MSC World Asia is preparing for its December Mediterranean sailings, Legend of the Seas is scheduled for the Caribbean in November, and Norwegian Luna is already sailing. To choose among these new ships of 2026, the departure port, the spaces you will use and the full cost of the trip matter more than a collection of records. Here is how to compare three family-friendly options, plan your days ashore and interpret cruise-line announcements.
Three ships, three types of trip
From France, MSC World Asia is especially worth considering for travelers who want to embark in Marseille. Its announced winter 2026–2027 schedule offers the chance to discover a recent large ship while staying in the western Mediterranean. An indoor pool with a retractable roof has practical appeal during a week in December. The ship’s name evokes Asia; its first announced sailing region is in fact Europe.
Legend of the Seas is particularly suited to families for whom onboard amenities are a reason to travel: a water park, a neighborhood for young children, pools and high-altitude activities. Royal Caribbean announced Mediterranean sailings from August 2026, followed by departures from Fort Lauderdale in November. For a year-end departure, the comparison therefore also involves a transatlantic flight and a stay in Florida.
Norwegian Luna combines water attractions, an outdoor promenade, varied dining and accommodations in several categories. Norwegian’s current page now presents it at sea, with a build year of 2026. Its Caribbean setting will appeal to those who want to alternate days at sea with island stops. The cruise line names Great Stirrup Cay, Puerto Plata, Tortola and St. Thomas, among others; check each sailing for the order and inclusion of its stops.
These three ships offer different kinds of large-scale vacations. Our selection compares how they work for travelers, without ranking every launch of the year. A family prioritizing Marseille and city visits may reach a different conclusion from a couple mainly looking for pools, shows and warm weather.
The late-2026 calendar
By late October, some of the first seasons of 2026 are already in the past. Launch announcements remain useful for understanding a ship, but available bookable dates should be checked in the schedule for your departure. For MSC World Asia, the official press release sets the announced start date as December 11, 2026. It is therefore still a future departure in this guide’s calendar.
For Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s press release, published in February 2025 and updated that same month, describes a European season beginning in August 2026 and a schedule from Fort Lauderdale starting in November. It documents the announced schedule; it is not a report of completed sailings. Check the ship actually assigned, the port and the stops in your booking documents.
The same care helps distinguish destination debuts from new builds. Virgin Voyages confirms that Brilliant Lady made its Alaska debut in 2026; its page about the region now lists 2027 voyages. A first season in Alaska does not mean the ship was built that year. Nor does it mean it continues sailing there during winter.
These three dates therefore serve different purposes: the ship’s delivery, its first commercial voyage and your own departure. A cabin sold well before the ship enters service is part of a forward schedule. Your travel documents should identify the terms that apply if the itinerary or ship changes.
MSC World Asia in the Mediterranean
The main selling point of MSC World Asia for French travelers is its announced deployment with the possibility of boarding in Marseille. For winter 2026–2027, MSC describes seven-night itineraries linking Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Civitavecchia for Rome, Messina and Valletta. This lets you compare the cost of getting to Marseille with that of departing from Spain or Italy, rather than choosing based only on the cabin price.
The ship follows the World Class layout, with seven districts. The Harbour brings together some of the family activities; the clubs cater to different age groups, from babies to teenagers, according to the arrangements presented by the company. The seven announced pools include one with a retractable roof. For a winter departure, consider indoor spaces and opportunities to relax inside as well as the views from the sun-soaked decks.
MSC announces more than forty bars, lounges and restaurants combined. This total describes a variety of venues, not forty restaurants included in the fare. The brands presented include Butcher’s Cut, Kaito Sushi and Teppanyaki, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, and the Masters of the Sea pub with its microbrewery. The right question is which meals your fare includes and which reservations you actually plan to make.
The Yacht Club, announced with 144 suites, adds reserved spaces, a restaurant, a lounge and dedicated services within the large ship. It will appeal to those who want to use the shared facilities while returning to a more intimate setting. Compare this category based on its total price and amenities with the other suites you are considering.
Finally, distinguish between seasons: in the summer 2027 program described by MSC, Naples replaces Civitavecchia among the listed ports of call. The label “Western Mediterranean” is therefore not enough to choose a trip if Rome is your main destination.
Legend of the Seas for Families
With Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean continues the Icon Class model: eight districts and a high concentration of onboard activities. Category 6 brings together the water slides, Crown’s Edge combines a high ropes course with thrills, while Surfside is designed for young families. This layout lets several generations split their day across different areas before meeting again for meals or a show.
