The Cliffs of Moher can also be visited from Galway during the colder season, with land-based excursions that allow between one and a half and two hours at the site. For winter 2026–2027, we recommend a coastal tour with two hours at the cliffs; an express transfer is better if you want to get back to Galway sooner. The Burren, Poulnabrone Dolmen and Aillwee Cave offer three more reasons to extend the day. Here are five options to compare, taking seasonal cruises and coastal path closures into account.
The cliffs during the colder season
O’Brien’s Tower overlooks an Atlantic-facing coast in County Clare. From Galway, the journey skirts the bay before reaching the Burren hills and the cliffs. An excursion’s appeal therefore depends as much on the journey as on the final viewpoint: some options follow more of the coastline, while others stop at a prehistoric monument or offer a visit to a cave. The five activities featured here depart from Galway and return to the city.
For a stay between November 2026 and February 2027, we would favour land travel and a visit to the permitted areas around the visitor centre. Short days concentrate outdoor walks into a limited window; additional stops should fit the amount of time you want to spend outside. The centre and its developed viewpoints make it possible to plan a relatively short visit without setting out on a hike lasting several hours.
The operators sell the options below for periods that cover winter, with exceptions depending on the product and dates. Choose your day in the booking calendar, then check which departure is actually offered. An excursion listed in the catalogue may depend on a minimum number of participants or be cancelled in extreme weather. If you are staying for several nights, scheduling Moher before your final day leaves more opportunities to reschedule.
For a first visit, we favour the coastal trip with two hours at the cliffs. That leaves time to explore the open viewpoints and take a break at the centre, while also showing you part of the Burren. For travellers already familiar with the area or mainly interested in the cliffs, the express transfer makes for a more focused round trip. Those interested in prehistory should look first at the tour that stops at Poulnabrone.
Five options from Galway
The first criterion is how long you spend at the cliffs, followed by the stops actually visited and the admissions included. An eight-hour day includes travel, breaks and stops; the driver’s commentary takes place mainly during the journey. You generally explore the site at your own pace, within the time set for returning to the vehicle.
- Express transfer: about five hours fifteen minutes in total, including two hours at the cliffs; self-guided visit and visitor centre admission included.
- Coastal tour: eight hours, including two hours at the cliffs; English-speaking driver-guide, admission included and a break in Doolin.
- Burren and Poulnabrone: eight hours fifteen minutes, including one and a half hours at the cliffs; stop at the dolmen, English-speaking guide and admission included.
- Tour with Aillwee: eight hours, including one and a half hours at the cliffs; English-speaking guide, admission to the cliffs included, cave admission extra.
- Private vehicle: advertised as five to six hours, including one and a half hours at the cliffs; up to four people, English-speaking guide and pickup to be arranged.
Plan for meals separately. The prices and ratings shown on the cards correspond to the exact products; when comparing the cost of your trip, also consider optional admissions and the actual number of travellers. The private tour is offered at a group rate, while group tours are booked according to participant numbers.
The express transfer to Moher
The Lally transfer is the most straightforward option in this selection. Its stated duration is five hours and fifteen minutes, with two hours on site. The vehicle takes you from Galway to the site, then brings you back after your visit. Admission to the visitor centre is included; you can divide your time as you wish between the accessible viewpoints, the exhibition and a possible break.
This arrangement seems suited to those who mainly want to see the cliffs, without adding several stops in the Burren. On site, you can start with the permitted section offering the best views, then return to the building. Two hours gives you room to adjust your walk to the wind and your comfort. You still need to be back at the stated time: the driver sets a shared return meeting time.
Departure is from outside the HYDE Hotel, Forster Street. The general listing mentions several times, but the calendar consulted for this product shows a noon departure. In winter, rely only on the time offered for your date, rather than planning your stay around an assumed morning departure. A noon departure takes up much of the afternoon; the total duration includes the return journey.
This experience does not include a tour guide. Choose this trip for round-trip transport, admission and free time, using your own points of reference for the visit. Meals and hotel pickup are separate. For a very young child, the listing requires a car seat for children under two and specifies that the company does not provide one: arrange this before purchase and departure.

View activityThe Burren coast and Doolin
The eight-hour Wild Atlantic Way tour combines the cliffs with a broader look at the coast. The driver-guide provides commentary in English on the landscapes along the way. The itinerary includes a photo stop at Dunguaire, near Kinvara, followed by a route through the Burren and a break in Doolin. Two hours are set aside for the cliffs, with visitor-centre admission included.
We would choose this option for a first day out of Galway, when the journey through the region matters as much as reaching the viewpoint. The bay, villages and rocky landscapes give the journey a sense of continuity. The stop in Doolin also lets you separate lunch from your visit to the cliffs: there is a scheduled break, with the meal at your own expense.
Dunguaire is presented here as an outdoor stop to photograph the tower house and its surroundings. No interior castle visit is listed in this selection. Along the coast, stops may depend on conditions and traffic; the driver organises the day and tells you how long you can spend ashore. Keep a waterproof layer handy in the vehicle so you can enjoy a short stop without unpacking your bag.
The listing describes the possibility of a cruise during the summer months, for an additional fee. For the winter itinerary, we would focus on the land-based visit and the two hours at the cliffs. Doolin Pier remains exposed to the ocean; passing near the pier does not mean a boat will depart that day.
The stated meeting point is outside Kinlay Hostel, Merchants Road, with a departure listed at 9:30 a.m. and arrival requested ten to fifteen minutes beforehand. Use the instructions in your confirmation to identify the vehicle. This shared tour does not include general pickup from Galway accommodation.

