In May 2027, Ascension Day falls on Thursday the 6th and Pentecost Monday on the 17th. With a Monday-to-Friday schedule and public holidays off, four days of leave allow you to take a nine-day consecutive break. For families, Friday, May 7, when there is no school, mainly opens up a four-day getaway. Here are the dates to request and the conditions to check before booking.
Public holidays in May
The May 2027 calendar concentrates opportunities to travel around Ascension Day and Pentecost. May 1 and May 8 both fall on a Saturday. If you work Monday to Friday, neither holiday therefore extends your usual weekend. A public holiday that coincides with a day off does not automatically entitle you to a replacement day; your collective agreement or another agreement may provide for more favorable arrangements.
Ascension Day, Thursday, May 6, offers the simplest long weekend to organize: approved leave on Friday, May 7, links Thursday to Sunday the 9th. Pentecost, Monday, May 17, makes a three-day weekend if that Monday is a non-working day at your company. It may also serve as the solidarity day and be worked. This difference directly affects the number of days you need to request.
These calculations apply to a private-sector employee who has Saturday and Sunday off. They also assume that the relevant public holidays are actually non-working days. In transport, healthcare, hospitality, or with a rotating schedule, use your own work roster as the starting point. The national dates remain the same, but the days actually available change.
Four days or nine days
To compare the options, distinguish calendar days off, which include weekends, from working days of leave to request. In the following table, each day is counted from the beginning to the end of the period, inclusive. If the journey allows, you can leave the evening before after work.
| Time off | Working days to request | Total duration | Main condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, May 6, through Sunday, May 9 | Friday, May 7 | 4 days | Ascension Day is a non-working day |
| Saturday, May 1, through Sunday, May 9 | Monday, May 3; Tuesday, May 4; Wednesday, May 5; and Friday, May 7 | 9 days | Ascension Day is a non-working day |
| Saturday, May 15, through Monday, May 17 | None | 3 days | Pentecost Monday is a non-working day |
| Saturday, May 15, through Sunday, May 23 | Tuesday, May 18; Wednesday, May 19; Thursday, May 20; and Friday, May 21 | 9 days | Pentecost Monday is a non-working day |
| Thursday, May 6, through Monday, May 17 | Friday, May 7, then Monday, May 10, through Friday, May 14 | 12 days | Ascension Day and Pentecost Monday are non-working days |

With four days available, the choice is between two nine-day periods, at the beginning of the month or after Pentecost. The first is based on Ascension Day Thursday; the second on Pentecost Monday. Each allows for a week-long trip with travel days on either side, subject to approval of the leave listed.
The extended break from May 6 to 17 uses six working days. It is better suited to a trip with several nights in the same region or a journey where the round trip takes time. Compare it with your annual leave balance: using six days in May reduces the time available for summer or a company shutdown by the same amount.
How leave is deducted from your balance
The four days of leave in the table correspond to four days you would normally work on a Monday-to-Friday schedule. However, your leave system may operate in business days. Under this system, Saturday is generally included in the calculation, even though it is usually a day off for you. The final deduction may therefore differ from the number of Monday-to-Friday dates.
Service Public distinguishes business days from working days. A calculation in working days is possible if the resulting entitlement is at least equivalent to the statutory calculation in business days. To prepare your request, enter the exact dates, then check how many days will actually be deducted from your balance before confirming. An HR simulation is more reliable than a general calculation of “days off earned.”
The same check applies to part-time schedules and four-day workweeks. A non-working Wednesday, alternating weeks, or a scheduled Saturday changes the calculation. Note your last working day before departure and your first day back at work. These details, together with the applicable rules, allow HR to confirm the deduction.
RTT days can supplement paid leave if your agreement allows it. Their use, any required days off, and request deadlines follow company rules. A plan combining RTT and paid leave should be entered precisely so that the manager can approve the entire trip.
School calendar by zone
National public holidays are the same in zones A, B, and C. Spring holidays are what differ. For the 2026–2027 school year, the official calendar for mainland France sets out the following periods:
| Zone | Spring holidays | Classes resume |
|---|---|---|
| A | After classes on Saturday, April 10 | Monday morning, April 26, 2027 |
| B | After classes on Saturday, April 17 | Monday morning, May 3, 2027 |
| C | After classes on Saturday, April 3 | Monday morning, April 19, 2027 |
On small screens, scroll the table sideways.
