Two nights in a cabin, a city to explore and a return to the same port: the IJmuiden–Newcastle and Kiel–Oslo routes make it possible to take your first sea trip without being away for a week. To choose, compare the journey to the ship, the meals and the time ashore. Here’s how to plan three days of travel, or extend your stay to five days.

Three days, two nights at sea

The ship leaves port one afternoon, arrives the next morning and departs again after the port call. You return to your departure port on the third day. This trip spans three calendar dates, with two nights on board and just one day shared between disembarking, sightseeing and reboarding. You still need to get to the terminal from home and then travel back.

This format suits travelers who want to sleep on a ship, watch the coastline and enjoy a cabin without moving their belongings every evening. If you want to spend several days in a capital, adding a night ashore makes a big difference. The choice therefore comes down first to whether you want a mainly maritime experience or a longer city visit.

The two routes covered here are round trips on cruise ferries. You can leave your vehicle ashore if you book a suitable foot-passenger package. You share the ship with travelers making a crossing, while also having access to restaurants and leisure areas. What is included depends on the package you buy; the word “cruise” alone does not tell you what meals are included.

The two crossings compared

From the Netherlands, DFDS offers a mini-cruise to Newcastle with two nights on board, a private cabin with an en-suite bathroom and round-trip transfers to the city. This option is worth considering first if IJmuiden is relatively easy for you to reach. It combines a North Sea crossing with a city walk in northern England.

From Germany, Color Line sails from Kiel to Oslo aboard the Color Fantasy or Color Magic. The company lists a usual departure at 2 p.m., arrival at 10 a.m. the next day and around four hours in port before the return journey. It offers several dining options, from cabin-only to half-board, depending on the package. Confirm these times on your booking.

The best departure point depends on your address and connections. A cheaper cabin in Kiel may not be worthwhile if it requires a long journey to the port. Conversely, extending your stay in Oslo by one or two nights may make that journey worthwhile. Compare both trips from your front door, for the same travelers, rather than looking only at the prices displayed by the companies.

Newcastle from the port of IJmuiden

The marketing label “Amsterdam–Newcastle” needs a closer look: the Dutch ferry uses IJmuiden. Staying in central Amsterdam and reaching the terminal are two separate steps. Work out the transfer you’ll need before choosing your train, hotel or departure time from home. Your ticket and boarding information should provide the details that apply to your trip.

On the first day, we’d set aside most of the time for getting to the port and settling in. Once on board, find your cabin, the restaurant where you’ll have dinner and the areas where you’d like to spend the evening. On such a short trip, booking a meal at a time that suits you is more useful than adding lots of extras. The next day should still feel enjoyable after a night in an unfamiliar setting.

In Newcastle, the façades of Grey Street and the bridges of the Quayside give your walk a clear direction. The castle and the city-centre streets make it easy to plan a visit on foot, with a lunch break. Choose one main area based on when your shuttle arrives and your return time. Calculate the time actually available after checks and the transfer, not just from the time the ship docks.

For a guided visit, Laura B.’s tour starts at Haymarket and heads down to the castle and quayside. The listed duration is two hours and fifteen minutes; the tour is offered in English or Italian. The castle is viewed from the outside, with no ticket for an interior visit. This tour can give structure to your port call if its timing leaves a comfortable margin for getting back to the shuttle. It also suits a longer stay on land. Confirm that the times work before buying.

Oslo from the port of Kiel

In Kiel, Color Line offers an overnight crossing in each direction. Arriving in Norway is part of the journey: set aside some time to watch the shoreline rather than planning the whole morning around breakfast and shopping. The indoor areas also let you enjoy the crossing without staying on deck the whole time.

The four hours listed in Oslo are the total port-call window. You need to allow for leaving the ship, traveling to your chosen area and returning before boarding closes. For a first visit, we’d recommend a short city walk and a simple lunch, with the return route already clear. A museum that matters particularly to you is a better reason to spend a night ashore.

