Easter falls on March 28 in 2027. For three nights in Europe, Bruges, Amsterdam, Florence and Porto offer four very different trips: chocolate and canals, Dutch painting, the Renaissance or walks along the Douro. Here’s how to choose your base, plan your days and book the activities that matter, without renting a car or filling every hour.

Easter 2027 dates

Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027, followed by Easter Monday on March 29. So departing on Friday, March 26, and returning on Monday, March 29, makes for a three-night stay. In France, as a general rule, Good Friday is not a national public holiday: you’ll need to have that day off to leave early. Service Public lists it among the public holidays in the relevant municipalities of Alsace-Moselle. Also check your company’s rules for Monday, as whether it is a non-working day depends on the applicable provisions.

This early date changes how you choose your trip. Images of a garden in mid-April or a terrace in May don’t necessarily reflect a weekend in late March. Here, we focus on four cities where a museum, workshop or monument can fill part of the day, while walks remain easy to adapt. That way, the itinerary still works if rain, wind or a chilly morning change your plans.

The four options are separate trips, each with a single base. Bruges is particularly well suited to a rail getaway from northern France or via Brussels. Amsterdam lets you combine a major painting collection with exploring the canals. Florence puts museums and Renaissance spaces first. Porto brings together riverside quays, viewpoints and indoor visits in a city with pronounced hills.

The itineraries below are suggested pacing, not a package for sale or an official Easter program. Check transport schedules and activity departures for your booked dates. An experience listing that is active today does not prove that departures are already on sale for the last weekend of March 2027.

Choosing based on your journey

Before comparing hotels, check what time you’ll be able to drop off your bags and when you’ll need to leave. Arriving on Friday evening and leaving on Monday morning gives you two full days. A trip that lets you arrive early Friday afternoon and leave late Monday gives you more room for an additional visit. This difference can matter more than the number of nights shown.

Bruges has the advantage if your rail itinerary is straightforward. The tourist office identifies Brussels-Midi as an international gateway, with a connection to Brugge station. The station is within walking distance of the historic center. For two people or a family, not having to transfer from the airport can make arrival more relaxing. Still, compare the journey from your home: Bruges will not automatically be the fastest destination for every French reader.

For Amsterdam, the itinerary works best when split between the center and just one major visit. You can devote the second day to the Keukenhof gardens, but that excursion then replaces part of your time in the city. For Florence, the main thing is to schedule your chosen museum at the right time. Porto calls for a different consideration: distances on the map give an incomplete idea of the effort involved, because routes between the upper city and the river include hills.

If you’re going only from Saturday to Monday, we recommend the most compact itinerary: Bruges focused on the center and a workshop, or just one major visit in Amsterdam. With three nights and two full days, all four cities are still possible. To choose between two destinations, compare the time available at your destination, the full cost of getting there, and the visit you’d regret missing. You’ll reach a more personal decision than by looking for one universally best city.

Bruges, canals and chocolate

Bruges lends itself to a stay in which the main landmarks can be explored on foot: the Markt and the belfry, the streets of the historic center, the bridges and the quays. The value of three nights lies in being able to return to the same area at different times, rather than in ticking off a long list of monuments. A first stroll around the Markt is enough to get your bearings; the canals then offer another route through the city.

For Friday, our suggestion is a relaxed one: check in, explore the central squares and have dinner near your accommodation. Saturday can combine a walk along the water with a chocolate workshop. Sunday leaves room for a museum or another part of the center, depending on opening hours, with a long break in the middle of the day. On Monday, a short outing before the train avoids turning departure into a race between several timed tickets.

It’s worth checking the station when you buy your ticket. The tourist office distinguishes Brugge, which is convenient for visiting the center, from Brugge Sint-Pieters, in a different area. After arriving, walk to your accommodation if your luggage and the distance allow, or take a local connection. An address close to the places you want to explore also makes it easier to return and drop off purchases or take a break.

For a group with teenagers, we’ve selected the Belgian chocolate workshop offered through Viator. Participants make pralines and mendiants, work with chocolate and take their creations home. Materials and ingredients are provided. The activity is conducted in English and welcomes participants aged twelve and over; the listing does not allow spectators. Each member of the group must therefore fit the booked format, including anyone who might only want to accompany the others.

