Padua for its frescoes, Graz for its architecture, Girona for its medieval quarters, Trieste for its cafés overlooking the Adriatic, and Braga for the heritage of Minho: five bases where you can spend two or three nights exploring the city itself. Here’s how to choose your getaway and plan your visits without filling every day with travel.
Choosing a different base
In Padua, Giotto’s frescoes require a reserved time slot, while the market squares invite you to linger through the morning. In Trieste, the seafront and cafés give breaks a different character. Choosing a European destination beyond the usual stops is above all a way to build an itinerary that suits you: a neighborhood, a landmark, a meal, then a walk that doesn’t depend on a coach departure.
Our selection focuses on five cities where you can plan a short cultural stay around walking. It is not based on a statistical ranking of visitor numbers. None of these places guarantees empty streets; famous landmarks, festivals and holiday periods draw crowds here too. Choosing your dates and staying overnight matter just as much as the destination itself.
For painted art and markets, choose Padua. For a mix of historic architecture, contemporary creativity and viewpoints, choose Graz. Girona is ideal for those who enjoy wandering narrow streets and reading history in the city walls. Trieste brings together seaside walks and café culture. Braga puts churches, gardens and northern Portuguese cuisine center stage. The five suggested visits complement these stays; each is an option to choose according to how you like to discover a city.
Padua, frescoes and markets
Padua is worth a stay for its own collections and squares, beyond a day trip from Venice. Its strongest thread is 14th-century painting: the Scrovegni Chapel and seven other sites make up the Padova Urbs Picta ensemble, inscribed on the World Heritage List. This concentration makes it possible to plan several visits around a shared theme, then return to the life of the streets between indoor visits.
At the Scrovegni Chapel, Giotto painted the stories of Anne and Joachim, Mary and Jesus, the allegories of the Vices and Virtues, and the Last Judgment. The management authority lists a fifteen-minute visit inside the chapel, with an air-conditioned waiting facility designed to preserve its microclimate. Reserve this visit first, then plan the rest around it. Ticket collection and entry instructions require some extra time: follow the directions in your confirmation and avoid timing your train arrival to coincide with the start of your slot.
The squares district offers a practical counterpoint to this tightly timed visit. Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza della Frutta and the Sottosalone covered market give you a destination for a morning walk and shopping. Then allow time for a coffee at Pedrocchi or a stroll through the city center, rather than immediately adding a second museum. Prato della Valle and the Basilica of Saint Anthony make it easy to plan another part of your stay at a more leisurely pace.
We recommend two nights for a first visit, or three if the frescoes are your priority. This leaves half a day free to revisit a neighborhood or add another Urbs Picta site. Check opening hours separately: a ticket covering several sites does not exempt you from checking each one’s own conditions.
To get your bearings, the selected guided walk lasts two hours, is in English and is limited to a group of ten people. It starts at Prato della Valle and connects the central squares, among other places, passing by the landmarks. The Scrovegni Chapel is included as an exterior stop; admission must be booked separately. This tour is a good fit early in your stay, before you devote time to the interiors that interest you.

View activityGraz, architecture and panoramas
In Graz, you can compare different eras on foot: the courtyards of the Landhaus, the façades of the city centre, the contemporary form of the Kunsthaus and the structure of the Murinsel make for very different stops. The old town has been a World Heritage Site since 1999; Eggenberg Palace joined it in 2010. On a short stay, this variety makes it possible to change up your visits without moving to a different base each day.
The Schlossberg offers a first overview of the city’s layout. The clock tower rises above the rooftops; the tourist office lists a funicular and a lift for reaching the heights. Choose your way up according to your mobility and the time available, then set aside some time for the paths and views. A visit to Graz is better for giving this hill a proper place in the itinerary rather than treating it as a photo stop between appointments.
Down below, crossing from one bank of the Mur to the other connects heritage with recent architecture. The Kunsthaus offers a chance to explore contemporary art; its silhouette can also be admired from outside. The Murinsel adds a stop above the water. Back in the centre, the Landhaus courtyard and the cathedral district change the feel of the walk. Choose a museum based on your interests: trying to see every collection would leave less time for the neighbourhoods.
Two nights make it possible to divide your stay between the centre, the Schlossberg and one indoor visit. With a third night, you can give Eggenberg its own slot, after checking which areas are actually open on your dates. For meals, the tourist office highlights regional produce and farmers’ markets; check their opening days before building a morning around them.
The selected walk with a local lasts sixty to ninety minutes, in English or German, with a maximum of eight travellers. The route is adapted to the group’s interests and helps you get your bearings in the city; museum tickets and transport are not included. We recommend it for an initial orientation and local recommendations, followed by a longer, independent visit to the place that caught your interest.

