For a first trip to Thailand, fourteen days are enough to connect Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Krabi coast, with three main bases. Over three weeks, the same route adds a forest stop in Khao Sok and more free days. Here is how to distribute your nights, visits and travel days to enjoy both the North and the coast without changing hotels too often.
The 14-day itinerary
The Grand Palace and temples along the Chao Phraya, cooking classes in Chiang Mai, then the cliffs and islands of Krabi: these three stops offer very different days. However, the distance between them means two major domestic journeys. We keep those days light, with a final night in Bangkok before the international departure.
The itinerary includes fourteen days in Thailand and thirteen nights. If your two weeks also include flights from France, subtract the days actually spent flying before using this schedule. A late arrival in Bangkok does not count as a sightseeing day.
- Days 1 to 3: Bangkok, with three nights at the same hotel.
- Days 4 to 7: Chiang Mai, with four nights and the arrival day set aside to settle in.
- Days 8 to 12: Krabi, with five nights in Ao Nang or Railay.
- Day 13: return to Bangkok and spend the final night near convenient access to your airport.
- Day 14: international departure.
This arrangement leaves two full days in Bangkok at the start, three in Chiang Mai and four on the coast. It suits a trip combining culture, cuisine and swimming. For a mainly beach-focused stay, skip the North instead: those freed-up days will be more useful by the sea than spent on extra journeys.
The season and choice of coast
For this itinerary ending on the Andaman coast, December to February is our preferred planning window. It allows you to combine the North and Krabi in one trip while keeping an eye on local bulletins. Heat, rainfall and sea conditions vary enough that seasonal averages can never replace checking the conditions on the day.
In November, keep your sea excursions flexible. In March, plan for more breaks and early-morning visits; if air quality becomes poor in the North, you should be able to change your outdoor plans. For anyone with respiratory sensitivities, this check deserves as much attention as the forecast temperature.
Koh Samui’s coast has a different rainfall pattern. France Diplomatie notes the difference between this eastern coast and much of the rest of the country. So at the end of the year, replacing Krabi with Samui does not guarantee better weather. If you are traveling in another season, compare the two coasts first, then rebuild your transport plans around the one you choose.
At Khao Sok, humidity and showers are part of the preparation, even when the beaches are enjoying fine weather. A lightweight waterproof jacket, suitable shoes and a waterproof cover for your devices are still useful. Guides and park authorities determine which activities are suitable for the conditions.
Bangkok, days 1 to 3
Day 1 is for getting to the hotel, recovering from the flight, and exploring the neighborhood on foot. Staying near a metro station, the BTS, or a pier makes the next two days easier. Check the actual route from your room: a station on the far side of a major intersection can make a noticeable difference when traveling with luggage or children.
Day 2 brings together the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun. Wat Phra Kaew is visited within the palace grounds; Wat Pho is on the eastern bank of the river, and Wat Arun is on the opposite bank. This geography makes for a day organized around the Chao Phraya, with a river crossing and breaks rather than a string of trips across the entire city.
Plan to wear clothing that covers you from the outset. The Grand Palace imposes restrictions in particular on sleeveless tops, shorts, and transparent or torn clothing. Returning to the hotel to change would cost you part of the morning. Keep water on hand and allow time to rest in the shade during the hottest hours.
The selected private tour combines these three sites with an English-speaking guide and admission. It lasts five to six hours, including travel time. A private vehicle depends on the option you choose; check this when booking. We have placed it on Day 2 to visit the royal and religious sites together, then leave a freer day in the capital.
Day 3 can be split between a riverside walk, a shopping district, and a leisurely meal. Choose one area to explore rather than several far-flung addresses. If you want to revisit a temple or spend more time taking photos, this day can accommodate it without affecting your departure for Chiang Mai.

Day 4 is a travel day. Choose your transport before scheduling an activity: a flight, a transfer from the airport, and checking into the hotel take up a good part of half a day. A short walk and dinner are enough for your arrival-day plans. Four nights at the same address then let you explore the city without repacking.
Dedicate Day 5 to the historic center and its temples. Lanna heritage, handicrafts, and cuisine are the main themes of this northern stop. Take time to notice the courtyards, rooftops, and customs at places of worship; remove your shoes where indicated and be discreet in prayer areas.
Day 6 can be spent at Doi Suthep, in the hills above Chiang Mai. The golden chedi and temple buildings give this outing a clear destination. Arrange round-trip transport before setting out, and allow extra time to reach the shrine. Views depend on the weather and visibility; the temple itself is also a reason to visit.
