In Tbilisi, the bathhouse domes are just a few streets from the houses with balconies, while the wine-growing valley of Kakheti takes a full day to visit. For a first trip to Georgia, a week lets you connect these discoveries without changing hotels every night. Here’s how to plan your time in the capital, two excursions and, depending on the season, a stop in the Caucasus.
The pace of a first week
Keep Tbilisi as your base if you’re coming for the old neighborhoods, cuisine, baths and a first introduction to Georgian wine country. Three days in the city, an outing to Mtskheta and a day in Kakheti already make for a substantial stay. Arrival and departure days are taken up with travel; having an evening free after landing is no substitute for a day of sightseeing.
For seven nights, we suggest arriving and spending two days in the capital, then visiting Mtskheta, having a more relaxed day in the city, spending a day in Kakheti and keeping the final day free. Use that last slot to explore a neighborhood in more depth, return to a winery or reschedule an excursion. It makes the itinerary adaptable to fatigue, rain and traffic conditions. Fit in the baths on a day in Tbilisi, with a separate reservation.
If the mountains are the main reason for your trip, book two nights in Stepantsminda and cut back on other outings. You can then spend three nights in Tbilisi at the start, head to the Caucasus for two nights and return to the capital before your flight. Kakheti becomes an optional extra, depending on how much time you have. A week combining the city, wine country and mountains means setting priorities; several long days on the road in a row leave little time for walks.
We recommend booking your accommodation first, along with your arrival transfer, then activities with a fixed departure time. Keep walks flexible. This arrangement also suits travelers who would rather get to know a few places than collect regions: western Georgia’s landscapes and the villages of Svaneti deserve a separate itinerary, with their own stops.
Neighborhoods to stay in
The area around Freedom Square and the edges of the old town make a convenient base for a first visit on foot. You can easily reach the old streets and restaurants while staying close to major routes. Check the exact address: a few hundred meters on a map could mean an uphill climb, stairs or an alley that is difficult to navigate with a suitcase.
Sololaki appeals to those who enjoy facades, doorways and residential streets near the center. Staying in this area lets you fit in short walks at the beginning and end of the day. Older buildings vary in layout; check the floor, whether there is an elevator, the heating and how to access your room. A balcony photo won’t tell you about these practical details.
The area around Rustaveli offers a different setup: more major roads and a connection to the capital’s cultural life. The avenue is home to the Opera, theaters and institutions, among other things. However, France Diplomatie reports regular demonstrations in Tbilisi and recommends avoiding gatherings. Check the situation before deciding on your evening route, especially near government buildings.
When choosing between two hotels, prioritize the daily trip back over the view alone. A quiet room, easy walking access and an excursion meeting point that’s simple to reach will make more difference over a week than a view you enjoy for a few minutes. Also ask whether late-night arrivals are possible if your flight lands late. The accommodation’s written terms should match your actual arrival time.
Walks through old Tbilisi
The Mtkvari helps you understand the city. The old districts lie along its banks and on the nearby slopes; crossing the river quickly changes your perspective. From the Metekhi area, you look out toward the houses and hills of the old town. On the opposite bank, lanes lead toward Abanotubani and the façades that make up Tbilisi’s best-known image.
Set aside your first half-day to get your bearings without trying to fit in every museum. A walk through the old streets, along the river and through the bath district gives you a sense of the layout. Cobbles and steep slopes slow you down. Supportive shoes make exploring more enjoyable than following the shortest route calculated by an app.
The city center is also notable for the proximity of places of worship belonging to different communities. Georgia Travel lists Georgian Orthodox churches, Armenian churches, a mosque and synagogues, among others. Take in the façades, and go inside only when visiting conditions allow. Respect services, dress codes and photography restrictions on site; no general tourist ticket gives you access to all these interiors.
Another day could combine Sololaki with a cultural area around Rustaveli. Choose just one major indoor attraction, depending on the collections or performance that interests you. Mtatsminda offers a different outing, focused on the heights and views over the capital. The tourism office lists the funicular as one way to get there; check its operating status and ticketing for the day of your visit.
The sulfur baths of Abanotubani
The baths explain part of the layout of old Tbilisi: naturally hot water supplies establishments clustered in the Abanotubani district. The low domes and the decorated façade of Chreli Abano already offer an architectural experience. Georgia Travel also mentions Bath No. 5, Gulo and several other establishments. A stroll through the district and a bathing session are two separate activities to plan.
To book, first choose between a shared area and a private room, then check what the package includes. Ask how long you can use the room, how many people are allowed, whether there is a pool, and what the towel rental terms are. If you would like a scrub or massage, clarify the extra charge and how it is arranged. The name of an establishment alone does not tell you what each of its rooms is equipped with.
Schedule your session for a quiet day in the capital. After a walk through the lanes, it can make a pleasant break before dinner; it is less easy to combine with a return from an excursion when the timing depends on the road. Leave some time between your booking and your meal. Prices vary depending on the room, its capacity and the services; get the total cost for your group before confirming.
Hot water and a humid atmosphere call for paying attention to how you feel. Get out of the pool if you feel unwell, and seek medical advice beforehand if your health situation warrants it. We recommend the baths for their place in urban culture and for relaxation. Claims about detoxification or preventing infections should not factor into your booking decision.