View activityGirona, from its bridges to its city walls
The houses along the Onyar provide a first landmark in Girona: the bridges let you cross from one bank to the other and view the façades from different angles. The old town then rises uphill. The Força Vella, dating back to the Roman foundation, and the medieval extensions explain part of its layout. The city council distinguishes these areas and lists the monuments that help trace their transformation.
The Call, the former Jewish quarter, deserves time for its lanes and passageways. Above it, the cathedral and city walls offer different perspectives. The Sant Pere de Galligants area, followed by the Sant Daniel valley, lets you extend your visit beyond the most photographed bridges. Choose according to your energy: a short route on the map can involve steps and several uphill stretches.
Staying overnight in Girona lets you spread these areas across two days instead of trying to fit them into a few hours on a day trip. Spend the first walk around the Onyar, the Call and the area around the cathedral. The next day, head back up to the higher ground and add an interior visit or the Sant Daniel area. This is an editorial suggestion for dividing up your time, to be adjusted to monument opening hours and your pace; it leaves room for meals and breaks without requiring one admission after another.
To avoid crossing paths with groups, alternate between areas: a bridge can wait while you explore a nearby street. The presence of other visitors is no reason to systematically seek out quieter residential passageways. Be mindful of access, neighbourhood customs and the space residents need on stairways and in narrow streets.
The “History and Legends” tour starts right in Girona, at Plaça Sant Feliu. It lasts two and a half hours, in English or Spanish, with a maximum of fifteen participants, and covers the neighbourhoods, city walls, houses and bridges, among other sights. Monuments are viewed from the outside. The route is suitable for people who can walk comfortably on slopes; at least two participants are required to book. Plan any indoor visits separately.

View activityTrieste, cafés and the Adriatic
In Trieste, Piazza Unità d’Italia opens the city onto the sea. The monumental façades, Molo Audace and Canal Grande provide a simple framework for a first walk. The regional tourism office describes the city’s Habsburg heritage and cultural diversity through its architecture, religious sites and cafés. The cityscape thus lets you pair a stay in Italy with a history shaped by Central Europe.
The cafés are a destination in their own right. James Joyce, Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba are among the writers the tourist office associates with these places. Choose an establishment for its atmosphere and take time to enjoy a break, rather than visiting several addresses just to tick them off. Local coffee terminology adds a practical detail: an espresso is often ordered as a “nero”. Check the menu for the preparation you actually want to drink.
For a two-night stay, we would divide the time between the seaside centre and a separate trip to Miramare. The castle is outside the central area: check how to get there, which areas are open to visitors and the transport options for the day before adding it to your plans. A walk along Canal Grande and one along the seafront can take place at different times, with a café or museum in between. This arrangement is still enjoyable if you prefer not to walk for long stretches at a time.
The season mainly affects how much time you spend outdoors. In autumn and winter, keep indoor activities in your itinerary and check the weather before planning a long walk along the seafront. There is no need to fill an exposed afternoon if a café or collection appeals to you more.
For travellers who enjoy exploring through puzzles, the selected Explorial route is done independently on a smartphone and takes about two hours. The listed stops include Canal Grande, Piazza della Borsa and Piazza Unità. French is available; you will need a mobile data connection and a charged phone. You choose when to start and when to take breaks, solving puzzles outdoors along the way. No guide joins you, and monument admissions are separate.

View activityBraga, gardens and religious heritage
Braga offers a base for discovering the monuments and flavors of the Minho. In the center, the Sé, Santa Bárbara Garden and Arco da Porta Nova provide three easy landmarks to combine on a walk. The tourist office describes the cathedral as the oldest in Portugal. To plan your stay, distinguish this urban center from the sanctuaries that require an additional trip.
Bom Jesus do Monte holds a special place in this religious heritage; Visit Braga notes its inscription on the World Heritage List in 2019. We would set aside a separate half-day for it, including travel and breaks, after checking access conditions. This buffer avoids interrupting your exploration of the center for a rushed round trip. Opening hours for places of worship and services should also guide your choice of interior visits.
Minho cuisine is a good reason to reserve proper mealtimes. The tourism website highlights bacalhau à Braga, also known as à Narcisa, and pudim Abade de Priscos. Check the menu and ask about ingredients if you have dietary restrictions; the name of a specialty alone does not tell you everything it contains. Planning lunch in the center lets you link your visits without having to search for a place to eat while on the move.
Two nights work well for a first visit: the center and gardens on one day, Bom Jesus on another, with time to revisit the streets that interest you. If you have a third day, explore one monument in greater depth rather than automatically adding another city. Check the religious calendar carefully: a celebration can become the main reason for your stay and significantly change the atmosphere you are looking for.
The Explorial game route stays in the center, around Praça da República, Santa Bárbara, the Arco and the cathedral. Allow about two hours at your own pace, with French available in the app. You will need a charged phone and mobile data. The puzzles focus on public spaces; arrange monument admissions and the trip to Bom Jesus separately. This option suits a couple or a group of friends who want to explore the city together while deciding when to take breaks.