Set aside Day 7 for a cooking or handicraft activity. The selected evening class starts at a market, then continues at individual cooking stations. It lasts about four hours, is conducted in English, and welcomes a maximum of ten participants. Included pickup covers hotels within an advertised three-kilometer radius of Kom Market: confirm your address with the school.
This time slot works well after a quiet morning in town. It connects the ingredients you saw at the market with the preparation techniques, and you leave with an online recipe book. Tell the school about allergies and dietary restrictions before purchasing so it can confirm what accommodations are possible. Choosing a cooking class does not automatically guarantee that everyone's dietary needs can be met.

Day 8 takes you south. Check which connections are actually available for your date; any layover will change the time spent traveling. On arrival, go straight to your accommodation. Leave your first evening on the coast free, with no excursion scheduled at a fixed time.
Ao Nang is a convenient land-based base, with boat and transfer departure points. Railay puts you at the foot of the cliffs, but getting there by boat means you need to plan ahead for luggage and the return trip. For these five nights, choose one base. Changing hotels between nearby beaches often takes as long as a walk or swim.
Spend Day 9 in the Railay area, exploring its beaches and limestone scenery. Plan a simple outing, with your return arranged if you are staying elsewhere. Tide times, waves, and boarding arrangements matter just as much as distance. Easy-to-remove shoes and a bag that protects your belongings make it easier to move between the pier, boat, and beach.
Schedule the island trip for Day 10, then keep Days 11 and 12 fairly open in case you need to reschedule or want to do something else. The selected tour combines a six-hour morning cruise, breakfast, and opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Meeting points are in Ao Nang and Railay; hotel transfers must be booked separately.
The advertised route includes the Chicken Island, Tub, and Poda areas. A stop at a sandbar depends on the tide, and the order of stops depends on sailing conditions. When choosing an option, confirm the group size and the price for your travelers. English, Spanish, and Thai are offered; this listing does not confirm French-language guiding.
Finally, keep one day free of boat bookings. You can spend it at the beach, rest, or explore the area around your base. The day after a boat trip is also a good time for a short land-based activity. That way, you can still enjoy Krabi if sea conditions change during your stay.

On Day 13, return to Bangkok and spend the night there. This buffer is especially useful when you have bought your domestic ticket and international flight separately. A delay on the first leg could affect a connection that the airlines do not treat as part of a single journey.
Check the airport name on every ticket. Bangkok has several airports, and the journey between them crosses a large urban area. Choose your final night's accommodation based on your international departure, check-in time, and the transport available at that hour. A hotel that is convenient for an evening walk may not be practical for an early-morning takeoff.
For Day 14, keep your plans in proportion to your flight time. If you have a late departure, a local walk and a meal still leave time to collect your luggage. An excursion outside Bangkok would add another journey at a time when punctuality becomes the priority.
Three weeks including Khao Sok
With twenty-one days on the ground, add actual sightseeing days to the stops already chosen and three nights in the Khao Sok region. This extension adds the forest and Cheow Lan Lake while preserving a north-to-south progression. The itinerary then totals twenty nights.
- Days 1 to 4: Bangkok, four nights to spread out sightseeing and walks.
- Days 5 to 9: Chiang Mai, five nights with an extra free day.
- Days 10 to 12: Khao Sok, three nights and two days devoted to the region.
- Days 13 to 19: Krabi, seven nights at the same base.
- Day 20: return to Bangkok, one night before departure.
- Day 21: international flight.
On day 10, travel to an airport suited to your onward ground transfer to Khao Sok. Surat Thani, Phuket and Krabi are possible gateways; check the connection you choose from Chiang Mai for your travel date. Request a pickup with a precise location, time and final destination, then leave this day for travel and settling in.
For a first visit, three nights in the inland area allow time for a guided hike and a day at the lake without changing accommodation every evening. One night on Cheow Lan Lake can replace one of these nights, provided you book the corresponding transfer and boat. The village and the lake accommodations do not share the same arrival point: give your transport provider the exact name of each stop.
Day 11 can be devoted to the forest with a guide and day 12 to the lake, or vice versa depending on conditions. Ask for details about walking times, boat boarding, meals, equipment and included entrance fees. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. During the rainy season, France Diplomatie advises against caving, even with a guide: choose a suitable alternative activity.
Day 13 connects Khao Sok to Krabi. The extra days on the coast then let you space out excursions and keep several periods free. A second, distant island would add more connections; choose it only if it is a central goal of the trip. Seven nights in one region already give you time to alternate between beaches, boating and rest.
Transport and accommodation
For Bangkok–Chiang Mai, compare flying with the overnight train by looking at the whole journey. The train can replace a hotel night; you need to book your preferred sleeper class and be comfortable with the pace of rail travel. The official SRT D-Ticket platform lets you check trains for your chosen date. No single timetable works for every season.
