An arrival station, a departure port and a few hours between them: this is often where the success of a trip without flying is decided. From Scotland to Corsica and then to Istanbul, here is how to combine tickets, choose overnight stays and preserve time at your destination. For travel farther into Asia, borders and safety conditions determine the route first.

Time available and destination

The first choice is how many days you want to spend at your destination. With a week off, an outbound and return journey that each take several days leave you with a short stay. Conversely, a night train or boat can fit pleasantly into a week when the arrival station or port serves your destination directly. Count nights and days on a calendar before comparing fares.

For a first trip, we recommend a route with just one major connection: arriving in London and then taking a train to Scotland, or arriving in Marseille and then taking a ferry to Bastia. You will learn to manage tickets from different companies without simultaneously juggling multiple country, currency and transport changes. The return journey deserves the same care as the outbound one: its date often determines the last night you can actually spend away.

The term “overland” refers here to travel by land, which may include sea crossings. It covers very different trips: a week by rail, a stay on an island or several weeks heading towards Asia. To choose, ask yourself above all whether you want to explore stops along the way or reach a base where you can stay. In the first case, the stops are part of the trip; in the second, every additional connection uses up holiday time.

Then map the route using the exact names of stations and terminals. Two places bearing the same city name may require a genuine transfer. For each change, note the local transport option, the luggage you will need to carry and the next available departure. That last detail determines how much the buffer is worth: missing a frequent train and missing an overnight boat do not have the same consequences.

Connections between separate tickets

Calculate a connection from the time you leave the first service to the time you must be ready for the next one. The time between the two departures is not enough. At the port, you need to reach the correct entrance, check in and pass through security before the company’s stated cut-off time. International trains may also require formalities before boarding. Start your calculation with the instructions on your tickets.

Consider a train followed by a ferry. Note the train’s arrival time, the journey to the ferry terminal, the check-in deadline and any internal shuttles. Allow time to get off the train, find the entrance and travel with your bags. The remaining buffer should absorb a plausible delay without forcing you to run. If the first train is the last one that lets you catch the boat, there are few backup options.

We recommend an overnight stop when the next service is infrequent, costly to replace or essential to the rest of the trip. This is a planning recommendation, not a minimum transfer time imposed by every operator. An overnight stay in Marseille could include a visit to the Old Port; a stop in London could leave time for a walk before the train to Scotland. Accommodation also buys time for sightseeing, provided you include it in your initial budget.

For the return, start with your final obligation: work on Monday, an appointment or another booked departure. Then work backwards through the transport chain. Taking your last train immediately after the scheduled disembarkation makes for a fragile return journey. For a long trip, keep a day free to absorb a delay. If you do not have that flexibility, shorten the distance or reduce the number of connections instead.

Through-tickets and protections

Before buying several trains, check whether the seller offers a through-ticket under rail passenger rights, covering the connections on your journey. The European Union distinguishes this from individual tickets purchased separately. If you miss a connection, the rights to rerouting and assistance do not automatically extend to an entire chain of independent contracts. The seller must inform you of the nature of the ticket before purchase.

A single basket or a summary email is therefore not enough to understand your protection. Look for an explicit mention of a through-ticket and the conditions that apply to connections. When several tickets are required, check whether the companies participate in an agreement for continuing your journey and what steps it requires. Keep the documents you receive: they will help identify the transport concerned and the conditions you accepted.

A ferry crossing booked separately must be considered on its own. A delayed train does not, by itself, provide a general guarantee of boarding the next ferry. Read the options for changing your boat ticket and the terms of any insurance. For a long journey, ask in particular how missed departures, accommodation costs and the countries crossed are handled. Exclusions related to official safety advisories can be decisive.

If something goes wrong, contact the carrier or its staff before spontaneously buying an expensive replacement journey. Note the time, instructions and options offered; keep relevant supporting documents and receipts. European rules provide specific rights for the services concerned, subject to conditions and exceptions. An expense you consider reasonable is not necessarily reimbursable under every contract. In practical terms, your priority is to obtain a solution that works with the rest of your journey.

Booking order

Start with the most restrictive segment: a rare private cabin, a ferry with limited frequency or an essential international sleeper berth. At the same time, check that a credible approach journey and return are available. It would be unfortunate to secure your preferred sleeping accommodation only to discover that the only available connection requires you to arrive after boarding closes. Until these three elements fit together, keep several dates under consideration.

