Ten days are enough to connect Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve with three places to stay and two full travel days. Here is a north-to-south itinerary, with Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon and the cliffs of Lagos to finish, without renting a car to cross the country.

Three Bases and Nine Nights

The itinerary starts with three nights in Porto, continues with three nights in Lisbon and ends with three nights in Lagos. Day ten is for departure, ideally from Faro Airport. This arrangement assumes you arrive in Porto on day one and have a return flight late enough to get to the airport from Lagos. For an early departure, move the last night's stay to Faro.

The north-to-south order avoids backtracking. Compare the cost of flights arriving in Porto and departing from Faro before buying a round trip to Lisbon: the extra journey may cancel out the savings on the ticket. If your flights require you to use the same airport, allow for the return journey within the ten days and remove a stop rather than cramming in every visit.

Days 4 and 7 are set aside for changing cities. The train, waiting, luggage and checking in take longer than the journey time shown on its own. So paid activities are scheduled on full days. The itinerary leaves one flexible day in Porto and another in Lagos, so you can choose what to do based on your interests and the weather.

Day 1: Porto's Waterfront

After your journey, a first stroll along the Douro is enough. Once you've dropped off your bags, head to Ribeira and look at how the houses rise above the waterfront. The Luís I Bridge connects the two banks; you'll have more time to explore Vila Nova de Gaia on day three. On arrival, stay on the side of the river where you're staying if you're feeling tired.

Plan to eat near your accommodation rather than booking a table at the other end of the city. Porto is a city of ups and downs: getting back to a room near the river may mean a steep climb after dinner. Check the hotel's actual access, stairs and luggage drop-off options before choosing a place just for its view.

If your flight lands in the evening, save this walk for the next day. No essential visit depends on day one, which makes this schedule workable with different arrival times.

Day 2: Central Porto

Your first full day follows the higher parts of the center before descending toward the river. The Clérigos area, the streets around São Bento and the surroundings of the Sé make for a cohesive walking route. Choose one monument to visit inside, according to your interests, then leave time between stops. The squares, façades and views over the Douro will already fill much of the day.

A guided walk can be useful here to understand the city's terrain and spot places to revisit. We recommend the C&D Porto Local Tours walk: it starts near Clérigos, is conducted in English and ends near the Douro. The route passes through the historic neighborhoods and the center's main landmarks; arrange monument admissions separately.

This option replaces a self-guided morning walk. After lunch, return to a place you spotted with the guide or stay near the waterfront. Combining a guided tour, several timed-entry tickets and a crossing to Gaia would leave little room for breaks.

Day 3: Gaia or the Douro

For the main itinerary, we recommend spending a day between the two banks. Cross to Vila Nova de Gaia to see Porto from the other side of the Douro, then choose a cellar tour if you're interested in wine. Book the session and language you want directly with your chosen cellar. The rest of the day can stay flexible: take a walk, have lunch and revisit a neighborhood you'd like to explore further.

The Douro Valley is an alternative for travelers whose main interest is the vineyards. It replaces this city day and calls for choosing an excursion with clearly stated departure details, meal and tastings. The estates are outside Porto; exploring the city and taking a wine tour in the valley cater to two different interests.

With only ten days, we'd keep Gaia for a first, general-interest trip. That leaves two full days in Porto before moving to the next base. For a wine-focused trip, you can instead spend day three in the valley and save the waterfront for your first evenings. The Lisbon visits and coastal days then remain unchanged.

Day 4: The Train to Lisbon

Search for your journey from Porto-Campanhã to Lisbon, comparing Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services. The journey takes around three hours, depending on the train and arrival station; CP’s booking engine provides the exact timetable for your date. Add the trip from your hotel to Campanhã and the journey from the Lisbon station to your new accommodation.

A morning departure generally gives you time to settle in and then go out without a packed schedule. Keep your tickets and train information accessible offline. If you have a large suitcase, allow time to reach the platform and use the luggage areas without blocking the passageways.

In Lisbon, a first outing around Rossio and Baixa is a good way to get your bearings. Continue down towards Praça do Comércio if you feel up to it. This first evening is also a chance to prepare for Sintra: check your ticket, any meeting point, and what to wear for a hill that can be cooler than central Lisbon.