This workshop takes up a substantial part of the day. Schedule it between two walks rather than after a series of indoor visits. It gives the theme of chocolate at Easter a hands-on dimension: you learn to make chocolate pieces instead of limiting your stay to shopping in boutiques. The listing provides adaptations for dietary requirements, while the hot chocolate contains milk. If anyone has an allergy, speak directly with the organizer about the ingredients and cross-contamination.

Bruges is therefore a good fit for travelers who want an easy-to-explore center and an activity to share. With young children, replace the selected workshop with a program suited to their age. The appeal of the trip doesn’t depend on this booking: the walks, breaks and discovery of the façades already make up an important part of these three nights.

Amsterdam, painting and canals

In Amsterdam, the narrow façades, bridges and canals naturally make up the first stroll. For this weekend, we suggest pairing them with the Rijksmuseum. The museum brings together works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and other Dutch artists in a collection that adds historical depth to the urban landscapes you’ll see outside. This pairing works well for a short stay: a morning of art, followed by the streets and water in the afternoon.

The Rijksmuseum says it opens daily, including public holidays, and requires visitors to book an entry time slot. You can buy a ticket from the museum and visit independently. The guided visit we’ve selected includes admission and is conducted in English, in a group of no more than eight people. It’s a good fit if you’d like an introductory tour before continuing on your own. Follow the provider’s meeting instructions rather than arriving at the ticket desk without a booking.

Our suggested itinerary starts on Friday with the canals near your accommodation. Saturday morning is for the Rijksmuseum, followed by lunch and a flexible afternoon. Sunday can be set aside for a cruise or a day at Keukenhof, depending on your priorities. Monday remains free for a final stroll and the journey home. Avoid scheduling the museum, a long flower excursion and a second major attraction all on the same day: travel and queues would take time away from the visits.

For a group traveling together, a private cruise with a captain is another option. The listing includes indoor and outdoor seating, drinks and snacks; commentary is available in English or Dutch. Its appeal lies in being able to see the canals while seated and share the boat with your group. Compare the total booking price with that of a group option for the same number of participants, checking what each includes.

Plan the boat booking around the exact boarding point. A quay may look close as the crow flies but require a detour across the bridges. Also check the boarding arrangements if someone in your group needs assistance. The listing mentions accessibility features, but speaking with the operator will help clarify boarding, stroller storage or wheelchair requirements. Staying in a central location doesn’t remove the need to check this final leg.

Amsterdam is our pick for travelers who want to alternate a major museum with city walks, with the option of a seated activity. First book the visit that motivates your trip, then choose accommodation with convenient connections. A less central hotel can work if it’s easy to reach; a slightly lower price is less appealing when it means long round trips every time you want a break.

Keukenhof in late March

Keukenhof has confirmed its 2027 season from March 18 to May 9, with opening on Sundays and public holidays. The Easter weekend therefore falls within the announced opening period. This makes it possible to plan a day around the park without reusing the 2026 dates. The operator currently lists opening hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; check its visitor and transport arrangements before choosing your time slot.

The fact that Easter falls within the opening calendar does not make it possible to predict the condition of every flowerbed. Blooming depends in particular on the varieties and the conditions during the season. In late March, plan the visit as a discovery of the garden at the start of its opening period, without automatically expecting the same scenes as in a photograph taken several weeks later. The park’s opening and peak bloom are two different things.

From Amsterdam, we recommend setting aside a day for this outing: the outbound journey, the visit, a meal or break, and then the return. The exact duration will depend on the transport option you choose. Check whether the ticket covers admission only or includes transport, and where that transport departs from. The Rijksmuseum guided tour and the canal cruise featured in this guide are other activities; neither includes a Keukenhof ticket.

With two full days, you can visit the museum on Saturday and the garden on Sunday, leaving the canals for arrival and departure strolls. If you prefer a fully urban stay, keep the museum and the boat trip. This gives each experience enough time without making the whole weekend depend on an assumption about the tulips.

Florence around the Uffizi

Florence is a good place to spend three nights in a relatively compact sightseeing area around the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi, and the Arno. For this stay, we prioritize painting. The Uffizi feature works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael, among others, in the building designed by Vasari. The squares and riverbanks then extend the visit, offering a change of scale between galleries, façades, and views of the river.