Sales do not always open at the same time. Nightjet lists a new timetable service starting on 13 December 2026 and has already published information about some changes related to engineering works. BDZ usually announces that bookings open two months before departure for Sofia–Halkalı, while also noting a temporary reduction in this booking window. A date missing from the booking engine may mean that sales have not opened, the timetable has changed or the service is unavailable; it is worth checking with the carrier.

For the sections you still need to buy, distinguish what is confirmed from what is not yet certain. A changeable hotel booking may allow you to wait for a train to go on sale. By contrast, adding non-refundable tickets around an uncertain segment can quickly commit your entire budget. Check the terms before payment, particularly when comparing a highly restrictive fare with a ticket that allows a date change.

Finally, prepare a simple itinerary sheet: local date, exact station or port, company, booking reference and check-in time. Arrange the documents in travel order. A screenshot can help you retrieve information; however, use the ticket or app required for inspections. Also prepare offline access where the document allows it. A cluttered inbox becomes inconvenient at a border or on a platform.

Nights by train and at sea

Choose your sleeping accommodation with the following day in mind. If you arrive before a long day of sightseeing, a proper lie-flat berth may justify the price difference. Compare a seat, a shared couchette and a private compartment according to your needs: privacy, light sleep, a child, space for bags or ease of access to the bed. The word “couchette” does not automatically mean a cabin reserved for your group.

Nightjet offers several categories and, on some trains, individual Mini Cabins. These compact spaces provide a separate sleeping berth; availability depends on the train you actually book. Toilets, storage and bed arrangements vary by train. Check the train type and category for your departure rather than relying on a general network photograph. If you have difficulty climbing a ladder, the height of the berth deserves as much attention as its privacy.

On the Caledonian Sleeper, the Classic Room has two bunk beds and a washbasin; breakfast is available to buy separately. The Club En-suite adds a private shower and toilet, as well as included breakfast. These differences matter after a day of travel from France: would you like to wash before leaving the train, or does your accommodation allow for a suitable arrival? A better-equipped cabin meets that specific need.

For the ferry, compare the total crossing price with the accommodation you choose. Consider a cabin for the night in terms of the number of occupants and the space available for each person. Prepare a small bag with clothes, medication, water and toiletries. If you are travelling with a vehicle, CORSICA linea states that it is normally no longer accessible during the crossing. Foot passengers must also be able to carry their belongings through the checks and to their accommodation.

Scotland via London

The London–Scotland route makes it possible to plan an initial multi-stop trip without trying to cross an entire continent. The Caledonian Sleeper serves Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Fort William, among other destinations, from London. Choose your arrival point according to what follows in your trip. Staying in Edinburgh and spending time in the Highlands require different arrangements, particularly for local transport and luggage.

For a week focused on Edinburgh, we suggest a day travelling to London, an overnight stop if you would like to visit the capital, and then the journey to Scotland. The sleeper train can also follow your arrival in London on the same day if the timetables and your buffer allow. Check the stations used by both trains and the instructions for the international journey. The Caledonian Sleeper timetable and its engineering notices show the service actually offered on your date.

On arrival, keep the first part of the day flexible: drop off your bags, have breakfast and take a walk depending on how tired you are. If you book an activity at a fixed time, the following day makes for a more comfortable schedule. The Edinburgh Castle tour selected here lasts about an hour and a half and includes admission. A French-language option is listed on the supplier’s page; explicitly select that language for your departure.

The meeting point is outside the entrance to Advocates Close, opposite St Giles’ Cathedral. The guide accompanies the group through the castle grounds; you can then explore the buildings independently. The supplier notes that bags larger than thirty litres are prohibited. For a traveller arriving with a large train bag, leaving it at the accommodation is therefore part of preparing for this visit. Also allow time after the guided portion if you want to explore the rooms.

To continue into the Highlands, first choose a base and plan your local transport. Arriving by rail in a rural area does not automatically solve the final leg to your accommodation. Ask your host how to get there at your expected arrival time, and how to leave again. This check prevents several nights from depending on a local transfer that is still uncertain.