Day 5: Baixa and Alfama

The day connects Baixa’s squares with Alfama’s narrow streets. Plan the uphill sections according to your comfort with walking, and allow for a long lunch break. In Alfama, the Santa Luzia viewpoint offers a view of the tiled rooftops and the Tagus; the area around the Sé and Portas do Sol naturally extends the visit. The tourist office highlights the neighborhood’s cobblestones and steep slopes: choose shoes that grip on surfaces that can be slippery.

For a guided introduction, the Lisbon neighborhoods walking tour offered here brings together Rossio, Chiado, Baixa, and Alfama. The guide speaks English; the tour includes tastings, while full meals, transfers, and monument admissions are at your own expense. It suits travelers who want to explore several neighborhoods on one guided walk.

Belém fits into another version of this day: focus on the riverside area and reduce Alfama to an evening visit or move it to the previous day. One full day in Lisbon means making a choice. To spend more time in Belém, the castle, and several museums, skip Sintra or add a night in the capital by shortening your time in the Algarve.

Day 6: Pena and Sintra

From Lisbon, Sintra offers a day among wooded hills and at Pena Palace. The operator offers tickets for a specific date and time. If traveling independently, take the train to Sintra, then arrange transport up to the park; Parques de Sintra lists bus 434, among other options. Arriving at the station does not mean you have arrived at the palace.

Private vehicles are not permitted to access the monument. Renting a car for this day alone does not solve the final leg of the journey. Allow extra time before your time slot, for getting around the park, and for lunch back in central Sintra. You can keep the visit focused on Pena and the town, without adding several other palaces.

The selected five-hour excursion includes the Pena Essential ticket and a stop in the historic center. The palace interior is visited independently; guided commentary is available in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. The announced meeting point is near the Hard Rock Café in Lisbon. The tour groups travelers together and uses vehicles with up to eight passenger seats, depending on the inclusions; multiple vehicles may be used.

Compare the Essential option with the Complete visit if particular apartments are of special interest. Arrange lunch and Regaleira separately from this excursion. For this ten-day itinerary, the shorter option makes it possible to return to Lisbon and prepare your luggage before heading south the next day.

Day 7: Lisbon to Lagos

Lagos will be your only base in the Algarve. By train, search for the full journey from Lisbon to Lagos, including the connection at Tunes. Long-distance trains to Faro continue along a different route after this station. Buying a ticket only to Faro would take you past the junction you need for Lagos.

Some rail combinations take around four hours; then add the trips to the stations, waiting time, and getting settled. CP’s published schedules vary by service, so check the connection and arrival time in particular rather than relying on a departure time found in an old guide. You can also compare coach services for your date, taking the exact departure and arrival addresses into account.

In Lagos, stay around the center, the river, and the marina for your first evening. The following day will leave more time for the cliffs. Accommodation within walking distance of the center or marina makes meals and activities easier without a vehicle; still, check the slope, distance, and access with your luggage.

Day 8: Ponta da Piedade

The rock formations of Ponta da Piedade are the main focus of this day. From the permitted viewpoints, you can see the cliffs from above; from a boat, the arches and caves take on a different scale. The municipality also describes a long staircase descending to the sea. Choose your approach based on how much walking you want to do and the conditions that day.

We recommend Dolphin Seafaris’ small-boat trip from Lagos marina. It follows the coast towards Ponta da Piedade, with commentary in English or Portuguese and life jackets provided. Meet at the Loja 5 office in the marina, fifteen minutes before the announced departure time. Dona Ana and Camilo beaches are among the areas seen from the water.

Schedule this activity for your first full day in the Algarve so you can move it to the following day if needed. The skipper adapts the route to sea conditions; entering a particular cave depends on the conditions. Keep lunch and the afternoon flexible after the trip. A walk along the designated paths is enough to round out the visit without adding more boat excursions.

Day 9: Lagos beaches

This day can serve as a backup for the boat trip or for exploring on land. Praia da Batata is near the historic center; Meia Praia has a much longer stretch of sand. The municipality describes the latter as more than four kilometers of coastline, extending towards the Alvor estuary. Choose your beach based on how far you want to travel rather than hopping between coves for just a few minutes each.