Food throughout your days
Khinkali are a good first order for discovering Georgian cuisine: these dumplings contain a filling, often meat, and juice. In the capital, the kalakuri version includes herbs. Ask about the ingredients and portion size before ordering several dishes. Sharing a meal lets you try more dishes without turning every lunch into an oversized tasting.
Khachapuri comes in different regional varieties. The Adjarian boat-shaped version is filled with cheese and egg; the Imeretian version encloses cheese in round dough, while the Megrelian version has cheese added on top. Try different varieties over the course of your stay. They can be shared among several people or make for a generous order, depending on the serving size at the restaurant.
For variety, look for lobio, made with beans, and ajapsandali, in which eggplant plays a central role. Recipes vary: Georgia Travel describes versions that include meat, among others. Similarly, a vegetable dish may contain butter, nuts or other ingredients that matter for your diet. Explain any allergies and dietary restrictions directly to the restaurant rather than relying on an approximate translation of the menu.
A week gives you time to compare bakeries, neighborhood restaurants and more elaborate dining rooms. We recommend leaving one meal open after the heritage excursion and having a simple dinner on the evening of the Kakheti trip. Tastings do not necessarily replace lunch, and activity listings specify what is included. Also make time for meals without wine: the food itself offers plenty of variety.
Wines of Kakheti
Kakheti is easier to explore if you start with a specific question: do you want to see the region’s towns and monasteries, or spend most of your time with a producer? A general sightseeing tour combines stops, scenery and tastings. A technical visit to a winery calls for a tailored appointment, more time on site and sometimes an overnight stay in the region.
A qvevri is a large clay vessel used to make and store wine. Burying it in the ground is part of the traditional method described by Georgia Travel. To understand what you are tasting, ask about the grape variety, the length of skin contact and the producer’s choices. Saperavi and Rkatsiteli are among Kakheti’s important grape varieties; they provide points of comparison between glasses.
The words “qvevri,” “orange,” “organic” and “natural” describe different things. A qvevri refers to a vessel and a method; amber color can result from macerating white grapes with their skins; farming practices and cellar interventions should be asked about separately. If you are coming specifically for natural wines, ask which wineries will be visited and which cuvées will be served.
For a first taste without driving, the selected excursion from Tbilisi combines Bodbe, Sighnaghi, Telavi and several advertised tastings. It lasts nine hours and accommodates up to nineteen travelers. The available languages are English and Russian. Lunch is separate; confirm the meeting point with the operator. We recommend it for combining regional sightseeing and wine, with transport arranged.
Sighnaghi offers a view of the Alazani Valley from a hilltop town, while Telavi provides another entry point to the region. Visits to religious sites call for appropriate clothing, even in the middle of a day of tastings. If you want to take part in the grape harvest, look for a dated offer from a winery: harvest time depends on the grapes and the conditions that year, and no general date guarantees that you will be able to participate.

View activityMtskheta, Jvari and the Chronicles
Mtskheta offers a heritage-focused day that differs from a vineyard visit. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Jvari Monastery on its hilltop and the town’s streets make for a cohesive itinerary for exploring Georgia’s religious history. On the selected route, the Chronicles of Georgia add a monumental stop near Tbilisi, recognizable by its large sculpted pillars.
The excursion we reviewed lasts six hours, with an English-speaking guide and a group of no more than fifteen people. It departs from Rose Revolution Square; hotel pickup is not included. This option suits you if you want to visit the sites and hear the explanations without arranging the connections between the town, the hill and the monument yourself. Check the location and time shown on your confirmation.
A winery visit is included in the service, while the tasting described is optional and paid. Plan for lunch separately as well. This detail matters when comparing it with the Kakheti day trip: both excursions may include some contact with wine, but their main focus is different. Here, we recommend prioritizing the monuments and historical commentary.
You can book both trips during a week-long stay, spacing them out with a day in the capital. If you choose only one, Mtskheta is the better fit if you are primarily interested in heritage; Kakheti emphasizes wine-growing landscapes and tastings. Also compare the duration: a six-hour outing leaves you with a more flexible late afternoon than a nine-hour regional itinerary.

View activityStepantsminda and the Caucasus
Stepantsminda, often searched for under the name Kazbegi, changes the scale of the stay. Georgia Travel indicates about a three-hour drive from Tbilisi, without guaranteeing traffic conditions. Stops and mountain conditions add to the journey. Two nights allow you to keep a full day on site and leave room to adjust outings to the weather.
The Gergeti Trinity Church, built in the 14th century, overlooks the surrounding area at an altitude of about 2,200 metres. Its appeal combines architecture with its position in the landscape. Depending on conditions and your abilities, plan to reach it on foot or by suitable local transport. If you are hiking, confirm the actual starting point and route; a general duration published online does not describe every ascent option.
Mount Kazbek may remain hidden in the clouds. Bring warm clothing even in the favorable season, then check the local forecast before deciding how to spend the day. France Diplomatie warns of avalanches, rockfalls and landslides. A climb or strenuous hike requires proper preparation, a qualified guide and insurance covering the relevant rescue services.