The company presents the short option as a two-day trip; a departure one afternoon and a return the day after the next nevertheless span three calendar dates. Check this count when arranging time off. Your return time in Kiel also isn’t the same as the time you’ll get home: you still need to disembark and travel overland.

On board, the choice between an inside cabin and a sea-view cabin depends mainly on how you plan to use it. An inside cabin may suit you if you’ll sleep there and spend time in the shared areas. If you want to relax in your cabin for a long time, a window becomes a more important consideration. Check the exact berth configuration, especially if there are several of you, rather than relying on the mood-setting photo alone.

Four or five days in total

With four days available, one possible plan is to sleep near the port the night before, then spend both nights at sea. This extra day mainly allows for the journey to the port and reduces reliance on a connection on departure day. It works well for a first experience, when you want to discover the ship without rushing as soon as you arrive at the terminal.

With five days, you can consider two nights on board and two nights ashore, provided your ticket allows this arrangement. Extending your stay in Oslo requires a package with an overnight stay or two suitable crossings; Color Line also offers an option that includes a hotel. Ask for the exact terms before booking rooms separately. A mini-cruise with an immediate return does not let you freely reschedule that return.

A full day in Oslo makes it easier to fit in Itatina’s guided tour. It lasts two to two and a half hours, is in English, and has a maximum of fifteen participants. It starts in front of the Royal Palace, near the Karl Johan monument, and ends at the cathedral, passing through several areas of the city center. We recommend it during an extended stay ashore, when the meeting time and return to the ship will not divide your entire morning.

After the tour, leave part of the day free to return to the waterfront or explore a place of your choice in more depth. You will already have two long crossings in your itinerary. Adding another boat trip offers little if your priority is discovering the city; a walk and a visit to a chosen indoor attraction may make for a better-balanced stay.

From cabin to quay: the budget

To put together a comparable budget, add up transport to the port, any nights spent ashore, the cabin, meals, local transfers, tours, and onboard expenses. Calculate the total for everyone traveling. A per-person price based on two occupants in an inside cabin describes a specific arrangement; it does not automatically tell you the price for a solo departure or a trip with children.

Dining accounts for a substantial part of the price differences. With Color Line, the Classic package shown includes two breakfasts, while the half-board option adds two evening buffets and the drinks included with those meals. A cabin-only booking can be supplemented separately. Compare what is actually shown for your dates, including the drinks you want, before deciding that one package costs less.

With DFDS, check the total price of the mini-cruise, the meals selected, and the included transfers. A basic crossing and a package with a city excursion do not necessarily include the same things. Supplements, cabin categories, and change conditions can affect the final total. Keep the detailed booking summary before paying rather than just a screenshot of the advertised starting price.

To keep costs under control, we would prioritize a suitable cabin, the meals you actually want, and just one paid tour ashore. Prices and ratings for the selected tours appear on their cards; availability depends on the date you choose. The ferry, meals, and hotel are booked separately from these city tours. None of the activity cards serves as a ticket for the crossing.

The season and onboard comfort

From May to September, we would be more inclined to choose these itineraries if walks and time outdoors are a priority. This is a planning preference, not a promise of good weather. A North Sea crossing remains a sea journey even during the summer holidays; a warm layer and rainproof clothing are still useful.

In autumn and winter, plan a more focused stopover and an indoor option that suits your interests. You may prefer to spend more time at the restaurant, in the lounge, or at the shows, depending on what is offered on board. The daily crossings advertised by the operators describe the usual service; always check the schedule for your date and travel updates before setting out.

If you are prone to seasickness, two nights at sea are already a significant commitment. Ask a healthcare professional for advice on suitable prevention, then check with the company about available cabins. Keep your medication and essentials within easy reach. Sea conditions cannot be inferred from either the size of the ship or the price paid.

Travel documents and connectivity

For a stopover in the United Kingdom, check the requirements for your nationality and personal circumstances. French travelers making an ordinary tourist visit should bring a passport and an ETA where required. Apply through the official UK service; each child who needs one must also have their own authorization. A short stopover does not exempt you from preparing for entry into the country.