Zone A includes Besançon, Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, Grenoble, Limoges, Lyon, and Poitiers. Zone B includes Aix-Marseille, Amiens, Lille, Nancy-Metz, Nantes, Nice, Normandy, Orléans-Tours, Reims, Rennes, and Strasbourg. Créteil, Montpellier, Paris, Toulouse, and Versailles make up zone C. For a child who does not have classes on Saturday, the holidays begin on Friday after classes.
Zone B’s spring break ends on the weekend of May 1, but classes still resume on Monday, May 3. A trip from May 1 to 9 therefore overlaps with school days, even in this zone. In zones A and C, spring break has already ended. The nine-day period after Pentecost also includes school days.
However, the official calendar states that students in zones A, B, and C will have no classes on Friday, May 7, 2027. With Ascension Day on Thursday the 6th and the May 8 public holiday falling on Saturday, the May 6–9 window works for a family getaway. Corsica and overseas territories have separate calendars; do not apply the A/B/C table to all French schools.
Family planning
When both parents work, Friday, May 7 calls for a joint decision: travel together, arrange childcare, or split time off. Check whether the leisure center or childcare arrangement you usually use will be open. A day without classes does not tell you which services are available. This confirmation may be more urgent than choosing a destination if only one parent can get time off.
For a trip with cousins or several families, note each child’s academy and return-to-school dates. Staggered spring holidays limit the dates everyone can travel together; the Ascension weekend brings Zones A, B, and C together more easily. If the group includes a student or apprentice, add their own schedule. Check classes, exams, and work commitments with their school and employer.
You can also save some of your leave for outings close to home. That lets you enjoy a free Friday without booking several nights or making a long journey. The right choice depends on how much time you actually have to spend together: four days together may be easier to organize than a week in which everyone alternates between work and childcare.
Getting Leave Approved and Taking Bridge Days
No classes on Friday does not automatically mean parents get the day off. A company bridge day and the school calendar are separate decisions. First ask whether May 7 is a working day, a day off granted by your employer, mandatory leave, taken from your RTT allowance, or subject to another arrangement. A bridge day set by the employer may also require hours to be made up under the applicable rules.
For an individual leave request, submit the full period and your return-to-work date. Your employer may refuse your requested dates; public holidays do not mean your leave has been approved. In a couple or group of friends, wait until everyone has confirmation before choosing nonrefundable transport. One unapproved absence can shift the whole trip.
Ask explicitly about the solidarity day on Monday, May 17. It can take different forms, including working on a previously non-working public holiday other than May 1. It can also be organized another way. So the arrangements from last year are not enough to confirm that you will have Monday off in 2027.
Trip Length and Travel
For four days, choose a base that leaves you time to enjoy your destination from the first day. Add up the trip to the station or airport, waiting time, connections, and arrival at your accommodation. A route that looks short on paper can take up much of Thursday if it requires several changes. Compare actual schedules before comparing hotel photos.
With two or three nights, one city or a small area is enough. A walkable neighborhood, one booked activity, and a more flexible day let you adapt the plan to the group. With children, allow for breaks and the fatigue of the return trip on Sunday: you go straight back to school or work. Accommodation that makes getting around easy may be more useful than a larger room far from the sights.
Nine days let you keep the first day lighter and leave some buffer before the return. You can stay in one region, alternating sightseeing and rest. Having more days does not mean you need to add more stops: changing accommodation means extra luggage, schedules, and sometimes a vehicle to return. Include these intermediate journeys in your budget.
A Half-Day in Montmartre
To illustrate a four-day bridge weekend without a car, Paris lets you concentrate part of your itinerary in one neighborhood. In Montmartre, the Sacré-Cœur, stairways, and streets on the hill already make for a good walk. The terrain matters when planning: choose suitable shoes and a walking duration that works for your group. A guided tour can fill half a day while leaving free time before or after.
The activity “Montmartre in 3H — Walk, Game and Tasting” combines exploring the neighborhood, a team game, and food stops. The listing we consulted offers the tour in French and English, departing from Rita, across from Lamarck-Caulaincourt station. The tour is shared with up to fifteen participants and requires an average level of fitness. The provider advises against it for travelers with cardiovascular problems.
We recommend this option for a group that wants to do an activity together rather than book a series of separate tickets. The game gives adults and children a shared thread for conversation; the walk is still something to consider for younger children. The listing includes, among other things, breakfast and tastings of bread, cheese, and charcuterie. Tell the provider about any dietary requirements before booking.