Monday is the key factor in the schedule. The Uffizi list Monday as their usual closing day. Exceptional openings do occur, but you should rely on one only if there is an announcement for the relevant edition. For Easter 2027, our itinerary therefore schedules the gallery for Saturday, March 27, and leaves Monday, March 29, for a stroll or departure. This arrangement remains useful even if a special program is announced later.

The selected private tour includes timed entry and offers a French-speaking guide. It suits a couple, family, or small group looking for explanations in French and a guided route through the collections. The provider requests travelers’ full names; identity documents must match the booking. Hotel transfers are not included. Check the agency’s meeting point and the required arrival time before heading to the museum.

For Friday, plan a first look at the historic center and the area around the Duomo without trying to visit too many places indoors. Saturday morning can be devoted to the Uffizi, followed by the riverbanks and a break in the afternoon. Sunday offers a more flexible day among the squares, the streets on the other side of the river, and the monuments that are actually open to visitors. Religious services can affect tourist access to churches: check the conditions for each site and dress appropriately.

A museum ticket and a monument visit cover only the specific services they describe. They do not provide access to a reserved viewing spot for an Easter celebration. We are not basing this stay on an assumed 2027 time for the Scoppio del Carro. If this tradition is a reason for your trip, wait for the relevant official program before scheduling a museum appointment nearby. You can then adjust your days around the main squares accordingly.

Florence is especially well suited to visitors who want to spend time in one major museum and then walk between places. For three nights, focus on the city rather than adding a distant excursion into Tuscany. You can explore the gallery in greater depth, return to a square you enjoyed, and keep an evening free of transport arrangements. Choose accommodation based on the actual route from the station or your arrival stop, your luggage, and your tolerance for noise.

Porto between the upper city and the Douro

In Porto, the itinerary takes shape around two levels: the streets and monuments of the upper city, followed by the Douro riverfront and views toward the Luís I Bridge. Walking gives the stay a pleasant sense of continuity, but the slopes require more attention than a simple distance calculation suggests. For the first few hours, choose a limited area around your accommodation. You can save the long descent to the river for a day when you have time and good walking shoes.

The selected guided walk introduces the main landmarks of the city center with an English-speaking guide. The advertised departure point is near Clérigos Tower, and the walk ends near the Douro. The service covers the walking tour and an introduction to the sights; indoor visits to monuments must be booked separately. It works well for the first full day, helping you decide which places you would like to revisit.

Saturday can therefore combine the guided walk with a break by the river. Sunday leaves room for an indoor visit and another bank, at your own pace. We suggest the Palácio da Bolsa for its architecture: the skylight in the Pátio das Nações, the staircases, and the decoration of the Arab Room introduce another facet of Porto’s history. The operator requires a guided tour and offers French, among other languages, with language arrangements based on order of arrival. Check the session before assigning it a specific time.

Monday can be kept for a short stroll and the return journey. For airport access, the metro network shows a connection between Aeroporto and Trindade. Check the route for your address, any transfers, and the day’s service. Works or network changes may affect the final leg. On a short stay, accommodation with good connections for your arrival helps you avoid spending the first evening figuring out several consecutive journeys.

Porto is well suited to a food-focused weekend, without needing to book an experience for every meal. Choose a few restaurants based on the neighborhood you’ll be in that day, and leave yourself some flexibility for lunch. If a cellar visit or tasting is a reason for the trip, schedule it instead of another visit, taking its age and transport requirements into account. A full day in the Douro Valley would significantly reduce the time available for Porto; we would reserve it for a longer stay or a clearly stated priority.

This destination requires particular consideration for people who have difficulty walking. Check the slopes around the hotel, the location of stops, and the options for getting back up after visiting the riverfront. Accommodation with a view of the river may be less convenient to reach than a place near a practical transport connection. The itinerary should match the group’s abilities: one indoor visit and a short walk can be enough for a successful day.

The budget for three nights

To compare these four trips, calculate a total for the group before dividing it per person: travel to the destination, three nights, transfers, local transport, meals and activities. Add baggage and ancillary transport fees when applicable. A private boat booking should be assessed at the amount actually quoted for your group; a starting price does not always use the same basis as an individual museum ticket.

We do not rank these cities by hotel price: dates, room sizes, cancellation terms and availability all affect the comparison. Search using the same requirements for every city. A family room, two double rooms and accommodation with several beds meet different needs. Location matters too: note the walking or transit time to your main visit and to the departure point for your return.