Corsica as a foot passenger

Marseille–Bastia offers a concrete example of combining train and ferry. CORSICA linea operates an overnight service between the two ports. From your departure city, first plan the train to Marseille, then the journey to the designated passenger access point at the port. You can then plan your stay from Bastia based on the local transport actually available on your dates.

In Marseille, the company directs passengers travelling to Corsica to the Joliette ferry terminal. The access points indicated for vehicles are different. The “Port of Marseille” point in a map app is too vague to plan your boarding. Use the information provided with your ticket, then check the company’s messages on the day of departure. Any change to the access point or check-in instructions should be factored in before you leave the railway station.

The arrival time and check-in deadline are shown on your travel document. Passengers on foot go through the checks with their ticket and identity document, then are normally taken to the ship by shuttle. So allow for more than just the journey to the quay you spotted on a map. You do not need to look for a way through a port area reserved for authorized personnel.

We recommend arriving in Marseille early enough to make the transfer calmly and leave time for a meal or a break. Staying the night beforehand is especially worthwhile if your approach train journey is long or already involves several changes. On the return, also leave enough time between disembarking and your train. The announced ferry arrival time is not the moment you will be settled on the platform for your next departure.

Before choosing your accommodation in Corsica, check how to reach it without a car, including on your arrival and departure days. A remote address may work during a summer week but require a different arrangement out of season. Plan the entire journey to the door: arrival in Bastia, any wait, local transport and the final walk. Staying in one well-connected base avoids turning every day into a search for a transfer.

Istanbul via Sofia by train

Sofia–Istanbul extends a European trip to the Bosphorus, with an international overnight journey that requires specific preparation. BDZ confirms a daily service to Halkalı, operated with Turkish sleeping and couchette cars. Reserving a sleeping accommodation is mandatory. To reach Sofia from France, plan the legs separately according to the services available; this does not assume an automatic rail connection through all of the Balkans.

The Bulgarian railway company reports adjusted timetables on Turkish territory from October 10 to December 12, 2026. It publishes, in particular, a timetable effective from November 2. For a departure at the end of the year, use the period that exactly matches your travel night. This precaution is more useful than copying a timetable from an old trip report. On the day of departure, check the information again, as BDZ recommends.

At Kapıkule, Interrail says passengers must briefly get off the train for passport checks. Keep your documents and clothes within easy reach, even if you have already made up your bed. An overnight journey with a border check may mean less sleep than an internal rail journey. The same guide says there is no onboard catering: bring enough to eat and drink, and to see you through the morning without relying on a service that may not exist.

The terminus at Halkalı is in the western outskirts of Istanbul. You will still need to take local transport to your accommodation. Interrail notes that you can take the Marmaray, which also serves the Asian side beneath the Bosphorus. Identify your stop and the last connection before you leave; the international train reservation does not necessarily include this local leg. Also plan a suitable way to pay for local transport.

For a first visit, we recommend spending several nights in Istanbul before continuing. You can enjoy the city and have some breathing room after crossing the border. Continuing to the Asian side is already a concrete change in geography, without needing to claim that the route goes all the way to China. If you want to travel farther into Turkey, check sales and information from the relevant carrier for each connection.

Asia and land borders

A route to Asia must be planned country by country, then border crossing by border crossing. The presence of a railway, road or port does not prove that a foreign traveller can use it. You need to check entry rules for your nationality, visas, direction of crossing, passenger transport and safety conditions. Information that applies to freight or local nationals is not enough to establish that you can cross.

For French nationals, the France Diplomatie travel advice consulted makes several major tourist routes unsuitable as an ordinary travel recommendation. Travel to Russia is strongly discouraged. Travel to Azerbaijan is discouraged unless there is a compelling reason, notably because of the risk of arbitrary arrest and detention. A route drawn across the Trans-Siberian Railway or a Caspian crossing alone obscures these essential conditions.

The Turkey travel advice also notes a partial closure of the land border with Iran, with different crossing rules depending on direction and nationality. This kind of measure makes it impossible to assume there is a continuous route from Istanbul based on an old trip report. We therefore do not recommend a tourist corridor from Europe to Central Asia or China here. Historic routes remain subjects of travel writing; their current feasibility requires separate confirmation.

