Four days in Istanbul, three in Cappadocia, then a stay on the Lycian Coast: this itinerary combines palaces, rock-carved landscapes and the Mediterranean. The trip mainly needs planning around the two regional transfers. Here’s how to choose your bases, where to fit guided tours, and how to adapt the route to the season.
Three bases for fourteen days
For a first trip, we recommend keeping to three main accommodations: Istanbul, Göreme or a nearby town in Cappadocia, then Fethiye or Kaş on the coast. Each stop allows for several outings without having to repack every day. Choose your coastal base before arranging transport: Fethiye and Kaş provide access to different areas and are not a single seaside district.
A fourteen-day itinerary could set aside the first four days for Istanbul, the fifth for travel to Cappadocia, the sixth and seventh for regional sightseeing, the eighth for the connection to the coast, and the next four for the coast. Use the thirteenth day to get to your international departure city, with a final night there before your flight on the fourteenth. This plan leaves two full days in Cappadocia and several possible mornings on site; adjust the stops if the schedules cut too deeply into that time.
This breakdown is an organizational recommendation to adapt to the flights you find. With ten days, it is better to combine Istanbul with just one other region. If you have more time, first add a full day to your favorite stop: another neighborhood in Istanbul, a hike in Cappadocia or a day on the coast without a transfer. Ephesus and Pamukkale require a different geographical trade-off; we leave them out of this itinerary to preserve time in the three selected regions.
The seasons across the three regions
To combine walking, city sightseeing and time by the water, we prefer May–June and September–October. This is a travel preference, not a guarantee of temperature or swimming conditions. Your priorities matter more than any month presented as universally ideal: the sea, long walks and museums call for different itineraries.
In midsummer, schedule the most demanding outdoor visits early in the day and allow time for breaks in the shade. A day on a boat also calls for water and sun protection. In Cappadocia, bring a warm layer for early-morning departures, even when the rest of the trip seems to call for light clothing. Choose shoes for uneven ground and stairs, not just hotel terraces.
In November, plan the coastal portion around heritage, walks and outings actually offered on your dates. Swimming and boat trips remain weather-dependent. For November 2026, France Diplomatie also notes COP31 in Antalya from November 9 to 20, with possible effects on hotels and travel. This is particularly relevant to itineraries passing through Antalya; check the situation before finalizing your nights and transfers.
Istanbul and the historic peninsula
In Istanbul, spend the first day in Sultanahmet, choosing the interiors that genuinely interest you. The apparent proximity of the monuments makes it tempting to fit everything in, but entrances, security checks and breaks still take up part of the day. Two in-depth visits and a walk make for a more enjoyable itinerary than a string of tightly scheduled appointments. Wear clothing suitable for entering mosques and check the visiting arrangements for your date.
Allow plenty of time for Topkapı. The former residence of the sultans and center of government is explored through its courtyards, buildings, collections and gardens. Its layout helps explain the palace’s administrative and domestic functions as well as its architecture. We recommend setting aside half a day in your itinerary, choosing the areas accessible with your selected ticket.
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque can form another itinerary around Sultanahmet Square. A guide can help explain the historical transformations and architectural details; when booking, check which tickets are included. For Hagia Sophia, check visitor access and security arrangements separately rather than relying on the monument’s name alone in a tour itinerary.
The selected private tour offers options from one to three days, with an English- or Spanish-speaking guide. For this trip, the one-day option, at around seven hours, can structure your historical visit before you continue on your own. Entrance fees, lunch and any transport are paid separately; a vehicle depends on the option selected. Agree on your priorities with the operator: all the stops listed for several days will not fit into one.

View activityThe neighborhoods and the Bosphorus
Set aside a day to understand Istanbul from its shores. The historic peninsula, Beyoğlu, the Asian shore and the Bosphorus form distinct areas in the city’s official presentation. Connecting them over the course of your stay gives your visit more depth than packing in monuments in a single district.
One possible plan combines a walk near the water in Eminönü, a crossing chosen for its destination and a meal in the neighborhood where you arrive. Check the pier, service and last return before setting out. A public ferry and a narrated cruise suit different preferences: for a simple crossing, first look for a useful route; to take in the scenery, compare the itinerary and commentary language.
Beyoğlu and Karaköy make it possible to keep a day more flexible, with shopping streets, cafés and walks. Your choice of hotel affects these journeys. Sultanahmet makes it easier to set off on foot for the old city; accommodation in another neighborhood may better suit your evenings. Check the actual connections to your visits and the airport, as well as the slopes and stairs on the final walk.
Day four can accommodate a postponed visit, a stop at the market or a long break. This flexibility comes in handy after a late arrival or a change in opening hours. For lunch, lokanta culture and food-focused neighborhoods offer alternatives to eating in front of every monument. The tourist office also presents meyhane, meze, tea and coffee as part of the culinary experience.
Connections between stops
To reach Cappadocia, compare arrivals at Nevşehir and Kayseri with the transfers offered to your accommodation. The flight price alone is not enough to choose: your arrival time, luggage and final journey determine how much time you will really have. Confirm the transfer before departure and provide your flight number. A late arrival followed by a pre-dawn wake-up is worth factoring into the pace of your stay.
