Four nights in Medellín, four around Salento and five in Cartagena de Indias: this split leaves time for neighborhoods, coffee farms and the coast, without changing hotels every morning. Here’s how to plan this first trip, choose worthwhile excursions and adapt the coffee-country stop to current alerts and local conditions.
The pace of the three stops
In Medellín, you’ll go from Botero’s sculptures to the sloping streets of Comuna 13. In Quindío, your days revolve around a finca or a trail. In Cartagena, the city walls, squares and outings on the water set a third pace. These stops call for different clothes, different ways of getting around and time between bookings.
Check the current situation before buying the tour. In its notice updated October 29, 2026, France Diplomatie reports military operations in several red zones and maintains guidance concerning regions affected by the August 10 earthquake. The Eje cafetero is among the areas concerned; the center of Pereira is strongly discouraged. For the Salento stop, confirm the status of access routes and your accommodation, then review the safety map before committing. If these checks remain inconclusive, keep Medellín and Cartagena as your two bases and postpone the coffee-country stay.
With that caveat, thirteen nights is our suggested starting point: four in Medellín, four in Salento and five in Cartagena. Use travel days between regions primarily for getting from place to place. The final block leaves some flexibility for international connections; the order can be reversed depending on the tickets actually available. With only ten days, two bases allow for more in-depth visits.
Season and packing
December to March is a first window to consider for combining these three stops. Colombia Travel indicates that this is generally a drier period, with regional variations. For Cartagena, the tourism board gives a broader favorable period from late November through April. Holidays and festivals can nevertheless have a major effect on accommodation choices: compare availability before fixing all your excursions.
In the Andes, altitude matters as much as the month. A shower in Salento calls for a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip; a walk in Cartagena mainly calls for water, a hat and breaks in the shade. According to the national climate overview, April-May and October-November are generally wetter. These reference points help you build in flexibility; they are not a forecast for any particular day.
Pack lightweight layers, rain protection and a dry change of clothes for after excursions. A pair of shoes suited to wet walking will be more useful in Cocora than shoes chosen solely for cobbled streets. Keep documents and devices in waterproof protection on boat trips.
Medellín’s neighborhoods
The first day can stay in the city: visit the Museo de Antioquia, see Fernando Botero’s sculptures and explore the downtown area, checking the museum’s opening hours for your date. The works displayed outdoors let you observe their volume and proportions before or after visiting the galleries. The metro is a practical reference point for understanding the city, but when choosing accommodation, also consider evening travel and where your excursions depart from.
El Poblado has a wide range of restaurants and nightlife, as noted by Colombia Travel. For this itinerary, both El Poblado and Laureles also have the practical advantage of being within the pickup area for the private Guatapé excursion selected later. Compare the exact address, noise levels and travel times rather than booking based on the neighborhood name alone. Ask your hotel to arrange an identified transport service for late arrivals.
A guided visit to Comuna 13 can fill another half-day. The selected option combines graffiti-covered streets, the guide’s commentary and a cable-car ride from San Javier. It is listed as a four-hour tour, with private transport and a cable-car ticket included; the tour is offered in English or Spanish. Its value lies in connecting the visible images with the neighborhood’s context. Ask people for permission before photographing them, and let residential spaces continue to serve their everyday purpose.

View activityGuatapé and El Peñol Rock
Guatapé deserves a separate day if you are staying four nights in Medellín. The selected private excursion combines the village with its decorated façades, El Peñol Rock and an additional stop. The listed itinerary lasts eight hours, including transport: we would schedule it between two days in the city rather than just before changing regions.
The key difference is what is included. A private vehicle and pickup are provided; lunch and admission to climb the rock must be paid for separately. The climb involves a substantial flight of stairs: you may prefer to spend more time in the village instead. The operator also says it can replace the stop at an animal farm with a fruit tasting. If you prefer this option, agree on the change before booking.
This trip is for travelers who want to discover a different landscape while returning to the same accommodation that evening. If you have only two full days in Medellín, we would prioritize the city and a guided visit, rather than adding Guatapé to an already busy day.

