Frankfurt Terminal 3 is operational, south of the airport. If you are catching a flight there or connecting, the key factor is the journey from the stations and Terminal 1. SkyLine, night shuttle, baggage and security checks: here is how to plan your passage through T3.
Your flight terminal
At Frankfurt, the opening of T3 first changes the way travelers navigate the airport. The airport’s official page says that airlines previously based at Terminal 2 have now moved to Terminal 3. An old travel confirmation or a memory of a previous visit could therefore send you to the wrong side of the airport. Check the terminal assigned to your flight number, then the check-in area and gate once assigned.
T3 comprises gates G, H and J. Fraport’s information identifies H as a Schengen pier, J as a non-Schengen pier and G as a complex that can handle both types of traffic. These letters help you read the signs; the route to follow then depends on your flight and the day’s directions. Keep your gate number handy rather than memorizing only the airline’s name.
The official inauguration had been announced for April 22, 2026. When planning a trip today, the useful information is that it is operational, as confirmed by the airport, and the current allocation of flights. The terminal was designed to accommodate up to 19 million passengers a year in its initial configuration. This figure describes infrastructure capacity, not the number of travelers you will find waiting at your check-in counter.
Stations and the SkyLine
Arriving by train requires an extra step to reach T3. The regional and long-distance stations serve the airport; the connection to Terminal 3 continues on the free SkyLine. When searching for rail services, distinguish the long-distance station, generally called “Fernbahnhof,” from the regional station, “Regionalbahnhof.” Your arrival platform determines your first route through the airport.
After getting off the train, follow the signs for Terminal 3 and the SkyLine. The airport says the service runs from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a train every two to three minutes. Fraport gives eight minutes for the link between Terminals 1 and 3. You must add the walk from your platform, access to the station, any wait and the walk to check-in or your gate. The eight minutes therefore do not represent a complete connection between a train and a plane.
To choose your train, start with the time the airline requires you to be at the airport, then add the steps specific to T3. If you have a bag to check, are traveling with family or have reduced mobility, changes in level and distances take more time. A late rail arrival leaves little opportunity to make up that time. A train ticket ending at the airport does not automatically include protection if you miss your flight: the terms of your booking remain decisive.
On your return, the process is reversed. After landing, you may need to clear border control, collect baggage, exit the hall and travel to the stations. If you have a train reservation, consider the plane’s arrival time as the start of this sequence. The necessary buffer varies depending on where you are arriving from and your baggage; the same landing time can result in two very different airport exits.
Night connections
The SkyLine is not advertised as a continuous service. The airport’s orientation page provides for a road shuttle between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., with stops in front of the Terminal 1 and 3 buildings, on the arrivals plazas. The train and bus operating hours partially overlap: choose the service actually shown for the time of your journey.
For a very early departure, also plan the route to the stop. Getting off a train, going up to arrivals, waiting for a bus and then reaching check-in is a different journey from simply changing platforms. The page consulted does not provide a stated shuttle frequency; do not apply SkyLine’s frequency of two to three minutes to it.
If you arrive by car with someone accompanying you, give Terminal 3 directly as the destination. For accommodation near the airport, check which terminal the hotel shuttle actually serves and its first departure. An address containing “Frankfurt Airport” is not enough to determine how long it will take to reach your airline’s counter.
Road access and transfers
Terminal 3 has road access connected to the A5. The airport advises following the “Terminal 3” signs. A drop-off area is located in front of the building, and the associated parking facility offers up to 8,500 spaces. If you have not booked in advance, the official page indicates the entrance at P11. Check parking rates and terms for your dates; they cannot be inferred solely from the time spent in front of the terminal.
This direct arrival is particularly convenient for travelers being dropped off with several bags. To meet someone, agree on the terminal, level and an identifiable meeting point after they exit. The landing time does not let you predict precisely when they will be outside. A message sent after they collect their bags makes for a more reliable meeting than planning to wait based only on the flight schedule.
The T3 bus station is on the arrivals level. The terminal page refers travelers to the RMV network for schedules, with routes including connections to Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Walldorf and Groß-Gerau. Search for the relevant day and your departure stop. Depending on where you are staying, a direct bus may avoid going through the airport stations.
For travel to a hotel in central Frankfurt after a flight, we also feature a private sedan transfer offered by RHOMTRIP on Viator. The service accepts up to three travelers and provides for pickup in the arrivals hall once baggage has been collected. The driver is described as English-speaking. The listing allows one suitcase and one carry-on per person, as well as a 60-minute wait after landing; confirm the arrangements if formalities may delay your exit.
This option suits an arrival with a specific address and baggage, particularly if you want to avoid transfers on the way to the hotel. Provide your flight number, local arrival date and Terminal 3, then confirm the meeting point with the operator. Driving time depends on traffic. If you are traveling with a child, oversized baggage or accessibility needs, get confirmation that the service can accommodate you before booking.

BookConnections between terminals
After your first flight, check the screens to find the gate for your next one. The airport also displays walking times once your gate has been assigned, including routes behind security and passport control. These indications are more useful on site than a general duration found before departure. A gate change can alter your route, even within a single terminal.