If you still plan a long overland journey, prepare a record for each border: the authority consulted, authorized crossing point, required documents, date checked and backup option. Confirm that your insurance covers the countries you plan to visit. Leaving by plane may contradict your original plan; if you rule that out entirely, you need another authorized and realistic way to leave. Without one, choose a closer and accessible stopping point.

The full cost of the journey

Compare options by total cost per traveller, using the same dates and level of comfort. Add the approach journey, main journey, seat reservations, any cabin, local transfers, meals and overnight accommodation along the way. Include any extra nights at your destination if a departure does not run on the date you want. A train’s headline fare is only one item in this calculation.

For a couple, compare a cabin advertised for two people with two individual seats, including the same services. For a family, check the actual number of beds and the rules that apply to each child. Avoid mechanically dividing a price by the number of travellers if the fare, cabin or service does not cover the whole group. An itemized booking basket makes it possible to compare amounts you can actually pay.

An Interrail Pass may be worthwhile if you plan several long rail travel days, but reservations are an additional cost on the services that require them. The official website says reservations are not included in the pass and are mandatory for night trains and most high-speed trains. Ferry benefits apply to specific partners and routes. Check the exact journey and supplements; the pass does not make all European ferries free.

To decide between separate tickets and a pass, fill in two columns using your finalized itinerary. In the first, list the tickets actually available; in the second, the suitable pass and all required reservations. Add the same transfers and overnight stays to both. You will also see the value of flexibility: a changeable ticket may be worth more if your itinerary includes a border or a ferry affected by the day’s conditions.

Keep a financial reserve available during the journey. Its purpose is to let you pay for a meal, local transport or an extra night before any potential reimbursement is processed. The amount depends on your route and the number of travellers; no universal allowance can properly cover every itinerary.

Luggage and special requirements

The best luggage is what you can move through every part of the journey. Test it when packed: leaving the train, taking stairs, walking a short distance, and storing it. A large bag that rolls easily through a station can become cumbersome on a shuttle or in a cabin. Choose an arrangement that keeps documents and medication accessible without unpacking everything.

When travelling with children, book sleeping arrangements based on the actual layout of the compartment. A private room lets you settle in for the night at your own pace; two separate cabins may require a different allocation of adults. Bring simple meals, water, and activities that do not require a network connection. Also plan for what happens when you arrive before you can access your accommodation: luggage storage, toilets, and somewhere to sit become part of the itinerary.

For a person with reduced mobility, check the entire journey with the relevant transport operators: station access, boarding, compartment dimensions, toilets, and port transfers. An accessible cabin does not guarantee that the route from the preceding train will also be suitable. CORSICA linea asks passengers to report assistance needs when booking or at least forty-eight hours before departure. Contact other services according to their own procedures.

Bicycles and pets also require checking each leg of the journey. An option offered on one train does not mean it is permitted on the connecting service. Check reservable spaces, dimensions, packaging requirements, and whether a private compartment is required. If taking your bicycle is essential to your stay, it is one of the critical legs to confirm before making the rest of your bookings.

Documents and connectivity

Travelling overland does not remove entry formalities. For the United Kingdom, whether an ETA or visa is required depends in particular on the traveller’s nationality and circumstances. The government website states that an ETA is required for each person subject to the requirement, including children and babies. Check the official process before buying tickets; exemptions and supporting documents must be verified for every member of the group.

For a longer international journey, compare the validity of your documents with the requirements of every country you pass through. Keep a copy somewhere separately accessible, along with your insurance contact details. Required documents must remain available during an overnight border crossing, even if you have stowed the rest of your belongings. Also write down useful contacts somewhere other than your main phone: a dead battery should not wipe out your entire travel plan.

Download local maps and any tickets that can be used offline in advance. Advertised Wi-Fi on a train does not guarantee a continuous connection. At sea, check your mobile operator’s terms before letting your phone select a network. You can work with documents offline and turn mobile data back on only when you know which service you are using.

For the Turkish leg, a data eSIM can help you find the Marmaray, contact your accommodation, and check transport information. The selected Airalo plan covers ten gigabytes for fifteen days in Turkey. It is intended for travellers whose usual mobile plan does not already meet this need. Check that your phone is compatible, install it according to the provider’s instructions before crossing the border, and read the activation terms. This coverage does not automatically extend to the preceding countries, tunnels, or sea crossings.