If you take the train, revise the distribution of nights before booking rooms. A night spent in a sleeper berth should not remain charged at two hotels. On arrival, also ask when your room will be available and whether you can leave your luggage while you wait.
For Chiang Mai–South, air travel is generally the first option to consider when planning a two-week trip. Compare the airports served, included baggage and connections. A cheaper ticket may route you to an airport that then requires a longer road transfer.
Choose hotels after settling on your gateways. In Bangkok, prioritize convenient access to urban transport; in Chiang Mai, a neighborhood suited to walking and pickups; in Krabi, an address that fits the beach and pier you have chosen. Finally, check the cancellation terms: free days only give you flexibility if your bookings actually allow changes.
Trip budget
The budget depends first on the rooms, domestic transport and number of excursions. Request a quote for your dates rather than applying one uniform daily rate to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands. A room shared by two people cannot be compared directly with a dorm bed or a single-person booking.
Start by adding up the thirteen or twenty nights, then the main journeys and arrival and departure transfers. Add meals, urban transport, entrance fees and activities. Airline baggage, boats to access Railay, hotel pickups and meals excluded from tours deserve separate line items.
Activity listings show pricing information and reviews on their main offer pages. Check the currency and package before comparing: a private tour and a place on a group activity are not priced on the same basis. For four people, ask for the group total; if traveling alone, check for any minimum booking requirements.
Also set aside a personal reserve for an extra night or transfer. The amount will depend on your means and insurance. To reduce expenses, cutting down on base changes and choosing a few self-guided visits preserves more useful time than adding excursions with distant departure points.
Requirements and preparation
The TDAC, Thailand’s digital arrival card, is completed free of charge on the official immigration website within the three days before arrival. Prepare your passport, travel and accommodation details. It applies to entry into the country and does not replace the visa or visa-exemption requirements that apply to your nationality.
For an ordinary French passport, the France Diplomatie page consulted, updated on October 7, 2026, states that a 30-day tourist exemption has applied since September 15, 2026. It also requires the passport to be valid for at least six months upon entry. Review these rules before departure and check the permitted date on your arrival stamp, especially if you extend your itinerary.
Check your medical and repatriation insurance, the activities it covers and the conditions for driving, if applicable. Renting a scooter to reach a beach entails licensing and insurance requirements that you should review before renting. For this itinerary, taxis, transfers and excursions make it possible to get around without routinely relying on a two-wheeler.
Finally, download your bookings and save your accommodation addresses for offline access. For a boat or forest excursion, share the itinerary and the operator’s contact details with someone close to you. Check local alerts before each major journey: a closure notice or weather bulletin takes precedence over the planned itinerary.
FAQ
Is two weeks enough for Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands?
Yes, with fourteen days on the ground and three main bases. The proposed itinerary includes three nights in Bangkok at the start, four in Chiang Mai, five in Krabi and one final night in Bangkok. If your vacation includes intercontinental flights, shorten the itinerary according to the days actually available rather than keeping every visit.
What does a third week add?
It allows for three nights in Khao Sok, one extra night in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, then two more nights in Krabi. You add a forest and lake stop while slowing the pace. With twenty nights in total, this version keeps a final night in Bangkok before the international flight.
Should you choose Krabi or Koh Samui?
Krabi fits the itinerary presented, centered on the cliffs of Railay and the islands near the Andaman coast. Samui involves different connections and a different rainfall pattern. Choose first based on the month of your trip and the activities you are looking for; at the end of the year, Samui is not an automatic weather-based substitute for Krabi.
Can you do the itinerary without domestic flights?
The train makes it possible to travel between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, particularly overnight. Traveling from the North to the South by land takes more time and requires different planning. On a two-week trip, reduce the number of regions if you want to avoid flying; three weeks give you more flexibility, provided you include each connection in the schedule.
Where should you stay to visit the islands around Krabi?
Ao Nang works as a mainland base with excursion departures; Railay is better for a stay at the foot of the cliffs, with access by boat. Check the meeting point for each activity before booking your hotel. An address that looks close on a map may require an extra boat or transfer, especially with luggage.
Are the recommended activities available in French?
The listings checked state that the private Bangkok tour and Chiang Mai cooking class are in English. The Krabi cruise offers English, Spanish and Thai. French is not listed for these three products; if French is essential, look for an option that explicitly mentions it before making a purchase.
Is the TDAC paid, and does it replace a visa?
The official TDAC is free and must be completed within the three days before arrival. It records the information needed for border crossing. Entry, exemption and visa requirements remain separate and depend, in particular, on your nationality and length of stay. Go directly to the Thai immigration website to complete the process.