View activitySalento and coffee farms
In the coffee region, staying in one base makes it possible to visit the plantation, village and hiking trails separately. Salento has a main square, Calle Real and colorful houses whose traditional bahareque construction—using materials including wood, earth and reeds—is described by Colombia Travel. An afternoon in the village can follow your arrival, without a timed activity until your transfer is complete.
Next, choose between a room in town and rural accommodation. The first makes it easier to reach the meeting point for an excursion departing from the square. The second may offer more views and proximity to a farm, giving you more reason to spend time on site; ask for details about access, meals and transfer prices. A finca far from the center may require transport for every outing.
For a coffee farm visit, look for a program that explains each stage: growing coffee plants, harvesting, processing the coffee cherries, drying and preparing the coffee in the cup. A tasting is more rewarding when you can connect a flavor to a method. Ask what language the explanations are given in, how long the walk through the fields lasts and which activities will actually be visible on your date. Farm work follows a seasonal schedule; a visit does not guarantee that every stage will be underway on the same day.
The trails of Cocora Valley
Wax palms give Cocora its distinctive landscape, with tall trunks rising above the pastures. The valley offers several ways to see them. An outing focused on the first viewpoints and a full day in the forest watching birds involve different levels of effort. Set your goal before choosing an option.
Our recommended guided outing is the birdwatching hike departing from Salento’s main square. The eight-hour program includes transport in a Jeep Willys, breakfast, a picnic lunch, admission fees and binoculars. The described route passes through cloud forest, Acaime and the palm areas. The guide speaks English or Spanish; a moderate level of physical fitness is required, and restrictions are stated for certain back or cardiovascular conditions.
This day is suited to those who want to hike and observe wildlife, with meals and logistics arranged. You will need proper hiking shoes, rain protection and a light backpack. Confirm the trail is open with the provider after carrying out the regional checks mentioned above. If you only want to see the palms, arrange a suitable shorter outing instead: booking the long loop just for its name would mean an unnecessary day of hiking.

View activityThe walls of Cartagena
Cartagena de Indias is on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The fortified center, listed as a World Heritage Site in 1984 according to Colombia Travel, makes for a very different stop from the Andean villages. Set aside time for several walks: one to get your bearings among the squares and streets, another for the walls and buildings that interest you. Early-morning visits leave time to rest during the hottest hours.
San Felipe de Barajas Castle is a separate visit, not simply part of a tour of the center. Schedule it as such, including its admission and ticket, without assuming that an excursion called “Cartagena tour” includes it. Getsemaní offers different streets, murals and meeting places. Residents live amid heavy tourist traffic: be discreet near doorways and windows.
For accommodation, the fortified center makes it easy to get around on foot; Bocagrande offers a different setting, with hotels and urban beaches. Check the air conditioning, noise levels and pickup area for excursions. Your choice will depend above all on how you plan to spend your days: a stay focused on heritage is organized differently from one with several days mainly spent at the beach.
Bazurto and the mangroves
A guided outing can broaden your visit beyond the monumental center. The one we recommend connects Getsemaní, Bazurto Market and the fishing village of La Boquilla, with a canoe trip through the mangroves. The program lasts five hours and includes private transport and lunch; it is offered in English and Spanish.
This option brings together places and travel that would require more planning on your own. It suits a day when you want to learn about other aspects of city life: food trade, murals, fishing and the coastal environment. The provider says pickup may be available at hotels in the fortified city; confirm your exact address. Also inform them of any dietary requirements before lunch.
At the market, ask vendors for permission before taking photographs and keep your belongings close. In the mangroves, follow the guide’s instructions, particularly when boarding and moving around in the canoe. Book this outing for this specific itinerary; visit the walls, San Felipe Castle and the Rosario Islands at other times.

View activityThe Rosario Islands
With five nights in Cartagena, a day trip to the islands can fit in without changing your accommodation. The Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park protects, among other things, reefs and seagrass beds. Whether the outing is worthwhile depends on the actual itinerary: sailing, a beach stop, snorkeling, or several stops in one day.
Compare the departure port, type of boat, sailing times, lunch, and any applicable taxes. A booking at a beach club does not necessarily include a visit to the reefs. Ask what happens if port authorities suspend departures, then keep another day available. Follow the guidelines for protecting the environment and keep your distance from the corals.