For Oslo, check with the authorities and Color Line which documents are accepted at embarkation and at your destination. The company recommends a passport and specifies age requirements for the short package, including a minimum age of 20. A group of young adults or a family traveling with minors should therefore check their circumstances before paying. Also report any assistance needs or accessible-cabin requirements when booking.

For your phone, roaming on a land-based network in the European Union and European Economic Area follows the rules of your plan. Satellite systems used at sea are subject to different rates and are not covered by those limits. Turn on airplane mode while sailing if you want to avoid connecting unintentionally, then use the ship’s Wi-Fi subject to its terms. A land-based eSIM is not a substitute for a maritime plan.

Choosing the right trip for you

We would first consider Newcastle if IJmuiden is the port that is easiest for you to reach and you want to spend your stopover walking between shopping streets and quays. The local transfer included in the package makes planning easier. Book a guided tour afterward, but only if its departure time fits your window ashore.

We would favor Kiel–Oslo for a trip where the crossing and life on board are a major part of the experience, or for an extended stay in the Norwegian capital. With only four hours ashore advertised, keep your city itinerary short. With one or two extra nights there, it is much easier to fit in the guided tour and cultural attractions.

In either case, a good booking starts with the journey to the terminal and counting the nights. Once those details are settled, choosing a cabin, meal plan, and tour becomes easier. You will know how much of your time off will actually be spent at sea, in the city, and traveling to and from the port.

FAQ

How many nights are included in a three-day mini-cruise?

Both round trips described include two nights on board. The first day is for boarding, the second for the stopover and departure on the return leg, and the third for returning to the port of origin. Getting to the port from home may require an extra night. So count the dates and overnight stays before booking time off.

Can you visit Oslo during the four-hour stopover?

A short walk is possible if you allow time for disembarkation, getting around, and returning before boarding closes. For the two-to-two-and-a-half-hour guided tour recommended here, we favor an extended stay ashore. That way, you can book a proper time slot without depending on a tight port window.

Does the DFDS mini-cruise depart from central Amsterdam?

The ferry uses IJmuiden. You need to arrange access to the terminal separately from any visit to Amsterdam. Check the exact departure point for any transfers you book: getting to the port and taking the stopover shuttle in Newcastle meet two different needs.

Are all meals included in the price?

What is included varies by package. Color Line offers, among other options, cabin-only bookings, packages with breakfast, and half-board packages. With DFDS, check which meals have been added to the mini-cruise you selected. Having access to a restaurant on board does not mean the meal is paid for; rely on the booking summary.

Do you need an ETA for a brief stopover in Newcastle?

UK entry requirements depend on your nationality and status, even for a short visit. French travelers making an ordinary tourist visit should check the passport and ETA requirements on GOV.UK before booking. Children who need authorization must have their own. Use the official website to avoid intermediaries charging an extra fee for the application.

Is a mini-cruise suitable for a family?

It may be suitable if the sleeping arrangements, meals, and pace are appropriate for the children’s ages. Check the age requirements for the package, the available cabins, and each participant’s documents. Plan a short stop with breaks, rather than a guided tour imposed on the whole family after a first night at sea.

Can you keep your mobile plan during the crossing?

Depending on its terms, your plan may cover terrestrial networks in the countries you visit, including Norway within the EEA. The ship’s satellite connection is charged separately. Airplane mode, followed by deliberate use of the onboard Wi-Fi, helps you keep this expense under control. Check separately whether your subscription covers the United Kingdom.

Can you freely turn a three-day trip into a five-day one?

You need to book a ticket or package that allows you to extend your trip. Adding two hotel nights at your destination while keeping a return crossing scheduled for the day of your stopover creates a conflict. Have both the outbound and return crossings confirmed before paying for accommodation; a night before boarding can also make the trip four days long without changing the ferry tickets.