For this kind of trip, one major activity booked for each full day leaves a reasonable margin. In Bruges, the workshop can be the main cultural expense on Saturday. In Florence, the Uffizi visit takes priority for booking. Amsterdam can pair the museum with another day for a garden or a boat trip. In Porto, the guided walk can be followed by one indoor admission chosen to suit your interests.

The prices, currencies, ratings and number of reviews for affiliate experiences appear in the cards when available and up to date. Check the exact inclusions when booking, especially for a private service. Accommodation cancellation terms should be consistent with those for transport: a flexible hotel offers little protection if everything else in the trip is paid for and cannot be changed.

Bookings to make before departure

Start by securing your access and the visit that motivates the trip. For the Rijksmuseum, the entry time is part of the museum’s arrangements. For the Uffizi with a private guide, the coordination between the named ticket, language and meeting point calls for a careful review of the confirmation. In Bruges, the workshop’s age requirements and language must suit all participants. In Porto, check that the pace of a guided walk works for your group.

Plan meals and other outings around these commitments. A booking shortly after a train or plane arrives leaves little room for delays. We recommend keeping Friday for settling in and free-time walks, then scheduling the important activities on the full days. On your return day, choose an outing that can be shortened without losing a paid service.

In the days before departure, review the operators’ information, the documents to bring and the weather forecast. Save the meeting point offline, along with the contact details on your confirmations. For churches and venues hosting celebrations, check weekend tourist access. You will then have a schedule precise enough to book and flexible enough to genuinely enjoy all three nights.

FAQ

When is Easter weekend in 2027?

Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027, and Easter Monday on March 29. A stay from Friday the 26th to Monday the 29th means three nights. If you work on Friday, you can leave after your workday or choose a Saturday departure; in that case, adjust the itinerary to no more than two full days.

Is Friday, March 26 a public holiday in France?

Good Friday is not a public holiday under the general rules in France. Service Public lists it as a public holiday in the relevant municipalities of Alsace-Moselle, subject to the applicable conditions. Check your situation with your employer before booking an early departure. Easter Monday is a legal holiday, but the applicable work rules still need to be checked.

Which destination should I choose for a train trip?

Bruges is worth comparing first if you are leaving from northern France or can easily reach Brussels-Midi. The tourist office describes the connection to Brugge, whose station is within walking distance of the city center. Amsterdam is also worth considering, depending on your departure city. Compare actual schedules, connections and the full fare for your dates.

Can you visit Keukenhof at Easter 2027?

Yes. The park announces that it will be open from March 18 to May 9, 2027, including Sundays and public holidays. Easter falls within that period. However, the bloom status of different flower beds depends on the season and varieties. Set aside a day for the visit from Amsterdam, and check admission, transport and their terms separately.

Where can you go for warm weather at Easter?

None of these four cities is presented as a guarantee of warm weather or swimming at the end of March. Porto and Florence may appeal to those who want to walk in a different setting, but check the weather for your trip shortly before departure. Above all, choose a destination whose museums, monuments and activities you will enjoy in cool weather too.

Are three nights enough for Florence or Porto?

Yes, for a first visit focused on the city, with two full days and walks on arrival or departure. In Florence, choose one major museum and nearby neighborhoods. In Porto, spread your time between the upper city, the riverfront and an indoor visit. Count a distant excursion as a priority in its own right, since it replaces some of your time in the city.

Is the Uffizi open on Easter Monday?

Its usual schedule lists Monday as a closure day. Any exceptional opening needs to be confirmed for the specific date. The itinerary proposed here therefore schedules the visit for Saturday, March 27, 2027. You can keep that choice or adapt it if an official announcement is made later, without having based the whole trip on an assumed opening.

Is the chocolate workshop suitable for young children?

The selected activity in Bruges accepts participants aged twelve and over and is conducted in English. Spectators are not accepted. For a family with younger children, choose another activity explicitly suited to their age. Tell the organizer about any allergies before booking and ask for details about the ingredients and preparation conditions.

Do you need to rent a car for these trips?

The proposed itineraries are based in one location and rely on walking or public transport, with no car rental. Choosing accommodation and planning the last legs of your journey still matter, particularly with luggage or reduced mobility. In Porto, take note of the hills; in Amsterdam, the boarding quay; in Bruges, the correct station; and in Florence, the route to the guide’s meeting point.
