Two nights in the capital, two in Berat, four by the sea and one final night near Tirana: this arrangement lets you discover Albania without repacking every morning. Here’s how to plan this first trip, choose your Ionian stop and adapt the route to transport options and the season.
The trip’s nine nights
On a map, the beaches in the south seem close enough to Tirana to add easily to a few city visits. In practice, changing accommodation, making connections and traveling along coastal roads take up real half-days. For ten days with arrival and departure in Tirana, we recommend focusing the trip on three stops: the capital, Berat and Himara. The final night is spent back near the airport, separating the long journey from the flight.
The proposed schedule includes nine nights: the first two in Tirana, the third and fourth in Berat, the next four in Himara or nearby, and then one near Tirana. Transfer days are deliberately kept light. A stroll after arrival or dinner is enough; save the main sightseeing for the next day. This pace leaves a spare day in case the weather disrupts a coastal outing.
With one week, remove a stop rather than cramming all three in. Tirana and Berat work well for a cultural trip; Tirana and a seaside base are better suited to a beach-focused visit. With twelve to fourteen days, Saranda and Butrint can become a proper additional stop. Adding two nights there lets you keep time for sightseeing and the breaks that make a trip enjoyable.
This route focuses on the center and south of the country. The Albanian Alps require different planning, with specific journeys, accommodation and hiking conditions. They fit better into a second trip or a stay devoted to the north.
The season and the Tirana alert
To combine city walks with the Ionian coast, May–June and September are our first choices when planning. Heat may already call for breaks in Berat; wind and sea conditions determine whether water activities are possible. In July and August, compare accommodations and their access to the beach well in advance, then schedule uphill sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day. October is still appealing for landscapes and cities, with a more flexible seaside itinerary.
In November, focus the trip on Tirana and Berat, and consider the coast as a place for walks. Confirm that accommodation, restaurants and the transport you need are open before booking several nights in a small resort. A beach photographed in summer tells you nothing about the services available on your travel dates. Plan alternative visits in case the weather changes.
A current update also affects how you prepare for the capital: in an alert updated on October 23, 2026, France Diplomatie advises avoiding certain areas of Tirana following demonstrations and violence, including the vicinity of Skanderbeg Square, the Ministry of Education and Durrës Road, as well as gatherings near official buildings. Check this alert before departure and during your stay. The city locations described below remain reference points for a route permitted by current conditions; avoid the affected areas as long as the advisory remains in effect.
Arriving from the airport
Tirana International Airport offers two separate connections that should be clearly distinguished. The LU-NA bus to the city centre drops passengers behind the Palace of Congresses and Opera and Ballet. The airport website advertises a continuous service, with departures every hour on the hour, an indicative journey time of thirty to forty minutes, and a fare of 400 lek. Traffic can lengthen the journey. Confirm that the service is operating and check the stop if restrictions in the city centre change.
Another line goes to the north and south bus terminal. It is mainly useful for travellers continuing to another city. Its schedule is more limited than that of the city-centre connection: check the timetable published by the airport for your arrival. A ticket to Tirana therefore does not tell you whether you will arrive near your hotel or near an intercity connection.
For your first night, choose accommodation with clearly described access and a reception desk that can accommodate your actual arrival time. Send your flight number and ask how to reach the entrance from the stop. A central address may require several minutes of walking with your luggage; an upstairs apartment may mean additional stairs.
If you are renting a car, consider picking it up when you leave Tirana rather than as soon as you land. You will avoid paying for days when it remains parked. Still, compare the cost and opening hours of both pickup options: a late arrival or a very early departure may make the airport more convenient.
Two days in the capital
Tirana offers a way to explore the country’s recent history while settling into the pace of your trip. When safety conditions allow, the Skanderbeg area brings together several urban landmarks, including the Et’hem Bey Mosque and the Clock Tower. The façades and public spaces offer a first impression of the capital. Check interior access and opening hours separately; do not build your whole day around an entrance you assume will be open.
The Pyramid and the area around Tirana Castle offer other possible stops. Plan a walk by area rather than making a list of scattered monuments. You could keep the first half-day focused on a few streets and a long break, then use the next day for an indoor visit that is actually open. The Blloku district can round out the programme with cafés and dinner, depending on local recommendations that day.
For sites connected with the communist period, choose the visit that interests you and check its operating status with the site manager. Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2 are separate sites: note the full name and address before planning your journey. Their inclusion in an old travel itinerary does not prove that every space will be open on your travel dates.
Leave some flexibility in these two days, especially after a late arrival. Your first stay is also a chance to withdraw lek, organise your onward travel and confirm appointments. A schedule that fills every hour from the moment you land leaves little room for a closure, an alert or a transport change.
Berat, between river and citadel
Two nights in Berat give you time to explore the lower neighbourhoods and the citadel at different times. Mangalem and Gorica face each other across the Osum. From the riverbanks, you can take in the layout of the houses and hillsides before heading into the narrow streets. Gorica Bridge provides a natural crossing between the two areas; include it in a walk rather than treating it as an isolated stop.