The return journey and final check

A few days before departure, review notices about engineering work and the conditions for each connection. This final check helps you spot a changed time, a different port entrance, or a service disruption that calls for new arrangements. Also check how to access your accommodation if your train or boat arrives late. Letting your host know can save you from searching for a reception desk that has already closed.

For a trip built around two bases, a short itinerary is enough: confirmed transport, nights, local access, and documents. For several weeks, add any remaining ticket-sale dates and borders that need to be checked again. Do not mistake an intended stop for a confirmed booking. Keeping the distinction clear makes it possible to change part of the trip without losing track of commitments already made.

Before setting off, ask yourself one question about each major connection: what will you do if you miss this departure? The answer might be a later train, a night in town, or a date change allowed by the ticket. If it immediately means buying a costly replacement or crossing a border you have not checked, the itinerary needs simplifying. A shorter route can leave more days for sightseeing, rest, and flexibility along the way.

FAQ

Which first trip without flying should you choose from France?

A destination reachable with just one major connection makes it easier to learn the ropes. A week in Edinburgh via London or a stay in Bastia after a train to Marseille lets you focus your planning on one main connection. Then choose accommodation with good transport links on arrival. Your available time needs to cover the outbound journey, the return, and the days you actually want to spend there.

Can you take a ferry without a car?

Yes, on a route that accepts foot passengers. CORSICA linea explains the boarding process for foot passengers and how they reach the ferry in Marseille for Corsica: check in at the Joliette maritime terminal, go through the checks, then take a shuttle to the ship. Make sure to book as a foot passenger and arrive by the time shown on your ticket. Also check how to get from the arrival port to your accommodation with your luggage.

Does Interrail include couchettes and ferries?

The pass does not include sleeping-accommodation reservations on night trains. You must reserve and pay the supplement for your chosen category. For ferries, free or discounted fares are available through specific partners, subject to their conditions. Check the operator, route, accommodation type, and associated fees before including this benefit in your budget. An individual ticket may still be preferable for a trip with few long rail days.

Does a delayed train protect you if you miss your next ferry?

There is no general protection that automatically covers a separately booked ferry. European rail passenger rights distinguish, among other things, through-tickets that cover connections from separate tickets. Check your contracts, the ferry operator’s change options, and your insurance coverage. An overnight stop or an earlier arrival reduces dependence between two modes of transport, especially when the next departure is infrequent.

What formalities should you plan for when travelling to Scotland by train?

UK entry rules also apply to rail travel. Whether each person needs an ETA, a visa, or qualifies for an exemption depends on their nationality and status. The UK government states that children and babies also need an ETA if they are subject to the requirement. Check which documents are accepted and follow the official process before paying for transport. Separately, prepare for the boarding requirements of your international journey.

Can you travel from Sofia to Istanbul on a night train?

BDZ confirms a daily service to Halkalı, on the outskirts of Istanbul, with sleeping accommodation requiring a reservation. Timetables adapted to the schedule are published through 12 December 2026: use the timetable for your travel date. Plan for the overnight border check at Kapıkule, and bring food and water. From Halkalı, you still need a local journey, including via the Marmaray, to reach the centre or the Asian side.

Can you continue to China without flying?

A transcontinental journey requires independent confirmation for every border and every passenger transport service. The official sources consulted formally advise against travel to Russia and advise French nationals against travel to Azerbaijan unless there is a compelling reason. A partial closure affecting travel to Iran from Turkey has also been reported. This guide therefore does not propose a continuous tourist corridor to China. For a first trip, Istanbul is a sensible stopping point to plan for from Europe.

Is a night train cheaper than a night in a hotel?

It depends on the route, sleeping accommodation, and number of travellers. Compare the total cost of the night train with a daytime journey plus the hotel you would actually need. Include breakfast, reservations, and transfers in both calculations in the same way. A cabin may save you a night’s accommodation without being the cheapest option. Its appeal also lies in comfort and the time available after arrival.

What luggage should you bring to combine a train and a boat?

Choose a volume you can carry on your own over short distances, up stairs, and while boarding. Add a small overnight bag with your documents, medication, and essentials for the journey. Check the rules of each carrier and booked attraction: Edinburgh Castle, selected in this guide, prohibits bags larger than thirty litres according to the provider. Leaving your main luggage at your accommodation lets you visit without it.