For the coast, search based on the base you have chosen: Dalaman is one of the airports to consider for the Fethiye area, while Antalya is another regional gateway to compare for a stay farther east. For Kaş, look into the full transfer from your chosen airport. This proposal assumes neither a direct flight from Cappadocia nor a particular connecting-flight schedule; check the options for your travel day before booking hotels.
We set aside a transition day for each change of region. You may sometimes be able to fit in a walk or dinner, but a paid visit soon after arrival makes the schedule fragile. For your international return, the proposed overnight stay in your departure city reduces reliance on a domestic flight on the same day. For separate tickets, review the change conditions carefully and consider the consequences of a delay.
Cappadocia around Göreme
Göreme is a convenient base for organizing visits, while Uçhisar or other towns may suit a stay centered on a particular type of accommodation. Compare access to excursions, the possibility of walking to dinner and the stairs at your lodging. A room carved into the rock also raises practical questions: windows, ventilation, bathroom and luggage access.
Exploring on the ground deserves as much attention as the balloon ride. The Göreme Open-Air Museum brings together rock-cut churches and frescoes; Zelve offers another collection of dwellings and places of worship. Paşabağ is a place to see the capped formations characteristic of some of the region’s landscapes. These visits offer complementary ways to understand the region, from geology to how people have used the terrain.
Spread them across a heritage visit, a regional outing and a walk suited to your abilities. For the valleys, choose an identified route with access and return arrangements included, then ask your accommodation or a guide about trail conditions. Impromptu photo outings before dawn require the same care as any other walk: lighting, footwear and familiarity with the route.
To explore this stop in more depth, our guide “Cappadocia: Three Days of Hot-Air Balloons, Valleys and Cave Hotels” details how to choose a base and activities. Here, the aim is to fit it in with Istanbul and the coast while allowing enough time between journeys.
The morning balloon ride
If the balloon ride is one of your priorities, schedule it for your first available morning and keep the following mornings flexible in case it is postponed. Whether it can go ahead depends on conditions and the operator’s arrangements. A postponement requires availability and agreement; your stay should not depend on a guaranteed launch on a specific morning.
The selected product lists two and a half hours for the entire experience, including transfers from serviced hotels and an English-speaking guide. This does not mean two and a half hours in the basket. Before booking, ask them to confirm the expected flight time, launch area, number of passengers and pickup arrangements for your hotel. The listing states a maximum of twenty-five travelers for the shared option.
All participants must understand the boarding and landing instructions. The listing advises against the activity for pregnant women and travelers with cardiovascular problems; mention any circumstances that may require specific medical advice. Also review the terms for cancellation by the operator and cancellation by you, as these are different situations.
After this early-morning outing, keep part of the day light. A late breakfast, a walk around town and a nearby visit let you enjoy the rest of your stay without immediately adding another long excursion. If you want to combine the balloon ride with a land tour on the same day, get both operators to confirm the timing works.

View activityKaymaklı, Zelve and Paşabağ
For a day without a car that connects several sites, we have selected the group tour combining Kaymaklı, Zelve, Paşabağ, viewpoints and a pottery workshop in Avanos. The listed duration is six to seven hours, with an English-speaking guide and a maximum of fourteen travelers. Transport, entrance fees and lunch are currently listed as included; drinks at lunch are extra.
This grouping suits the short stop proposed here: it brings the regional journeys together in one day. The underground city offers a different perspective on how people made use of the rock, before the landscapes and above-ground structures. The Avanos workshop is part of the itinerary; factor it into your decision rather than assuming the entire duration is free time at the sites.
Zelve and the Göreme Open-Air Museum are two separate places. Set aside another time slot in Göreme if the churches and their frescoes are a priority. For underground passages, ask about stairs and narrow spaces before booking for anyone with limited mobility or a strong sensitivity to enclosed spaces. The name of a tour alone does not tell you whether each of its stops is accessible.

View activityFethiye or Kaş as a base
For the final part of the trip, choose a base according to the days you most want to spend. Fethiye suits a mix of coastal-town life, heritage and outings nearby. The rock tombs of ancient Telmessos and Kayaköy offer plenty to explore on days when you want to leave the beach. The regional tourism office places Kayaköy south of Fethiye and explains that the village was abandoned following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey.
A visit to Kayaköy is more meaningful when you keep this human history in mind. The houses and religious buildings belonged to a community; take time to read the information available on site. When choosing accommodation, distinguish between staying in central Fethiye and staying at a property near one of the area’s beaches. Compare access to meals, excursion departure points and transport rather than looking only at the advertised distance to the sea.
Kaş lends itself more naturally to plans focused on the Kekova and Simena area, as well as the Lycian heritage nearby. GoTürkiye describes Kekova’s partially submerged ruins and the village of Kaleköy, ancient Simena, crowned by its castle. Patara is another option for combining archaeology and coastline; plan it as a separate outing.