Your situation depends mainly on your baggage and booking. The airport says that checked baggage is generally sent through to the final destination. Still, check the baggage tag and the information you received at check-in. When you need to collect your bags, particularly for separately booked flights, you must go through baggage claim and then hand them over to the next airline. The route then includes public-area steps and a new check-in.
To get from one terminal to another, use the connection indicated by the airport, but your full route may also include border control or another security screening. A journey within the Schengen Area and an arrival from a non-Schengen country require different preparation. The formalities also depend on your documents and right of entry if your route requires you to leave the transit area.
We recommend checking these points before buying two separate tickets: collecting your bags, the second flight’s baggage drop-off deadline, required documents, and what to do if the first flight is delayed. The time available should be measured up to the closure of boarding or check-in, as applicable, rather than the takeoff time. No single minimum connection time covers every situation.
If your first flight arrives late, go to a service desk or speak to the airline staff with your next boarding pass. They can direct you based on the gate and checkpoints that are actually open. By watching for “Transfer” signs and checking your destination, you can also avoid automatically following the flow of travelers whose journey ends in Frankfurt.
Check-in and security
When departing from T3, online check-in can reduce the steps you need to take, but a checked suitcase still has to be handed over in person. The process described by the airport has two steps: print the baggage tag at a kiosk, then drop off your suitcase at Fast Bag Drop. Remove any old tags and keep your documents and boarding pass with you.
Oversized baggage, excess baggage, and special requests are handled by counter staff. The arrangements available for your trip depend on the airline and your booking. For assistance, an animal, or sports equipment, check the relevant requirements before arriving at the terminal so you can choose the right queue from the outset.
The official T3 page says its security checkpoints are equipped with CT scanners. It allows liquids of up to two litres in cabin baggage and says they do not need to be placed in a resealable transparent bag. Laptops, tablets, and cameras can remain in your bag during screening. Follow the staff’s instructions and the official rules displayed when you pass through.
This information applies to checks at Frankfurt Terminal 3. If your trip includes another connection or a return from a different airport, check the rules for each additional screening. Carrying a container accepted at T3 does not automatically settle the question for your entire itinerary, particularly when you have to pass through security again elsewhere.
Architecture while you wait
You can also discover the terminal through its interior layout. After completing the formalities, the marketplace designed by LAVA covers approximately 6,000 square metres. The firm describes a collection of islands dedicated to rest, dining, and information, with passenger flow planned using movement simulations. These spaces give you reference points for settling in without staying in the path of through-traffic.
The ceiling is the most distinctive detail of this design. Aluminium tubes create a rippling surface and shapes that frame the entry of natural light. LAVA says the design was developed using digital modelling; its work covers the marketplace. While you wait, the ceiling’s forms and the rest areas offer a more detailed sense of the place than simply walking through the shops.
However, the airport says the shops and restaurants listed for T3 are in the area beyond security and require a valid boarding pass. If you are meeting someone, arrange to meet in the public area. If you are connecting, first find your gate and identify any remaining formalities before sitting down for a meal: your useful waiting time begins once you have identified those steps.
FAQ
How do I get to Terminal 3 from an airport train station?
After leaving your platform, follow the signs to the SkyLine and Terminal 3. The inter-terminal connection is free and, according to the airport, runs from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a train every two to three minutes. Add the walk from the station and the walk to your check-in area to the time spent on the train.
How long does it take to get between Terminals 1 and 3?
Fraport says the SkyLine connection takes eight minutes. Your door-to-door journey takes longer: getting to the station, waiting, and walking all add time. For an air connection, you also need to account for any security checks and baggage arrangements. Eight minutes is not enough to determine how much time to allow between flights.
How do I change terminals at night?
A road shuttle is listed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., outside the arrival halls of Terminals 1 and 3. Check the signs on site for the stop and the next departure. Allow time to get to the arrivals level; the SkyLine’s daytime frequency does not apply to this bus.
Do I have to collect my baggage when connecting?
That depends on how your baggage is checked and on your tickets. It is generally sent through to the final destination when the travel arrangements provide for this. If you need to collect it, the airport says to check it in again with the next airline; it also mentions this process for separately booked connections. Confirm the destination on the baggage tag at your first departure.
Are liquids over 100 ml allowed at T3?
The terminal’s official page says liquids of up to two litres are allowed at T3 checkpoints equipped with CT scanners. It also allows electronic devices to remain in your bag. Check the latest instructions before travelling and the rules at any other airports where you will pass through security, including on your return.
Can you visit the marketplace without flying?
The airport says the retail and dining areas are beyond security and require a valid boarding pass. They are therefore not a freely accessible public meeting place for someone accompanying you. Agree on a meeting place in the public hall before going through security.
Is a private transfer suitable for getting to another flight?
The selected service takes you from FRA airport to a hotel in central Frankfurt. It is intended for arrivals into the city, with pickup after baggage claim. Up to three passengers; English-speaking driver. Confirm the meeting point at Terminal 3.