In late October and November, we favor an urban and cultural itinerary for a first week. The mountains remain an option, subject to checking access and weather conditions. Avoid scheduling the drive back from Stepantsminda just before your flight: a night in Tbilisi before departure gives you useful breathing room. Travel to Russia and the regions subject to travel warnings are not part of this itinerary.
Season and getting around
For a mix of city walks and a wine-country excursion, May–June and September–October are our first periods to consider. This choice suits a mixed itinerary, while the actual weather should determine which days you go out. In summer, adjust long walks to the temperatures; in late autumn, favor nearby visits and indoor breaks. Conditions in the Caucasus should be checked separately from those in the capital.
A rental car offers little benefit for days spent in the old town. You can get around the capital on foot, using public transport and occasional taxi rides; the two suggested excursions arrange their own transport according to their respective meeting points. On arrival, confirm the complete transfer to your accommodation, the agreed price and how your luggage will be handled.
When traveling outside the capital, take care in choosing your driver. France Diplomatie reports a high level of road insecurity and recommends particular caution at night. An organized trip means you do not have to drive, but you should still check the service, schedule and vehicle provided. In the mountains, conditions on the day take precedence over a commercial itinerary or an app’s estimate.
For your budget, distinguish between accommodation, meals, urban transport, baths and excursions. The Georgian lari is the currency used locally; offers may be displayed in another currency. Compare the total amount for your group and what is included, then add any stated meals and supplements. Prices and available reviews remain in the central cards, without repeating figures that may change.
Entry requirements and safety
French nationals are exempt from visas for stays of up to one year, according to France Diplomatie. You still need an accepted identity document that is valid for the duration of your stay; a valid passport makes planning easier, especially if you have connecting flights. Also keep your accommodation and return-trip documents and proof of funds accessible in case of checks.
Since January 1, 2026, foreign visitors must have health and accident insurance valid for the entire stay. The certificate must be in English or Georgian, with minimum coverage of 30,000 GEL. Check your policy’s guarantees and covered activities; a general policy may require an extension for mountain activities. Carry the certificate and the assistance phone number.
Check the Travel Advice before departure and avoid demonstrations. The French authorities advise against all travel to Abkhazia, South Ossetia and the areas around them. For prescription medicines, check Georgian regulations before packing your medical kit: some medicines commonly used in Europe are subject to significant restrictions. If traveling with children, also check that the passport photo still accurately identifies them.
FAQ
How many days do you need to visit Tbilisi and its surroundings?
Three full days give you a first taste of the neighborhoods, meals and baths. With a week, add Mtskheta and a day in Kakheti, while keeping some flexibility. For Stepantsminda, plan on two nights and drop another excursion. The choice depends mainly on your interest in the mountains and how many days you actually have outside travel days.
Which season should you choose for your first trip?
We recommend comparing May–June and September–October for an itinerary combining the city and wine country. In November, prioritize Tbilisi and cultural outings. Decide on a mountain stop based on local conditions, independently of the weather in the capital. Confirm the harvest period with the winery hosting you.
Can you organize this week without a car?
Yes, by using Tbilisi as your base, with walks, public transport and organized excursions. The two selected products have meeting points; they do not include automatic pickup from your hotel. If staying overnight outside the capital, also plan the return journey and leave a buffer before your flight.
How do you choose a room at the Abanotubani baths?
Ask for a description of the exact room, its capacity and the price for the entire time you want to book. Confirm what is included: pool, towels, scrub and extra services. A private room is suitable for those who want to share the time slot with their companions. Confirm directly with the establishment and keep written proof of the reservation.
Is qvevri wine always natural?
No. The term refers to the vessel and a winemaking method; on its own, it does not tell you about farming practices or all cellar interventions. Ask the producer or wine merchant about these. For an excursion focused on natural wines, get the names of the wineries and details of the visit before booking.
Should you choose Mtskheta or Kakheti?
Mtskheta is the better choice if you are primarily interested in religious heritage and guided monument visits. Kakheti combines towns, wine-country landscapes and tastings over a longer day. A week can accommodate both, with a day in the city between them. If you are traveling with children or prefer less time on the road, compare the durations carefully.
Can you visit Kazbegi from Tbilisi in one day?
A road trip there and back is possible when conditions allow, but much of the day will be spent in a vehicle. To explore Stepantsminda and adapt an outing to Gergeti to the weather, we recommend two nights. In late autumn and winter, check access before proceeding with the trip and keep a night in Tbilisi before your flight.
What insurance do you need to show in Georgia?
Health and accident insurance has been mandatory for foreign visitors since January 2026. It must cover the entire stay for at least 30,000 GEL, with a certificate in English or Georgian. Also check exclusions and mountain rescue coverage if those activities are part of your itinerary. Visa exemption does not remove this requirement.
Is this itinerary suitable for families?
You can shorten the city days, focusing on one walking area and taking breaks. Cobblestones, slopes and stairs make some routes difficult with a stroller. For excursions, confirm age requirements and necessary equipment with the operator. Choose a bath room suitable for your family and ask about conditions for children before booking.