Spend your first late afternoon in the lower neighbourhoods, depending on your arrival time. The following day, set aside time for the climb to the castle and its inhabited quarter. The slope and cobblestones affect how strenuous the climb is: sturdy shoes, water and breaks matter more than the distance shown on your phone. In hot weather, a morning visit makes the day more comfortable.
The Onufri Museum can extend your cultural visit if it is open that day. Check the hours and ticket with the venue or your guide, particularly outside the high season. Church interiors and private spaces are not public streets. In the inhabited castle quarter, respect doorways, terraces and residents’ daily lives.
A local guided visit can offer useful insight into the buildings and the city’s layout. We recommend the cultural walk by 1001 Albanian Adventures, starting in Berat. Depending on the option, the advertised duration ranges from one to three hours. The listing includes a French-language guide option, which you can select along with your departure time. Entry to the castle and museum is paid separately. The meeting point listed is the operator’s office, opposite Hotel Mangalemi; follow the details in your booking.
This option suits travellers already spending the night in Berat: transport from Tirana must be arranged separately. After the walk, leave time to return to a neighbourhood, have lunch or visit the museum of your choice. You will get more out of Berat by leaving part of the afternoon open than by immediately setting off on a long coastal drive.

View activityHimara, Dhërmi or Saranda
For four nights by the sea, Himara is a practical base for this first trip. It lets you combine the seafront, nearby beaches, the old fortified quarter and trips to Porto Palermo or Qeparo. The advantage is having a fixed place to return to: your beach gear stays in your room, and you can choose each day’s plans according to the weather.
Dhërmi is a better fit for travellers who want to focus their stay on its beaches and surroundings. Check the accommodation’s exact location: the village name may refer to an address uphill, while you plan to spend the day down by the sea. The elevation change, walking access and parking may matter more than a few kilometres between towns. Ask for clear directions before choosing.
Saranda is better suited to an itinerary centred on Butrint and Ksamil. It offers a different, more urban setup, with a seafront promenade and excursions in the south. Choose it instead of Himara if Butrint’s archaeology is your priority. With ten days, keeping both coastal bases reduces the time available at each and adds another check-in.
You can narrow down the choice by picturing your ideal day: several beaches and villages around Himara, a well-located beach stay near Dhërmi, or a southern base for Butrint and Ksamil in Saranda. Then check whether you can have dinner without driving, how steep the route is between your room and the shore, and whether there is parking if you are driving. A balcony photo does not answer these questions.
Four days on the Ionian coast
After the drive from Berat, leave your first evening for settling in. The next day can stay close to your accommodation, with an accessible beach and a walk around Himara. Livadhi is another option nearby; choose how to get there based on your accommodation and local conditions. At each beach, identify accessible areas and paid services before settling in.
A day trip to Porto Palermo and Qeparo leaves more room for scenery and heritage. Porto Palermo Fortress and the coastal villages let you alternate short visits with breaks. Road conditions and parking should be your first considerations when stopping: a viewpoint is not a reason to pull over on a bend. Adjust your visits to opening hours that have actually been confirmed.
Keep the fourth day free for the sea, another beach or a walk. If you want to take a boat trip, check the departure point, return arrangements, equipment, cancellation policy and sea conditions. For a cove accessible by boat, you also need to know how you will leave it. For a family trip, choose arrangements that suit everyone’s comfort in the water and exposure to the sun.
Butrint deserves a day planned from the south. The National Tourism Agency describes it as an archaeological and natural site near Saranda. Staying in the south avoids adding a long excursion on top of several days of driving. If you replace Himara with Saranda, schedule the site visit and a beach day in Ksamil separately so you can spend as much time as you want at each.

The route without a car
Tirana and Berat are manageable without renting a car, provided you check departure times, terminals and the final connection to your accommodation. The airport directs travelers to the eTransport platform to plan domestic routes. Look up each journey for your travel date and save the directions for offline use. Also ask your accommodation whether the advertised stop is still the one currently used for arrivals.
The coast requires more careful planning. Choose a room close to amenities and limit outings to places that are genuinely accessible. An intercity trip to a resort does not guarantee a convenient connection to a distant beach. Before booking, plan a complete day: arrival, walking with your luggage, dinner, then departure the next day. If any part of the trip depends on a taxi, ask for a price and a precise meeting point.
For a short stay based in Tirana, a day trip to Berat and Lake Belshi is another option. The selected tour lasts nine to ten hours and includes transport and castle admission. The Onufri Museum is optional, and meals are separate. The guide speaks English; some tours departing from Tirana offer Italian, while French is provided as a digital booklet.