Dona Ana and Camilo are especially appealing to travelers drawn by the cliff scenery. Access involves stairs; check conditions on site before going down. Stay on permitted paths and away from both the edges and the base of the cliffs. If you swim, follow the flags and local instructions, and check whether lifeguards are actually on duty during your visit.

The itinerary deliberately keeps Lagos as your base. Adding Benagil, Sagres, and the eastern coast to this same day would mean extra travel. If one of these places is a key reason for your trip, replace the beach day with a dedicated excursion, then return to Lagos for the night. Spending your last evening near your accommodation also makes the final preparations easier.

Day 10: Departing from Faro

Departing from Faro requires a proper transfer from Lagos. The regional train serves Faro city; the airport then requires an additional connection. Compare the full journey with a road transfer, taking into account your flight time, luggage, and the buffers required by your airline.

For an early-morning flight, spend your last night in Faro and shorten day 9 in Lagos. If your flight is later, a final stroll may still be possible, provided you first set your departure time for the airport. Do not schedule a boat trip with an uncertain timetable before this journey. The itinerary ends more smoothly when the long-distance travel is taken care of before any final shopping or lunch.

Accommodation, budget, and season

In Porto and Lisbon, a central location with good transport links matters more than a parking space. Compare access with luggage, elevator availability and nighttime noise. In Lagos, staying close to the centre and marina makes it easier to get by without a car. An address described as “near Lagos” may require transport for every meal: check the map before booking.

To work out your budget, add up nine nights, flights, the two intercity connections, the airport transfer and local transport. Then add meals and the activities you actually choose. Request prices for your dates and exact number of travellers; an average daily amount does a poor job of showing the difference between a shared room and a single room. Prices and reviews for the four suggested activities remain on their cards, with the currency returned by the supplier.

For this mix of cities and coast, we prefer May–June or September. April and October can work with flexible planning. In midsummer, plan exposed walks for earlier in the day and allow time in the shade. From November to March, build the trip mainly around cities and scenery: swimming and boat trips remain dependent on conditions.

FAQ

Is ten days enough for Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve?

Yes, with three bases and two travel days. This itinerary allows two full days for Porto, one for Lisbon, one for Sintra and two for Lagos. To explore the capital in greater depth or visit several parts of the Algarve, drop a region or extend your stay. Arrival and departure days should not be counted as full sightseeing days.

Which direction should I plan the trip in?

Porto, Lisbon and then Lagos works well if you arrive in the north and fly home from Faro. The reverse order also works with suitable flights. Compare schedules and total transport costs first; having to return to Porto after Lagos significantly changes how the ten days are allocated.

Should I rent a car in Portugal?

The three bases on this itinerary are connected by public transport. Porto and Lisbon’s centres are best explored on foot and by urban transport, while in Lagos you can combine the centre, marina and nearby beaches. A car becomes more useful for several days in rural areas or for staying somewhere remote. In that case, you can rent one just for that part of the trip.

How do I get to Lagos from Lisbon by train?

Search for Lagos as your final destination on the CP website. The rail journey involves changing at Tunes from the long-distance train to the regional service. Check both legs for your date, as well as any disruptions. Faro is on a different continuation of the long-distance line.

Can I add the Douro Valley?

Yes, by replacing day 3, which is dedicated to Gaia and Porto. A day trip avoids the need for a fourth accommodation base. If you want to stay at an estate and visit several wineries, extend the trip or spend less time in the Algarve: transfers and tastings take up a significant part of the schedule.

Which Algarve base should I choose without a car?

Lagos fits this itinerary well for its historic centre, boat trips from the marina and the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade. Check how far your accommodation is from the departure points. Another base may be better for a trip focused on the Ria Formosa or the eastern part of the region; you would need to revise the two coastal days proposed here.

Is this itinerary suitable for children or people who have difficulty walking?

It requires some adjustments: fewer neighbourhoods to explore on foot, more breaks and accommodation with easy access. Porto, Alfama and Sintra have hills; several beaches in Lagos are reached by stairs. For each excursion, confirm your group’s needs, child seats and actual accessibility with the operator before booking.

Where should I stay before an early-morning flight from Faro?

Stay in Faro rather than Lagos to shorten the journey on the final morning. Move the ninth night and arrange transport to the airport before choosing a hotel. This option keeps the three main stops while making the final beach day shorter.
