised seat is five centimetres wider. It features a greater range of electric recline, an adjustable wraparound headrest and a table with storage. There is also space under the seat for a carry-on bag. This option will mainly appeal to those who want more room on a long journey or to work with their belongings close at hand.
However, perceived comfort depends on your build, posture and journey length. Seat specifications help you compare the classes; they are not a personal test report. We recommend checking the fare difference for your chosen departure rather than automatically opting for first class. A second-class ticket at a more convenient time may be a better fit for a short trip.
Bring the cable and charger that match your device. The manufacturer emphasises the modular nature of the equipment, which means it may change during the train’s service life. If you have a specific technical requirement, check the connection type listed for your departure rather than assuming a particular standard is available at every seat.
Luggage and family travel
The presentation dossier announces continuous overhead luggage racks and more space per passenger compared with the recent reference trainsets. Their layout accommodates the addition of a ninth car. Greater capacity does not, however, change how much room your own suitcases take up in the aisles: pack bags you can move and store without blocking other passengers from getting settled.
Gather what you will need during the journey in a small bag: water, glasses, medication, headphones, and children’s essentials. You will avoid reopening a large suitcase on the stairs or near the doors. If your reservation offers a choice of level, take these handling requirements into account. The lower level may be a practical choice for reducing the number of stairs with bulky belongings, subject to seat availability and ticket conditions.
For families, the new equipment described includes three baby-changing areas, compared with two previously, as well as access to microwave ovens for heating meals. The larger, air-conditioned vestibules also offer more opportunities to get up for a while. They remain shared passageways; supervise children and keep access to the doors and stairs clear.
These features are especially useful when the journey overlaps with a nap or a meal. Keep food and changing supplies within easy reach, then ask the onboard staff where the relevant facilities are in your car. You can plan when to move around instead of crossing several cars with a child and the whole family bag.
Bicycle spaces
The three areas described for the new TGV INOUI can accommodate eight bicycles: two in first class, then three in each of the two second-class areas. This distribution describes the train’s design; it does not indicate commercial availability for a particular departure. If you are travelling with an unassembled bicycle, check that the corresponding option is actually offered and reserve it with your journey.
The number of passengers and the number of bicycles must match in the booking. A group of cyclists should therefore check that spaces are available for all their bicycles before finalizing separate tickets. Also check every leg if you have a connection: a reserved space on the first train does not cover transport on the next one.
Plan how you will get to the station and leave it at your destination, too. A pleasant cycling route may start with a less straightforward passage through a large station, with changes in level and different routes through the building. Keep the space reference and the instructions on your ticket, and allow enough time to reach the right car. For a folded or disassembled bicycle, follow the baggage conditions displayed by the carrier when you buy your ticket.
Travel accessibility
The car designed for wheelchair users is one of the project’s major developments. The dossier describes an integrated lift platform and a device that bridges the gap between the platform and the train entrance. The aim is to enable independent boarding using the equipment provided, subject to its operating conditions. Planning must nevertheless cover the entire journey: departure station, train, any connection, and arrival.
The five announced spaces comprise three dedicated wheelchair spaces and two seats with the option of transferring to a seat. These arrangements are not interchangeable. When booking, clarify which type of space suits your needs and what assistance is available. If you will remain in your wheelchair, this must be taken into account from the moment you choose your ticket.
The toilets in this car use the full available width to make movement easier and accommodate a companion. At-seat meal service is also described for wheelchair users who cannot reach the bar and do not have a companion to help them. Check the ordering arrangements and services actually available for your booked journey.
Accessibility work also addresses other disabilities: raised lettering, high-contrast signage, information screens, and aids for locating doors. Explain your specific needs when planning your journey rather than relying solely on the statement that a train is accessible. A connection to another type of train or a platform change may require special arrangements, regardless of the improvements made to the new trainset.
Onboard connectivity
The joint dossier describes a 5G-compatible connectivity architecture to support the train’s connected services and Wi-Fi. Your computer or phone connects to the Wi-Fi network offered onboard. The connection between the train and external networks is a separate part of the system and depends on coverage in the areas travelled through.
So, if you plan to work, prepare tasks that can continue without a constant connection. Download documents, sync the files you need, and check access permissions before departure. Schedule tasks that require a stable connection for a time when you can handle an interruption. This is useful even with newer onboard infrastructure, especially when a call or upload cannot be postponed.
Individual power outlets and phone holders make getting settled more convenient, but remember your fellow passengers, too. The vestibules are described as air-conditioned and better suited to taking a break from your seat or making a call. Use headphones for audio and keep the rooms as quiet as possible. For leisure travellers, downloading a few things before departure is often enough to enjoy the journey without constantly checking the network.
The two-level Bistro
In the new trainset, the Bistro occupies both levels of car 4. The lower level contains the shopping area, with self-service products, refrigerators, and payment terminals, as well as a staff member to assist passengers. The upper level is for dining and has 28 seats, according to the presentation dossier.
This separation makes it possible to take a break at a table rather than simply buy something to go. The seats in this room are shared among the passengers who use it. If your group wants to eat together, be prepared to adapt to how busy it is at the time. Keep your assigned seat as a place to return to, and take your valuables with you during the break.