For four days on the coast, we recommend keeping one accommodation base and two main plans: a boat trip, if one is operating on your dates, and a heritage day. The rest of the time can be set aside for a walk, an accessible beach or simply relaxing. Splitting your stay between Fethiye and Kaş makes sense if you have more time and want the transfer itself to be part of the trip.
Boat trips along the Lycian coast
Choose a boat trip first by its departure port and route. Check the exact meeting point, stops on land, advertised swimming times, available shade and meal arrangements. If hotel pickup is offered, it should be included in the option you select. The same area name can cover trips of very different lengths, depending on the initial route.
At Kekova, the archaeological remains visible near the water make the boat trip particularly interesting. Follow local rules and the crew’s instructions about accessible areas; don’t plan to swim freely above every ruin you see. If you want to visit Kaleköy, check whether going ashore and time at the site are actually included in the itinerary, then consider access to the castle in light of your mobility.
You can plan this part after choosing your base, with an operator whose route and conditions suit the season. In late autumn, keep a land-based alternative and choose accommodation that remains pleasant for several days of walks or rest.
Budget and meals
Build your budget by category: international flights, domestic connections, baggage, transfers, accommodation, admission fees, meals and activities. Give the balloon flight its own line, as it can significantly change the available budget. The cards for the three offers show their prices, currency and available reviews, without repeating these changeable details in every paragraph.
Then compare the full inclusions. In Istanbul, the private guide leaves admission fees and lunch for you to cover. By contrast, the Cappadocia group tour says that admission fees and lunch are included. If you’re travelling with others, check whether the selected price applies per person, to a group or to a particular option. A starting price is not a quote for your specific party.
Meals can give the days a pleasant rhythm. In Istanbul, alternate a simple stop at a lokanta with a longer dinner over meze, if that appeals to you. Set aside time for tea or coffee instead of packing visits in until evening. For allergies and special diets, confirm ingredients and what the restaurant or operator can accommodate; a dish’s name does not guarantee how it is prepared.
Before-you-go formalities
For French nationals holding ordinary passports, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that they are exempt from visas for stays of up to ninety days. However, check the conditions that apply to your document and circumstances before booking. Rules depend on nationality and travel document type; one family booking may include travellers in different situations.
Also consult France Diplomatie while planning your trip and again before departure. Weather alerts, wildfires and the regional situation may mean adjusting your travel plans. The proposed itinerary focuses on Istanbul, Cappadocia and the southwest; it does not justify an improvised extension to an area subject to specific travel advisories.
Finally, keep accommodation contact details, transfer confirmations and excursion terms available offline. Check that your insurance covers the activities you have planned, particularly ballooning or water sports. Planning in stages lets you book the key elements while leaving several days fairly open for the trip itself.
FAQ
Is fourteen days enough to visit all three regions?
Yes, provided you keep three main bases and set aside proper time for transport. The suggested itinerary allows four days in Istanbul, a short stay of several nights in Cappadocia and four days on the coast, followed by some leeway before your international flight. If connections are inconvenient, drop one region rather than cutting every break.
Should I rent a car for the whole trip?
We recommend deciding region by region. In Istanbul, choose your hotel and transport based on the neighbourhoods you plan to visit. In Cappadocia, the guided tour featured here covers several sites without requiring you to drive. On the coast, a car may suit independent excursions, but compare parking, transfers and the days you’ll stay at your base before renting one.
Which coastal base should I choose, Fethiye or Kaş?
Fethiye suits you if you want to alternate walks around town with nearby outings and a visit to Kayaköy. Kaş is a better fit for plans focused on Kekova, Simena and the area’s heritage. For a short stay, choose based on your two priority outings and the available transfer, then keep the same accommodation.
Can a hot-air balloon flight be guaranteed?
Take-off depends on conditions and the operator’s decision. Book an initial morning and leave time to accommodate a rescheduled flight, without assuming it will happen. The selected option advertises a total duration of one hundred and fifty minutes, including transfers; confirm separately the expected time in the basket and the cancellation policy.
Are all three activities guided in French?
The products checked list English or Spanish for the private Istanbul tour, and English for both Cappadocia activities. Select the language offered for your date. If French is essential, choose another offer that explicitly confirms it before purchase.
Does a French national need to apply for an e-visa?
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that French nationals holding ordinary passports are exempt from visas for stays of up to ninety days. Check the conditions for your document and purpose of travel on official websites. Anyone travelling on another nationality’s passport should consult the relevant section, even if they live in France.
Is this itinerary suitable for November 2026?
Yes, with the coast planned around walks and heritage, and boat trips confirmed for your dates. Pack clothes suitable for Cappadocia mornings and have an alternative to outdoor activities. If your route takes you through Antalya from November 9 to 20, take account of the official COP31 alert and its possible effects on hotels and travel.
Which bookings should I make first?
Start with flights and transfers that make all three stops work, then book accommodation. Next, book your first-morning balloon flight and any guided visits you want. Independent days and meals can be kept more flexible. Before each payment, reread the inclusions, language, meeting point and cancellation terms for the exact product.