The announced program includes seven pools, including Royal Bay, as well as The Hideaway, reserved for adults. Adult-only areas may appeal to parents traveling with other relatives, so each person can spend time with the children in turn. For a family with very young passengers, check the rules for admission, swimming and access to attractions for their age and height before making any particular facility the main reason for booking.
The program announced from Fort Lauderdale includes six-night trips in the Western Caribbean and eight-night trips in the Southern Caribbean. Royal Caribbean includes its private destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Choosing between the two durations also depends on the days off needed to travel to Florida and return, as well as the preferred balance between time at sea and exploring ashore.
For a first cruise on this type of ship, identify three places on the deck plan that you will use every day: the cabin, the main dining room and your preferred family area. Their proximity may matter more than a high deck. A well-located cabin can make the days easier for a family that regularly returns to rest. Getting around the ship, using the elevators and keeping appointment times all factor into planning the trip.
Norwegian Luna and Outdoor Living
Norwegian Luna makes a particular feature of Ocean Boulevard, an outdoor promenade connected to the Infinity Beach areas and their infinity pools. This connection to the outdoors will interest travelers who enjoy reading, walking or sitting by the sea between activities. The Observation Lounge also offers a glass-enclosed indoor space for enjoying the scenery. On a trip with several days at sea, these places deserve a spot in your ship comparison.
The Aqua Slidecoaster delivers the spectacle, with its two tracks and hybrid water slide/roller coaster design. Glow Court features an interactive LED court. When choosing a family cruise, consider how the children and adults would actually spend their day: attractions, swimming, resting in the cabin, meals and the evening show. This helps you choose a cabin category and pace that everyone can manage.
Norwegian lists a capacity of 3,565 passengers at double occupancy. This figure assumes two people per cabin; it does not necessarily describe the number of travelers on a family sailing. Capacity figures should always be read alongside their definition, especially when comparing cruise lines that use different conventions.
Accommodation options include The Haven, balcony cabins, inside cabins and solo categories. According to the official description, access to Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only area, requires a pass or a cabana. Treat access as a specific budget choice. Meals at Indulge Food Hall are described as included, while specialty restaurants are a separate offering. This distinction helps you plan an enjoyable week without automatically adding multiple extra charges.
The Cabin and Shared Spaces
When comparing cabins, start with the actual occupancy: two adults, a family sharing a room or a solo traveler. Extra berths, the usable floor area once the beds are set up and the path to the bathroom all affect daily comfort. Check the plan for the exact category, then the plan for the assigned cabin when it becomes available. A photo of a suite does not represent every room on the ship.
A balcony provides a private outdoor space to read, get some fresh air and watch the ship arrive in port. Its value increases if you plan to spend time there. If you expect to spend nearly all your days ashore or using the shared facilities, another category may leave more of your budget for excursions. Compare the extra cost for the entire cabin and the full duration, with the same included amenities.
For location, read the deck plan vertically: what is above, below and opposite the cabin. Restaurants, theaters, sports facilities and technical areas are not used in the same way as a deck of cabins. Clearly state any needs for quiet, accessibility or proximity to elevators. Check with the cruise line whether an accessible category is available in the configuration you need.
On these large ships, the space you can actually use also depends on the category you book. A private lounge, reserved deck or suite restaurant may not be accessible to all passengers. Make a list of the places that appeal to you, then check which ones are available with your booking. This will help you avoid comparing a standard experience with images of an exclusive space.
Meals and Extras
Dining variety is one of the most visible selling points of new ships. It covers several different things: an included dining room, buffet, casual counters, specialty restaurants and drinks at the bars. Packages vary by cruise line, category and the offer you choose. To get a clear quote, identify the meals already covered, then decide which paid dining experiences you would like to set aside an evening for.
On MSC World Asia, the total number of bars, lounges and restaurants gives an idea of the range of choices. On Norwegian Luna, Indulge Food Hall is an example of a dining venue announced as included, distinct from the specialty restaurants. For Legend of the Seas, the variety of venues should likewise be considered in relation to the benefits included in your booking. None of these lists is a reason to assume that every menu item and every drink is included.
Compare a drinks package with your expected consumption and the people it needs to cover. Check which drinks are included, any limits, service charges and cabin-wide conditions. For specialty dining, check the number of meals covered, which restaurants are eligible and how reservations work. One dinner chosen for a special occasion may be enough for your trip.