For a first visit, we would also keep one full day free in Cartagena. That gives you time to return to a museum or neighborhood, reschedule an outing depending on the weather, and prepare for your return without an excursion that imposes a tight schedule.
Transfers and budget
Plan the connections before paying for activities: international arrival, Medellín, the coffee region if conditions allow, Cartagena, then the return. Compare the journeys actually offered on your dates, including connections and baggage allowances. A short flight time is only one part of the journey; add airport transfers and formalities. For road travel, request a recent estimate that takes local conditions into account.
Plan your budget by category: long-haul travel, domestic transport, thirteen nights, meals, activities, and insurance. Add transfers to a finca and separate services, such as admission to El Peñol Rock. Prices and reviews for our recommendations appear in the cards associated with the offers; compare the same group of travelers and the same inclusions when you book.
A private trip for two and a group outing cannot be compared on price per person alone. The language, pickup location, meals, and time actually spent on the visit may justify a difference. First book transport and accommodation that can be changed, then the few activities that shape the trip. This leaves room for walks around villages and neighborhoods.
Entry requirements and health
For holders of a French passport, France Diplomatie indicates that stays of up to ninety days are possible without a visa, provided you present a round-trip ticket. The Colombian authorities are responsible for the requirements applicable to your situation. The official Check-Mig form must be completed before entering and leaving by air or sea; use the Migración Colombia portal. Dual nationals and families with children should check the specific rules that apply to them.
A travel-medicine consultation can help assess vaccinations and precautions suited to your itinerary. The French health advisory notes, in particular, a resurgence of yellow fever; recommendations and requirements depend on the route and the traveler’s circumstances. Arrange insurance covering medical care and repatriation, as well as protection against mosquitoes.
Finally, current warnings about scopolamine call for practical precautions: do not leave your drink unattended, refuse drinks from strangers, and use safe transportation. France Diplomatie advises against using dating apps in Colombia. Keep your accommodation’s contact details handy and register your trip with Fil d’Ariane to receive relevant alerts.
FAQ
How many days do you need for Medellín, Salento, and Cartagena?
About two weeks gives you time to plan three bases and two interregional journeys without filling every day. Our allocation of thirteen nights is a suggestion: four in Medellín, four in Salento, and five in Cartagena. With ten days, choose two stops. Adding Salento depends on an up-to-date check of the situation in the coffee region.
Which month should you choose for this Colombia itinerary?
December to March is an interesting period to consider for the whole itinerary. The Andes can get showers even during a generally drier period; Cartagena remains hot. Seasonal guidance does not replace checking local forecasts and alerts as your trip approaches.
Can you currently travel via Pereira?
The French advisory consulted specifically advises against visiting central Pereira after the earthquake of August 10, 2026. Check the current alert, any airport access, and your exact route before making a purchase. This guide does not validate any specific transfer. The fact that an excursion is still bookable online does not prove that its local conditions have been rechecked.
Should you stay in Salento or at a finca?
Salento makes it easier to find meals and meet up for activities departing from the village. A finca offers more time on the farm and a rural setting, but transfers need to be arranged. For a four-night stay, choosing one well-connected place avoids repacking. Confirm the accommodation’s status before booking.
Can you discover coffee without going to Cocora?
Yes. A plantation visit and tasting suit an agricultural and culinary interest that is separate from hiking. Specify your mobility, preferred language, and access to the plots. You can spend one day on coffee and another in the village without booking a mountain loop.
Are the recommended excursions available in French?
The four selected products advertise a guide in English or Spanish, not French. The language of the booking page does not change the language of the tour. If French is essential, look for a service that explicitly states this before paying.
Should you book every day in advance?
Book the connections, accommodation, and activities that determine your itinerary, and check their change policies. Leave free time and a weather buffer for hiking or boating. In Cartagena, several independent walks let you explore the center without booking multiple paid excursions.
What documents should you prepare with a French passport?
Prepare your passport, the requested round-trip ticket, and the information needed for the official Check-Mig form, then check the Colombian requirements for your situation. Add your insurance certificate and any health documents required for your itinerary. Dual nationality, a child traveling with only one parent, or an international transit may require additional checks.