View activityPoulnabrone and the limestone landscape
The eight-hour-and-fifteen-minute tour that stops at Poulnabrone will appeal most to travellers who want to add a prehistoric site to their visit to Moher. The itinerary lists about twenty minutes at the dolmen, an outdoor stop at Dunguaire, a break in Doolin and an hour and a half at the cliffs. Transport, English commentary and admission to the Moher site are included.
Poulnabrone stands on the Burren’s limestone plateau. Its large capstone rests on upright stones in a landscape of exposed rock, whose fissures and surfaces are themselves worth observing. The geopark lists it among its discovery sites. This detour gives you a clearly defined stop in a region that other tours mainly pass through from the vehicle windows.
Twenty minutes is enough for a discovery stop: time to look at the monument, its setting and the information available on site. Follow the paths and respect the protected areas around the stones. On damp natural ground, good soles are more useful than shoes chosen for a single urban walk. The dolmen visit fits into the day without becoming a hike through the Burren.
This option allows thirty minutes less at the cliffs than the previous two trips. We would choose it if Poulnabrone is one of the places you genuinely want to see. An hour and a half at Moher is enough to explore the nearby viewpoints and return to the centre; you simply need to prioritise what you want to do on site, especially if you also want lunch or time to see the exhibition.
The stated meeting point is on Merchants Road, near Kinlay Hostel. The instructions request check-in before 9:40–9:45 a.m.; keep the voucher you received handy for the address and time that apply to your booking. Lunch and drinks are not included. According to the information consulted, vehicle seats are not assigned.

View activityAillwee and the cliffs
The eight-hour Lally excursion introduces another dimension of the Burren: the movement of water inside the limestone. The geopark explains that Aillwee Cave formed as water flowed through fractures in the hill. After exploring the surface landscapes, this stop offers a chance to experience the terrain through its underground spaces, provided the cave is open and the visit is available on your date.
The itinerary includes a stop at Aillwee, but admission is at an additional cost. At the Cliffs of Moher, by contrast, the itinerary lists admission as included and allows an hour and a half for the visit. This difference is worth checking before comparing prices: the cave’s name in the tour title describes a stop, but does not automatically mean that its ticket is included.
The itinerary also includes an outdoor photo stop at Dunguaire, a drive through the Burren and a break in Doolin for lunch at your own expense. The castle is an outdoor stop focused on the landscape and exterior architecture. With Aillwee, this day trip suits travellers who want to explore geology and vary the types of visits, rather than focusing exclusively on the coast.
Commentary is in English. The stated meeting point is outside the HYDE Hotel, Forster Street, at 9:15 a.m. for the listed departure. You can ask the operator about hotel pickup at least twenty-four hours in advance; return to your accommodation is not included. Confirm that your pickup point can be accommodated before relying on this service.
The listing asks families to provide any child seat needed for children under five themselves. For the cave, also check the access conditions for your mobility needs. An activity that includes an indoor space still involves travel and outdoor stops; in extreme conditions, the operator may cancel the entire trip. We would choose this option for its geological interest, after confirming the itinerary before booking.

View activityThe private vehicle for up to four
The five-to-six-hour private tour departing from Galway reserves the vehicle for your group, with a maximum of four people. It includes an English-speaking guide, pickup to be arranged, and one and a half hours at the Cliffs, with admission included as stated in the itinerary. The program offers possible stops in Doolin, Dunguaire and the Burren, as well as options involving a chocolate factory or a perfumery.
The main advantage is being able to tailor the day with the driver: the meeting point, lunch break and stops that genuinely interest your group. Before booking, share a clear priority, such as the Cliffs and a coastal stop. The five-to-six-hour duration allows for a condensed itinerary; discuss the list of possible visits to put together a coherent schedule that accounts for driving times.
We would choose this option for a small group that wants to leave from its accommodation or adjust its breaks. It can also make planning easier with a child: the listing says a baby seat is available on request at no extra charge. Tell the operator the child’s age and specific needs, then ask them to confirm the seat and the vehicle’s capacity for passengers and luggage.
The calendar we checked shows a break from December 23, 2026, through January 17, 2027, inclusive. This product is therefore not an option throughout the entire holiday period. Outside those dates, the selected day and pickup still need to be confirmed. Meals and tips are not included; any purchases at a shop are at your own expense.
Assess the price based on the permitted group size, rather than multiplying the displayed rate by four. Compare your booking total with the group tickets for the same ages, then consider the difference in service: pickup, private arrangements and choice of breaks. This comparison is more useful than a ranking based solely on the lowest price shown.