If you have an allergy, a medically required diet or strict dietary needs, submit your request before departure and confirm the onboard procedure. A wide selection of cuisines does not guarantee that individual dietary needs will be accommodated. For families, meal times, children’s eating habits and the availability of simple food also matter when choosing a ship.
The Full Cost of the Trip
The price you compare must correspond to the same group of travelers, the same dates, and an identifiable cabin category. An advertised price per person based on double occupancy does not directly translate into a family budget. Check the total for the booking: cabin, taxes, applicable service charges, included amenities, selected add-ons, and cancellation terms. Keep the itemized quote for the exact fare you choose.
Then add the cost of getting to the port. For Marseille, this may include the train, a hotel, parking, or a transfer. For Fort Lauderdale or Miami, factor in the international flight, baggage, ground transportation, any required formalities, and nights before or after the cruise. Two cruises with similar advertised prices can lead to very different expenses once you have planned the journey from home.
Days ashore are another expense: visits, meals, transportation, and activities. A walking tour and an excursion with a vehicle do not require the same budget. Plan for essential activities, then leave some days more open if you want to keep costs down. The prices and reviews for the two tours featured below are collected in their respective cards; they are for shore-based offers, separate from the cruise fare.
Finally, include flexibility in your comparison. A deposit, a payment deadline, a changeable airline ticket, and a cancellable tour meet different needs. Read the terms for each separate purchase. Keeping some money in reserve for a change in transportation or an extra night may be more useful than paying for an amenity you will barely use during the week.
Port calls and time ashore
A port call begins with disembarkation and ends at the deadline for returning to the ship. In between, the available time must cover travel, visits, and an appropriate buffer. The name of a major city in an itinerary may refer to the port that serves it: MSC lists Civitavecchia for Rome, for example. Travel time is part of the day and should be considered before booking a city tour.
An excursion sold by the cruise line and an activity purchased independently do not necessarily have the same terms. For an outside booking, note the exact meeting point, time, duration, language, and return arrangements. The word “excursion” alone does not establish that pickup is provided at the terminal. A city-center tour may require you to make your own way to meet the guide.
For a first trip, we recommend avoiding tight connections on embarkation day and scheduling an important visit on a separate day ashore. This suggested plan leaves room for delays, luggage, and exploring the city. It does not replace the check-in time set by the cruise line, which you must still meet.
The pace of the port calls also affects your choice of ship. Busy days in Mediterranean cities leave less time for onboard attractions. A cruise with more days at sea makes walks, lounges, and pools a bigger part of the vacation. Count the days of each type before paying extra mainly for life on board.
An extra day in Barcelona
For a trip starting in Barcelona, a full day before embarkation lets you add a visit without squeezing it in between the airport and the terminal. The Sagrada Família is a specific option for anyone interested in Gaudí’s architecture: sculpted façades, branching columns, light in the nave, and a museum dedicated to the project. The idea is to set aside a time slot for one monument, then leave the rest of the day for the city and departure preparations.
The selected tour lasts one hour and thirty minutes and is led by an English-speaking guide. The listing includes admission to the basilica and museum; the meeting point is Plaça de Gaudí, and you must arrange your own transportation from your accommodation. The group tour is a good fit if you want a structured explanation in English. Consider the tour’s operating conditions and security checks before making your way to the group.
Book this activity for the day you will actually be in Barcelona. It is independent of the cruise line and does not include a transfer to the ship. If Barcelona is only a port call on your cruise, first make sure the times and transportation fit your time ashore. If you are embarking in Marseille, this suggestion obviously does not require you to stay in Spain: choose a tour based on the port you actually select.

View activityLittle Havana before the Caribbean
In Miami, a day ashore can offer a change of pace from the beaches and amenities on board. A walk through Little Havana lets you explore the neighborhood through its food, social gathering places, and cultural landmarks. The selected tour combines tastings and walking, including Domino Park and a stop focused on cigar-making, according to the operator’s itinerary.
The tour lasts two hours and thirty minutes, with an English-speaking guide and tastings described as equivalent to a meal. It starts at the Tower Theatre, 1508 SW 8th Street. This option is for a guided introduction to the neighborhood during a stay in Miami; plan your trip to the meeting point. The operator states that it cannot accommodate severe food allergies or vegan diets.