For May 2027, check which departures are actually available and select your preferred language. Book this half-day after you have set your arrival time in Paris. The offer card shows available prices and reviews; arrange travel to the meeting point and your accommodation separately.

For Thursday, May 6 through Sunday, May 9, our suggested plan sets aside Thursday for arrival and a first walk close to your accommodation. Choose where to go after dropping off your bags: crossing the city as soon as you get off the train adds a constraint without greatly increasing your sightseeing time. Keep the first evening manageable after the journey.
Friday could include the Montmartre activity if a suitable departure is available. Allow time to get to Lamarck-Caulaincourt and leave a buffer before the meeting time. After the three-hour tour, keep the afternoon free or choose just one more activity. Since Saturday, May 8 is a public holiday, check directly whether the shops and attractions you want to visit will be open that day.
Sunday depends on your return train or flight. A walk near your accommodation or the station makes it easier to collect your bags; a timed ticket across Paris requires more of a buffer. This is a suggested itinerary, to be adapted to the departures actually available for purchase and the group’s pace.
Booking Budget
To choose between two periods, compare the total cost for the same group: round-trip transport, baggage, accommodation, any tourist tax, local transport, meals, and activities. An extra night can cancel out the savings on a ticket. Conversely, arriving earlier may help you avoid a late taxi and enjoy your first evening at your destination.
Also check the cancellation terms. If one traveler’s leave is still pending, accommodation that can be canceled may give you more flexibility. Check the deadline, fees, and refund method. For transport, exchanges, refunds, and fare differences are three separate considerations; read the terms for the option you choose.
No transport or room rates are guaranteed for these bridge weekends. The official dates are confirmed, while commercial schedules, activity slots, and prices must be checked when booking. For an essential activity, first find a departure that works, then plan the other visits around it. A self-guided walk can still have a place in your itinerary and your budget.
FAQ
Can you take an eleven-day trip with four days of leave in May 2027?
The example schedules presented here allow for nine consecutive days off with four working days of leave, assuming a Monday-to-Friday work schedule and the relevant public holidays as non-working days. You can aim for May 1–9 or May 15–23. For the May 6–17 break, you need six working days of leave. An employer-granted bridge day or a special work schedule may improve your options, but you must confirm this with your employer.
Do May 1 and May 8 give you the following Monday off?
In 2027, both public holidays fall on a Saturday. They are not automatically moved to Monday. If Saturday is normally your day off, this coincidence alone does not entitle you to additional compensation. However, a collective bargaining agreement or other agreement may provide a specific benefit. Check the relevant agreement before counting on a replacement day off.
Which bridge weekend should you choose with school-age children?
For Zones A, B, and C, Thursday, May 6 through Sunday, May 9 is the simplest option: Ascension Day is a public holiday, there are no classes on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8 is also a public holiday. Parents still need to get Friday off themselves. The nine-day periods in the table include school days; they are not continuous school holidays. Check the calendar issued by the relevant school for Corsica and overseas France.
Is Whit Monday always a day off?
Monday, May 17, 2027 is a public holiday, but it may be a working day. In particular, it may be used as a solidarity day if the applicable arrangements provide for this. Ask your employer whether this Monday is a non-working day and how the solidarity requirement is fulfilled. If you have to work on the 17th, the period from May 15 to 23 requires one additional day off to remain entirely free, subject to the permitted arrangements.
Do four days requested always subtract four days from your balance?
This matches the table only if your leave balance is calculated in working days under the arrangements in place. A calculation in calendar working days may include Saturdays, producing a different result depending on the period and the public holidays that are usually non-working days. Ask Human Resources to verify the start and return dates. Part-time employees and those with staggered rest days should also use their actual work schedule as a starting point.
Can you use RTT days for Friday, May 7?
Yes, if your RTT scheme and the company’s arrangements allow you to take that day off. Some days are chosen by the employee, while others may be set by the employer. Check your balance, notice periods, and any restrictions before submitting the request. If May 7 is already covered by a company-wide bridge day, ask how it is accounted for to avoid entering unnecessary leave.
Should you choose Ascension or Pentecost if you don’t have children?
Both periods can offer nine days off using four working days of leave when the public holidays are non-working days. Ascension also offers a short four-day break by taking just one Friday off. Then compare travel options, the total cost, and the opening hours of the places you want to visit. For Pentecost, first confirm the status of Monday, May 17: this is the factor that could change the calculation before you start looking for a trip.