This day trip replaces the nights in Berat in the shorter version of the itinerary. If you have already booked the local walking tour and two nights there, keep your independent plan. For the trip from Tirana, the operator sends its final pickup instructions the previous evening and uses WhatsApp: having an internet connection and a reachable phone number makes departure easier.

View activityAccommodation and budget
To compare two trip plans, calculate the costs separately for the nine nights, transport between stops, local travel, meals, admission fees and activities. Add parking, fuel and insurance if you are driving. Accommodation that is cheaper but far from all amenities can increase costs and make evenings less convenient. Compare the total cost of the trip for the same number of travelers and the same period.
In Berat, check the slope, stairs and whether you can drop off your luggage before parking. On the coast, ask whether getting to the beach involves a road or a climb on the way back. If you are traveling with a child in a stroller or someone with reduced mobility, ask for photos of the entrance and routes through the property. “Central” describes neither the terrain nor the steps.
The lek is the national currency. Keep an appropriate amount on hand for small expenses and ask which payment methods are accepted. When a business lists a price in euros, confirm the settlement currency and how the amount is calculated. The exchange rate and your bank fees are part of the budget; an old price converted in a guide is not a current rate.
Prices and reviews for the selected activities are shown on their listings and should be checked for your chosen date. For car rental, use a professional agency and read the terms for the deposit, excess, fuel and roadside assistance. France Diplomatie recommends caution on the roads and advises driving during daylight. Plan to return to Tirana the day before your flight, then choose your final night based on your departure time.
Connectivity and travel documents
A mobile connection is mainly useful for meeting points, transport changes and messaging accommodation providers. First check whether your plan covers Albania and what data allowance it includes. If not, the selected Airalo plan offers ten gigabytes of data for fifteen days, subject to having an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone. Install it while you have a stable connection and read its activation terms. Offline maps are still useful in areas with weaker coverage.
For French travelers, France Diplomatie states that no visa is required for a short stay of up to ninety days. Your passport or national identity card must remain valid for three months after your planned return. France’s administrative extension of certain older identity cards is not recognized: check the printed expiry date. A document reported lost or stolen can no longer be used, even if it is later found.
Check that your insurance covers medical expenses and repatriation, as well as your planned activities. Bring any necessary medication and prescriptions, protect yourself from the heat, and use water known to be safe to drink. The emergency number listed for Albania is 112. For a remote walk, share your plans with your accommodation and adjust your departure to the forecast.

FAQ
Is ten days enough to visit Tirana, Berat and the Riviera?
Yes, with just one coastal base and a return to Tirana the day before your flight. Two nights in the capital, two in Berat, four on the coast and a final night near Tirana make for a straightforward pace. Keep arrival and transfer days light. To add Saranda and Butrint without shortening the other stops, allow several extra days.
Can you make this trip without renting a car?
Yes, if you check intercity connections and choose accommodation near stops and amenities. Short outings along the coast require more advance planning than visits to Tirana or Berat. Limit beach changes, ask about local transport options and check the return journey too. For a shorter stay, an organized day trip to Berat can make logistics easier from Tirana.
Himara or Saranda for a first visit?
Himara works well for several days of beaches and villages along the Riviera. Saranda is a better fit for an itinerary focused on Butrint and Ksamil. Choose based on where you plan to spend your days, then check the practical access to your accommodation. With ten days, choosing just one of these bases avoids spending too much time checking in and traveling.
Is Albania suitable for a November trip?
Tirana and Berat can form the cultural heart of the trip, subject to safety advice and opening hours. Plan the coast around individually confirmed services and have a backup activity in case of bad weather. Do not build the trip around swimming or boat trips. Fewer stops make it easier to adapt each day.
Are both Berat tours available in French?
The local walk with 1001 Albanian Adventures lists French as a guide-language option; select French explicitly and choose the corresponding departure. For the day trip from Tirana or Durrës, French is offered as a digital booklet, with spoken guidance in English and Italian depending on the option. The two tours also have different departure points: Berat for the first, and the pickup city for the second.
Is a French identity card sufficient?
It allows the short stay described by France Diplomatie if it meets the validity requirements: valid for three months after your planned return, with an unexpired printed date. If an older card has only been extended administratively, review your documents before departure. For a minor, also check the documents required for their specific circumstances and accompanying adult. These rules apply to French nationals.
Should you pay in euros or lek?
The lek is the national currency. Ask which currency the price is quoted in and which currency you will pay in before making a payment, especially when an offer is listed in euros. Keep enough cash for small expenses and check your card’s withdrawal and payment fees. Online activities may use a different currency: the one displayed when you book is the applicable one.
Where should you stay before a flight departing from Tirana?
Return to the Tirana area the day before, then choose between the city and the airport based on your flight time. For an early departure, accommodation near the airport can reduce travel, provided you confirm its shuttle or taxi arrangements. For a later departure, staying in the city is still an option if you allow extra time for traffic. Avoid relying on a long journey from the Riviera on the same day as your flight.