For a Norwegian Luna trip, check the departure port you have chosen before deciding where to stay. For the Legend of the Seas, advertised as departing from Fort Lauderdale, Miami is an additional stay that requires a separately arranged ground transfer. The two cities should not be treated as a single terminal. We recommend scheduling the tour on a day when you are genuinely available, rather than relying on a morning disembarkation to get you to the group immediately.

View activityThe cruise lines’ environmental claims
MSC says the World Asia will use liquefied natural gas propulsion and will be able to connect to shore power. Royal Caribbean also mentions LNG, shore power, and heat recovery for the Legend of the Seas. These features describe specific technical capabilities. Their impact should be assessed under actual operating conditions and with consideration of the energy source used.
Shore power allows a ship to draw electricity from the port grid when compatible infrastructure is available and used. A ship’s ability to connect does not, by itself, prove that it will do so at every port call. LNG, too, must be assessed across the fuel’s life cycle. The ability to use another fuel in the future does not, on its own, document the fuel consumed during your trip.
The International Maritime Organization outlines a method that accounts for emissions from fuel production through to its use on board. Its 2023 strategy aims for net-zero emissions around 2050 across international shipping as a whole. This industry-wide target does not certify an individual cruise ship or provide the carbon footprint of your cabin.
To compare these claims, look for the measurement period, scope, reference point, and operating results when published. Without comparable data, we do not rank these three ships by a quantified climate-performance measure. Port access and the complete itinerary are also part of your travel choice, particularly when a departure can be reached without a long-haul flight.
FAQ
Which new ships in 2026 should you compare for your first cruise?
The MSC World Asia, Legend of the Seas, and Norwegian Luna offer three useful points of comparison: a Mediterranean departure with Marseille in the announced program, a large family-oriented Royal Caribbean ship, and a Norwegian offering that focuses in part on outdoor spaces. Start with the port you can reach and your dates, then consider the cabin, included meals, and pace of the port calls. This selection deliberately focuses on three large cruise ships rather than cataloging every new ship of the year.
Can you board the MSC World Asia in France?
MSC lists Marseille among the embarkation ports for its Mediterranean program, which is scheduled to begin on December 11, 2026, according to the press release reviewed. The winter itineraries presented last seven nights and also include Barcelona, Genoa, Civitavecchia, Messina, and Valletta. Choose the dated departure from Marseille and review its confirmation; the port’s inclusion in a general schedule does not replace the information in your booking.
Does the MSC World Asia sail in Asia?
Its first announced program is in the western Mediterranean. MSC explains that the World Class series names pay tribute to the continents, so the name Asia does not indicate its departure area. To choose a cruise in Asia, search directly for your preferred destination and dates, then check which ship is actually assigned to that itinerary.
Does the Legend of the Seas depart from Miami?
The Caribbean program presented by Royal Caribbean announces departures from Fort Lauderdale starting in November 2026. Miami may be a place to stay before or after your cruise, but transfers between your accommodation and the port must be arranged based on the confirmed terminal. Also check your arrival airport and schedule: a land reservation in Miami does not automatically include transportation to Fort Lauderdale.
Are all restaurants and attractions included?
Included amenities depend on the cruise line, cabin category, and fare booked. Norwegian lists meals at Indulge Food Hall as included and the Vibe Beach Club as available with a pass or cabana. Specialty restaurants should be checked separately. For each quote, identify which meals, drinks, and activities are covered before adding packages; the number of venues advertised on board does not tell you how they are priced.
Should you choose a cabin with a balcony?
A balcony is a good fit if you want private outdoor space and expect to use it while at sea or arriving in port. An interior cabin may suit a stay focused mainly on shore excursions and shared facilities. Compare the price difference for your entire group, then consider the location and sleeping arrangements. The best category depends on how you plan to use the cabin, how much quiet you need, and your total budget.
Can shore excursions be booked separately?
Yes, after checking each activity’s terms and whether it fits your trip. The two offers presented here are a visit to the Sagrada Família in Barcelona and a food tour in Little Havana, Miami. Neither includes the cruise nor a guaranteed return to the ship. We recommend booking them first for an extra day on land, with transportation to the meeting point arranged separately.
Is a new LNG-powered cruise ship emissions-free?
No. The fuel, its production and transport, and its use on board all factor into an assessment of the trip. Shore power also depends on the facilities available and whether they are used. The IMO assesses fuels over their life cycle and sets collective targets for the sector. Comparing two ships requires operational data covering the same scope; the year a ship was built alone does not provide that comparison.