For these five city breaks, spring and fall are our first choices if you want to spend plenty of time walking. This advice does not replace checking local conditions: a festival, pilgrimage or holiday weekend can change visitor numbers and prices. For November or winter, focus on opening hours, daylight and available indoor activities. The five cities are in the Northern Hemisphere, but their seasonal conditions still vary.
Before fixing your dates, choose your priority visit and check that it will be open. Then book transport and accommodation around a realistic itinerary. At the Scrovegni Chapel, the admission time shapes the day; elsewhere, a guided tour can simply serve as a starting point. Staying near the walks you have planned can avoid repeated journeys, but check the actual route from the station or arrival stop, especially with luggage.
Compare the total cost: transport to your destination, accommodation, local travel, meals and admissions. A city that is less prominent on tourist itineraries is not necessarily cheaper to visit. A good-value transport ticket may lose its appeal if it means arriving late, making an extra transfer and paying for a night you barely use. Activity prices and ratings appear on the offer cards; check the option, language and terms before booking.
The two-night pace
Two nights give you one full day, with arrival and departure on either side. On the first day, keep fixed commitments to a minimum: settling in, taking an orientation walk and having a meal are often enough. The second day is for the main monument, followed by a nearby neighborhood. On the last day, fit in a short visit or another walk, leaving enough time to collect your luggage and reach your transport.
With three nights, add an in-depth visit or a separate outing, such as Eggenberg in Graz or Miramare in Trieste. You can also leave part of that extra day free. If your stay is focused on walking, check the accessibility of each route: Girona’s steps and Graz’s hills call for different trade-offs. Places of worship and tour operators can provide details about suitable access beyond a general description such as “city center.”
Choosing a single base also gives you more flexibility to reschedule a walk based on the weather or how you feel. You can book a guide for the explanations that interest you, then explore the rest of the city on your own. The five offers in this guide correspond to five alternative destinations; they are not an itinerary to follow in sequence during one short trip.
FAQ
Which city should I choose for a first three-day trip?
Choose Padua if you want to build your trip around frescoes and markets. Graz offers a stronger mix of historic architecture, contemporary culture and views. Girona is all about lanes and city walls, Trieste about cafés and coastal scenery, and Braga about religious monuments and Minho cuisine. Start by choosing a main experience, then compare travel options from your starting point: travel time may tip the balance between two equally appealing destinations.
Can you really avoid the crowds in these cities?
There is no guarantee that you will avoid crowds. Our selection is not based on comparative visitor numbers. You can spread your visits over several days, check the local calendar and leave some flexibility around the most popular sights. Staying overnight also lets you experience the city at times that differ from those of day-trippers, without promising that it will always be quiet.
Do I need to rent a car?
You do not need a car for the central walks described in this guide. However, check how to get there from your station or airport, as well as connections to places outside the center. Bom Jesus in Braga, Miramare in Trieste and Eggenberg in Graz each require separate planning. Your choice also depends on your mobility and the route to your accommodation; a walkable center may still have hills or steps.
Which visits should I book first?
In Padua, start with the Scrovegni Chapel if it is the main reason for your stay: admission is at a specific time slot, and the interior visit lasts fifteen minutes. In each city, then check the arrangements for any museum or monument you absolutely want to see. Book a guided walk based on the language and time that fit your itinerary, leaving some leeway after you arrive.
Are the activities offered available in French?
The Trieste and Braga game routes list French as an in-app language. The Padua walk is offered in English, the Graz walk in English or German, and the Girona walk in English or Spanish. Select the language for your option when booking. Explorial routes are self-guided: you read the texts and solve the puzzles on your phone.
Do guided tours include the monuments?
The Padua walk does not include admission to the Scrovegni Chapel. In Graz, museum tickets and transport are separate; in Girona, monuments are presented from the outside. The Trieste and Braga games take place in public spaces and do not include interior access. Book tickets for any collections you want to see in a separate time slot; do not assume admission is included just because a monument is on the itinerary.
When should I go for a quieter walking trip?
After checking the local calendar, spring and fall are our first suggestions for these cultural trips. Also consider opening hours, weather and daylight, especially as winter approaches. A cooler season can be appealing for a walking trip, but a celebration or major event can draw large crowds. Choose your dates based on these concrete factors rather than a destination’s “hidden gem” label.
