Six hours between flights may leave time for a walk, a meal in the city, or a guided tour. It all depends on clearing immigration, travel time, and when you need to be back. Here’s how to work out whether you can go out, with an example in Singapore and a short route in Amsterdam.
The time actually available
On your booking, the layover starts at the scheduled arrival of your first flight and ends at the departure of the next. Getting off the plane, walking through the terminal, clearing checks, and returning to your departure gate all take up part of that time. So the useful calculation starts with when you need to be back in the terminal, according to your airline’s instructions and the formalities for your itinerary.
Consider this planning scenario: a six-hour connection, 45 minutes to leave the airport, 45 minutes of travel each way, and two hours set aside at the terminal before departure. That leaves one hour and 45 minutes in the city. These are assumptions to adjust for queues, baggage, and your flight; two hours is not a universally sufficient recommendation for every airport.
With this much time, a walk near the station and a simple lunch make sense. A timed museum visit followed by crossing the city calls for more flexibility. If the plane arrives late, recalculate before leaving the transit area. Set a turnaround time on your phone and save the return route for offline use.
Entry and baggage
Crossing the border to visit means meeting the country’s entry requirements, even for just a few hours. Your nationality, any residence permit you hold, and your full itinerary all matter. For a connection in the Netherlands, NetherlandsWorldwide offers a check tailored to the traveler’s situation. Permission to remain in the international transit area does not automatically mean you are allowed to visit Amsterdam.
In Singapore, the ICA requires visitors entering the country to submit an SG Arrival Card free of charge within the three days including the arrival date. This declaration does not replace a visa if one is required. Travelers who remain in transit without clearing immigration are exempt. Use the official service rather than an intermediary that charges a fee.
Also check where your checked baggage will be sent. Collecting and rechecking a suitcase adds timing and transport constraints. Two separate tickets may require different arrangements from a connection booked through to your destination. Keep your passport, boarding pass, medication, and payment method in your small bag. If you need to use luggage storage, include drop-off and pickup in your time budget.
Singapore with a guided tour
At Changi, the Free Singapore Tour offers a clearly defined framework: a connection of 5 h 30 min to 24 hours, a 2 h 30 min tour, and flight times compatible with the selected session. Meeting the minimum connection time alone is therefore not enough to decide. The airport’s table lists, for each departure, the latest check-in time and the earliest departure time of the next flight.
For example, the midday City Sights Tour ends at 14:30; you must check in before 10:30, and your onward flight must depart after 16:30. If your scheduled arrival is 10:30, you would already miss the check-in time, even with a six-hour connection. If you arrive earlier, compare all three times with your ticket.
The tour counters are in the transit area of terminals 2 and 3, so stay on the transit side of immigration to register. Changi allows advance booking, subject to availability, and asks travelers to arrive at least 90 minutes before the tour. You must have your passport, boarding passes, and any required entry documents available; checked baggage must be tagged through to your final destination.
Commentary is in English. Choose the itinerary based on what you want to see, such as the cityscapes on the City Sights Tour or the river area on the Singapore River and Marina Bay Sands Tour. Stops are brief; the name of a district does not mean the tour includes an indoor visit. The official program also states that these tours are not suitable for wheelchair or stroller users.
Amsterdam around Centraal
Amsterdam works well for an independent outing centered on a single station. The tourism office gives the train journey between Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal as approximately 17 minutes, with the airport station located beneath the terminal. Check the actual journey in the NS planner on the day: train waiting time, engineering works, getting off the platform, and walking all add to the rail travel time.
From Centraal, head to Damrak to see the narrow buildings along the water. If time allows, continue to the streets near Dam Square, then return to the same area rather than crossing the whole city center. Allow around one to one and a half hours for this loop and a short break; this estimate varies with your pace and how busy it is. You can shorten the plan at any time without losing a ticket or missing an appointment.
For a meal, choose somewhere along this route rather than a restaurant far away that you picked out before your trip. Ask how long service will take if your buffer is short. The station is your reference point for the return; make sure you can get to Schiphol without relying on a single payment method. If a rail disruption is announced, reassess the outing before heading into the city center.
A cruise during your layover
With a longer layover, a booked activity becomes feasible. For the private cruise offered here, we recommend a layover of at least eight hours. This is a planning recommendation that should be adjusted for your flight and formalities. You need enough time to absorb an arrival delay, reach the boarding point, and return to Schiphol after the activity with the buffer required by your airline.
The private cruise with captain lasts 90 minutes and departs near Koepelkerk, in the Centraal area, returning to the same point. Commentary is available in English or Dutch; drinks and snacks are included. This option suits a group that wants to see the canals while seated, with a clearly identified departure point, rather than adding several trips around the city.
Choose a time slot that ends early enough, and confirm the meeting point shown on your voucher. The transfer from Schiphol must be arranged separately. The price and reviews are grouped on the offer card; the final amount depends on the booking you choose. A self-guided walk is preferable if your arrival time leaves too much uncertainty to make the boat departure.

Hong Kong is a reminder of why transport speed and time outside the airport must be considered separately: MTR states that the Airport Express takes at least 24 minutes between the airport and the city. This figure includes neither immigration nor the walk to the station or the trip from the arrival station to your walking route. Use the same full calculation before adding an activity; check your entry eligibility separately.
A long layover can also be used to sleep. Emirates offers Dubai Connect on certain eligible bookings, particularly when the itinerary does not allow a shorter connection. The service may include a hotel, transfers, and applicable meals. Check eligibility in your booking before departure: having several hours in Dubai does not automatically qualify you for the service.
In Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum or the Museumplein area can be a separate option if your layover is substantially longer. If so, recalculate access, the admission time slot, and the return from that area. For a short first outing, the Centraal area avoids this extra planning. The Museumplein photograph accompanying this guide is an archive image: the former “I amsterdam” installation shown in it is not a current meeting point.
FAQ
Can you leave the airport during a six-hour layover?
Yes, if you meet the entry requirements and the schedule allows you to return as required. Six hours shown on your ticket may leave only a short window in the city. Consider the terminal, border control, baggage, and travel time before choosing a walking destination. An arrival delay may make your original plan to go out impossible.
How long before the flight should you return?
Follow your airline’s instructions for your flight, then account for known terminal constraints and your own circumstances. The gate-closing time is not the time to arrive at the airport. The two hours used in our example are for illustrative calculation; some itineraries or assistance needs require more time.
Can you take the Free Singapore Tour during a six-hour layover?
Only if your arrival flight gets you to the counter before the cut-off time and your next departure meets the tour schedule. Changi states an eligibility window of 5 h 30 min to 24 hours, but also requires you to check in 90 minutes before the tour. Availability and entry requirements must also be met.
Do you need to collect your suitcase to visit the city?
Check your baggage tag and your airline’s connection arrangements. A checked bag tagged through to your final destination may continue without you taking it into the city. If you need to collect and recheck it, those time requirements and opening hours become part of your plan. The Free Singapore Tour requires checked baggage to be routed through to the final destination.
Which visit should you choose during a layover in Amsterdam?
For a short window, Damrak and the streets near Centraal allow for a flexible outing, provided trains are running normally. With more time, a 90-minute cruise near Koepelkerk offers a time-bounded activity. Check the exact departure point before booking, and treat a museum visit as a separate plan with its own transfers.
Is it worth going out during an overnight layover?
It depends on actual transport schedules, what remains open, and how much rest you need before your next flight. A fast connection advertised for daytime does not guarantee the same arrangements at night. First check both the outbound and return trips at the relevant hours; if most of your time would be spent travelling, staying at the airport or using suitable accommodation may be more comfortable.
