Naxos for alternating between beaches and villages, Sifnos for walking and good food, Milos for exploring the coast by boat: choosing a Greek island depends above all on how you want to spend your days there. Folegandros and Ikaria offer two other kinds of stay, on different scales. Here’s how to choose a base for a week, with two bookable activities to extend your discovery.
Choosing an island base
A beach within walking distance, a village where you can have dinner in the evening and a well-connected port can shape your stay more than a list of famous sights. Before booking, decide how much of your time you want to spend swimming, walking and getting around. A secluded place to stay with a sea view calls for a different plan than a room in the main town.
The five islands featured here suit specific interests. Naxos offers the most versatile combination; Sifnos is a good fit for days of walking punctuated by meals; Milos puts volcanic landscapes and boat trips first. Folegandros lets you center your stay around a small area. Ikaria opens up a different geography, in the northern Aegean. Naxos and Milos are already well-known destinations: don’t book on the promise of solitude.
Naxos, between beaches and villages
The largest island in the Cyclades lets you vary your days without changing accommodation. In Chora, the Venetian castle, vaulted passageways and narrow streets make for a first stroll. The beaches of Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka then give your stay a beachside focus. Choose your accommodation based on how much you value evenings in town versus being close to the sand.
The interior is worth several outings: Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos reveal a different side of Naxos, with villages at the foot of the hills and ancient paths. Mount Zas towers over this part of the island. Plan a hike according to the actual route and your fitness level; a day visiting villages offers a more leisurely way to explore inland.
The island’s agricultural diversity also makes Naxos appealing to food lovers: potatoes, cheeses, lemons and olive oil are part of its identity. In town, the olive oil tasting, bread-making and meal experience makes for a structured two-hour break. It is offered in English or Greek, in a small group. The current meeting point is in Naxos Town; private transport is not included.

View activitySifnos, trails and cuisine
Sifnos suits people who like to plan a day around a trail and the village where it ends. Cultivated terraces, stone walls and old paved paths give walks a sense of continuity. Apollonia makes an interesting base if its narrow streets and evening outings matter to your stay. Consider access to trailheads and the return journey when choosing accommodation.
The Sifnos Trails network offers documented routes rather than just a collection of viewpoints. “The Agricultural Road” is listed at 7.5 kilometers and two hours thirty minutes; “The Eternal Capitals” at 8.6 kilometers and three hours five minutes. These are the route manager’s reference times: allow for your breaks and transfers. Check the route details before setting out, and bring water, suitable footwear and sun protection.
Walking pairs naturally with the island’s other traditions: pottery workshops, cooking and pastry-making. Leave enough flexibility in your days to visit a village, have lunch and return without rushing to catch a boat. Spring and autumn are the seasons recommended by Sifnos Trails; in July and August, the network advises against walking during the hottest hours.
Milos, landscapes from the sea
On Milos, the colors of the rocks and the contours of the coastline shape the trip. Sarakiniko and Kleftiko are among the places highlighted by the national tourism organization. The island’s volcanic origin explains the variety of its formations; the mining museum adds another dimension to exploring the coast.
A boat trip deserves a full day in your itinerary. The Oneiro tour featured here departs from Adamas to explore the west coast and Kleftiko. It runs for seven hours and includes commentary in English, swimming stops and meals. This option suits a stay where the sea plays a substantial role, giving you time to take in the coastal formations and enjoy the stops.
Schedule the trip early enough in the week to leave room to reschedule depending on the weather and the operator’s conditions. You can then use a day on land for a museum or a walk between villages. Before paying, check the meeting point, cancellation terms and whether you’re comfortable spending several hours on a boat.

View activityFolegandros, centered on Chora
On Folegandros, the terrain immediately sets the scale of your stay. Chora sits about two hundred meters above the sea, around a medieval core. The winding path up to the church of Panagia gives you a clear destination for a walk, while the squares and narrow streets invite you to return to the village at different times of day.
This island suits those who are happy to revisit the same places over several days and make them their base. Trails connect villages, chapels and the coast. When planning a swim, check how to reach each beach and how you’ll get back: a small island can still involve steep slopes and demanding journeys. For a first week, Chora makes it easy to plan around walks and evenings in the village; staying near a beach means choosing a different base.
Ikaria, a stay apart
Ikaria lies between Mykonos and Samos, in the northern Aegean. Its landscape combines mountains, ravines, vegetation and sandy coastlines. The village of Christos Rachon and the panigyria, local festivals featuring music and dancing, contribute to its cultural life. Festival dates should be checked for the dates of your stay; old calendars still available online are not enough to plan a booking around an upcoming edition.
Choose Ikaria if you want to spend time there, and stay near the area you want to explore. The island has an airport, but this access option does not remove the need to arrange transport on the island. In this selection, it is particularly well suited to a stay on a single island: adding it at the end of a Cyclades itinerary multiplies the connections you need to check. Walks and encounters with local people are reason enough to make the trip, without turning its reputation for longevity into a health promise.
Getting there and the season
To plan a week, start with the journeys actually available on your dates, then book your nights. Naxos, Milos and Ikaria have airports; Sifnos and Folegandros require arrival by sea. A flight to Athens and a ferry from Piraeus also involve a transfer between the airport and the port. Check every leg before booking a tight connection.
For walking, May, June, September and October are months to consider first, adapting your plans to the heat and the forecast. In late October, check opening hours, local transport and boat trips especially carefully. A destination guide remains useful throughout the year; the same activities are not necessarily offered in every season.
The budget for a week
Compare the full cost: transport to the island, accommodation, local travel, meals and activities. A cheaper room far from the village may mean extra transport costs. A well-chosen base also allows for free days spent between the beach, narrow streets and a walk, without booking something every day.
For seven nights, we recommend choosing one island, or at most two bases if a direct connection genuinely works with your chosen dates. Leave some extra time before your return flight, especially after a sea journey. The prices and reviews for the two selected activities are shown on their cards: compare what each includes and how it fits into your week, rather than adding excursions as soon as you book your accommodation.
FAQ
Which island should you choose for a first stay?
Naxos is our most versatile choice for combining beaches, villages and food over a week. Chora makes a convenient town base; accommodation near a beach is better suited to a seaside-focused itinerary. Check transport to the interior before choosing a place far from town.
Which island is best for hiking?
Sifnos has a network of documented routes that makes it easier to plan walks of different lengths. Check the distance, difficulty and return journey for each route. In spring and autumn, conditions are generally more favorable for walking than during the hottest hours of summer.
Can you stay without a car?
Yes, by focusing your stay around one base and excursions that are easy to reach. Chora in Naxos or Folegandros makes it possible to devote plenty of time to walks around town. For beaches and villages farther away, check local schedules, taxis and the return journey before booking; a summer connection does not necessarily reflect the autumn service.
Can you visit all five islands in one week?
This itinerary would leave too much time for transfers. Choose one island for five to seven nights, or two if the ferry crossings line up easily. Ikaria is particularly worth a dedicated trip rather than a rushed stop added to a Cyclades itinerary.
When should you go to hike and enjoy the sea?
May, June and September are good times to consider for this mixed itinerary. October can suit exploring villages and going for walks, but you will need to check more carefully which services are open and what the weather will be like. Swimming depends on how you tolerate the water temperature and on conditions that day.
Should you book boat trips in advance?
Book once your stay is confirmed and you are happy with the terms of the offer. In Milos, if possible, leave several days after your chosen date so you can discuss rescheduling if the weather is unfavorable. A product’s active status in the catalogue does not guarantee availability on your preferred date.
