Regent Street's sweeping illuminated wings soar above the roadway, framed by stone façades and red buses. The top deck of a bus is an enticing vantage point from which to admire them. Yet for a first evening, we would choose to walk: London's festive lights continue into the streets of Carnaby and beneath the glass canopy of Covent Garden, amid shop windows and festive displays.

Regent Street, beneath the angels' wings

Regent Street is best taken in lengthways. The sweeping curve of the avenue, the Portland stone façades and the angels suspended one after another create an instantly recognisable scene. From the pavement, you can take your time watching the wings stand out against the evening sky, then seek out another angle at the next crossing.

It is also where a bus tour makes the most sense. From the top deck, your view rises above the traffic, bringing you closer to the decorations. The perspective shifts as the vehicle moves forward: you travel right through the lights rather than watching them from a fixed spot.

‘The Spirit of Christmas’ is set to return on Thursday 5 November 2026. For the switch-on, Regent Street will be pedestrianised from 5 pm to 9 pm. This opening evening will therefore be spent among fellow pedestrians, on an avenue unusually free of traffic.

Carnaby takes on a 1990s palette

On Carnaby Street, the lights are part of an intimate setting. The street is narrow, lined with boutiques, and the installations fill the space overhead. You catch sight of a shop sign, then a garland, before wandering into an adjoining street. It is a walk tailor-made for detours.

The area refreshes its look regularly. For Christmas 2026, ‘Press Play on Christmas’ will draw on British 1990s nostalgia, bathed in neon-bright colours. The switch-on is scheduled for Wednesday 4 November.

This is the stroll to keep on your itinerary if you love festive window displays as much as grand light installations. At the end of Carnaby, Liberty adds its timber-framed façade to the scene. It is easy to spend time in this compact quarter without rushing to see every single decorated street across London.

Access to the lights and the switch-on evening is completely free. The free pass offered by the organisers gives access to perks during the event; it is not required to enter the street.

Carnaby changes its look each year: pictured here is the ocean theme from December 2019. In 2026, organisers have announced a 1990s-inspired concept.

Covent Garden: stepping beneath the glass canopy

Covent Garden's bells reveal themselves as you step inside the market. They hang from the green cast-iron roof, suspended among giant red baubles and Christmas trees. You take in the display from the colonnades, wandering from one shopfront to the next, before emerging onto the West Piazza to see the towering Christmas tree.

The switch-on will take place on Thursday 12 November 2026. This year, Covent Garden has also announced trees inspired by West End musicals, including MAMMA MIA! and Hadestown, as part of ‘The Theatre of Christmas’.

Allow plenty of time for this neighbourhood. Much of its charm lies inside the Market Building, away from the main thoroughfares taken by open-top bus tours.

The West End from the top deck

A bus offers a perspective you simply cannot get from the pavement. Façades take centre stage, the lights hang directly above your seat, and floodlit landmarks extend the journey well beyond the shopping streets. After a day spent in museums or walking across the city, you can simply sit back and watch London glide past.

On the Golden Tours route featured here, Regent Street shares the itinerary with Piccadilly Circus, the Strand and Big Ben. Departures leave from Belvedere Road, near the London Eye. The tour lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes, led by an English-speaking guide, and takes place entirely on board. This winter's schedule begins on 7 November 2026.

It is an ideal option for a first look at London by night. It provides a broad overview, whereas Carnaby and Covent Garden call for lingering and exploring on foot. Both outings can comfortably fit into the same trip.

If you opt for the open-top deck, wrap up in a genuinely warm coat: you will be sitting still for much longer than on a walk. It is also worth checking your seat category when booking, as views through the lower-deck windows offer a very different experience.

If you only have one evening for the Christmas lights, we would spend it on foot in the West End. The streets are free to explore, and both Carnaby and Covent Garden deserve time to linger. A bus tour comes into its own if you also want to see London's monuments lit up at night, or if you prefer a sit-down tour after a busy day on your feet.