The name Bistro also appears in the broader evolution of TGV INOUI services. Seeing one on an older trainset therefore does not confirm that it has this two-level room. For meals, check the menu and ordering arrangements for the specific journey. Prices and recipes change; information in an industrial presentation cannot tell you what will be on the menu for your trip.
The backup battery
The system known as “greffon” (backup battery system) uses onboard batteries designed to take over if the main power supply fails. The dossier from SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom explains that it is intended to allow the train to continue, usually to a nearby station, where assistance or an external power supply can be arranged.
Its benefit to passengers is practical: it can help resolve a situation in which the train is immobilized because of a power failure. The dossier reviewed does not specify an operating range that can be used to plan a journey, nor does it guarantee that all scheduled times will be maintained. The outcome of an incident also depends on its nature, rail traffic, and the decisions made by railway staff.
When travelling, therefore, leave the planned buffer for a connection or an activity at your destination. The presence of a backup system is no reason to book an expensive service immediately after the scheduled arrival time. If an incident occurs, follow the information provided by onboard staff and the carrier’s instructions when deciding what to do next.
Environmental figures
Two figures in the dossier should be kept separate: 25% recycled materials used in manufacturing and 97% recyclable materials. The first describes the origin of some of the materials incorporated into the train. The second concerns whether those materials can be recycled at the end of their service life. The recyclability rate therefore does not mean that the trainset was built almost entirely from materials that had already been recycled.
Manufacturers also announce a 20% reduction in energy consumption at equivalent performance, notably thanks to aerodynamics. This technical result should be understood within its comparison framework. It does not allow you to calculate the exact footprint of your ticket directly: that depends in particular on the route, operations and assumptions used.
Modularity affects another timescale: the service life of the rolling stock. Operators can adapt the classes, equipment and some spaces. The seats are designed with replaceable wear parts and structural elements intended to last. For passengers, the benefit is a trainset that can be maintained and adapted over the years. These changes are industrial operations, not an on-demand layout change when you buy a ticket.
A stop in Lyon
If your trip takes you to Lyon, a walk after checking in at your hotel can extend the day without adding another motorized excursion. Keep the first part of your stay for arriving, dropping off your belongings and traveling to the historic center. We recommend scheduling a guided tour with a fixed meeting time that leaves a substantial buffer after your train journey.
The walk from Vieux-Lyon to the Presqu’île featured here is on foot, with a French-speaking guide, and lasts two hours. The itinerary passes through the old neighborhood and includes Bellecour and areas of the Presqu’île. The guide is included; meals, drinks and transfers from the hotel must be arranged separately. The provider asks participants to arrive at the shop fifteen minutes before departure and advises against this walk for people with reduced mobility.
This activity is suitable for a first guided introduction to the city after you have dropped off your bags. It is independent of rail transport: it includes no TGV ticket and offers no guarantee about the type of trainset used to get to Lyon. The offer card contains the latest commercial information.

Why are figures of 600 and 740 seats mentioned?
The figures refer to different configurations. The joint dossier from March 2025 states up to 600 seats with two classes and a bar, and 740 in the maximum configuration. When planning a trip, check the class, location and services of the trainset offered. The platform’s maximum capacity does not automatically describe every train in commercial service.
Are TGV M and TGV INOUI the same train?
TGV M is the project name for the new generation of rolling stock. TGV INOUI is the commercial brand used by SNCF Voyageurs for a service that includes several generations of trainsets. A TGV INOUI ticket may therefore be for a different trainset. Check the equipment you want for your chosen departure.
Can you guarantee a seat on the new TGV?
The industrial sources consulted do not provide a current list of departures for which the trainset is guaranteed. The May 29, 2026, press release announced a launch in early September after pre-commercial runs. For your booking, use the carrier’s current information and confirm that the trip has the equipment you need. This guide does not identify any train number as a guarantee.
Does the Wi-Fi let you work for the entire journey?
The announced architecture makes use of 5G capabilities, but outdoor coverage and network sharing remain factors affecting the service. Prepare your documents offline and avoid relying on a continuous connection for an important deadline. Power outlets and the seat layout make it easier to work; they do not guarantee a particular connection speed at all times.
Can the backup battery get you to the end of your journey?
The system is described as generally enabling the train to reach a nearby station after a failure of the main power supply. The sources used do not provide a stated runtime that would allow the rest of the journey to be guaranteed. Follow onboard updates about resolving the incident and keep the usual time buffers for the rest of your trip.
How can you travel with an assembled bicycle?
Look for a departure that actually offers a reservation for this type of bicycle and add the corresponding space. The trainset presented has eight spaces spread across three areas, two of them in first class. For a group or a trip with connections, check capacity on every segment before finalizing all passenger tickets.
What should you check when traveling in a wheelchair?
Specify whether you will remain in your wheelchair or can transfer to a seat, then check the reserved space and station arrangements. The new car presented has three designated spaces and two transfer seats. Boarding equipment and toilets should be considered alongside station accessibility and any connections.
Is a meal included in the ticket?
The Bistro is described as a dining area with an onboard purchasing service. Whether a meal is included depends on the fare and the services actually sold with your booking. Check these conditions as well as the menu available for your journey. The presence of 28 seats on the upper level does not mean that a table is reserved with your ticket.