View activityCruises and the Aran Islands
Ferry crossings to the islands and cruises beneath the Cliffs have their own operating seasons. Aran Island Ferries lists its departures from Galway City as operating from March 26 to October 3, 2027. This sea trip connects Inis Mór and the Cliffs from the city quays during the period shown. It is therefore not among our recommendations for December, January or February.
The operator distinguishes these departures from its year-round crossings from Connemara. The departure port, the overland journey to the embarkation point and the destination should be considered separately. A ferry to an island is not automatically a cruise to the Cliffs of Moher; plan a separate island day if that is your goal.
From Doolin, the cruise calendar we checked lists departures through November 1, 2026, then resumes on February 27, 2027. For the heart of winter, we would therefore plan the day around views of the Cliffs from above and stops on land. From the advertised resumption date onward, check the day’s schedule, the weather and the connection from Galway before combining a boat trip with an excursion.
The five products presented here are land-based services. They let you choose an itinerary without making the main sightseeing experience dependent on a sea crossing. A separately booked cruise needs to fit the coach schedule; only an itinerary that explicitly includes it can ensure that coordination.
Public bus and car
Bus Éireann confirms route 350 between Galway and Ennis via the Cliffs of Moher. This service is an option for independent travel. Before choosing it, check the outbound and return journeys for your specific day, the stop in Galway and the one at the Cliffs’ visitor centre. The last return departure determines how much time you have on site; in winter, check this before deciding on any walks.
The public bus is best suited to visitors who want to explore independently and can plan their day around a timetable. Check the transport ticket and site admission separately. Since detailed timetables and fares for your date are not established here, we cannot give this option a specific budget or fixed duration. Bring a way to access your bookings and schedules, even if your mobile connection is unreliable.
An express transfer simplifies the round trip and includes the advertised admission. A tour adds commentary and stops that the regular bus does not turn into sightseeing visits. To compare the options, start with the experience you want: a long, independent visit to the Cliffs, a tour of several places in the Burren, or an organized day without connections to keep track of.
With a car, you choose your stops and departure time, and take responsibility for driving and parking. If it is your first time driving local roads in the colder season, a chauffeur lets everyone enjoy the scenery. Having your own vehicle is still a good option for a longer stay in County Clare, when Moher is part of a multi-day itinerary.
Trails and weather
The coastal trail requires separate consideration from access to the visitor centre. Sport Ireland lists a closure notice for sections of the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk and specifies that the walking route between Doolin and the Visitor Centre is interrupted. For this reason, we do not recommend walking to the visitor centre from Doolin or attempting the full coastal route to Liscannor.
On site, stick to open areas and follow the signs, even if an app still shows an old route. An itinerary that gives you two hours of free time does not authorize you to use closed sections. At the viewpoints, stay behind the barriers and keep away from the edge. Take photos only in permitted areas, without trying to get a shot from beyond the barriers.
Before setting out, check Met Éireann’s alerts for County Clare, then look for updates from the operator. Rain, wind and visibility can affect how you experience the site. Dense fog limits the views; strong winds can make a walk uncomfortable and may lead to access restrictions. The excursion remains subject to local safety decisions.
For clothing, bring several layers, a hooded waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip. A hat and gloves take up little space and are useful during outdoor stops. Secure lightweight items and protect your phone or camera from the rain. Having clothes that let you get back into the vehicle without staying soaked also makes the rest of the journey more comfortable.
When travelling with children, first consider the overall duration and transport conditions, then the number of stops. Breaks in Doolin and any indoor visits offer a different kind of downtime from the viewpoints. For anyone with reduced mobility, ask for details about vehicle access, walking distances and facilities available on site: knowing that the tour uses a coach or private vehicle does not tell you everything about the route.
Meals and budget
Plan separately for lunch on all five tours. On itineraries that include Doolin, the break gives you time to eat within the time allowed by the driver; food and personal purchases are extra. With the express option, plan your meal around the departure time and the length of your visit so you can still enjoy a proper walk at the Cliffs.
The main additional cost identified in this selection is a visit to Aillwee Cave. For the private tour, check the group pricing basis, agreed stops and services listed in your confirmation. The prices shown on the cards come from the main listings; the final price depends on the date, tour option and travellers selected when you book.
Cancellation terms also need to be read carefully. Distinguish between your right to cancel, the conditions for a departure that requires a minimum group size, and operator decisions related to extreme weather. Keep the messages and contact the provider if a change is announced. For the return to Galway, leave your evening flexible rather than making a timed dinner or another departure depend on the excursion arriving exactly on schedule.
FAQ
Can you visit the Cliffs of Moher in December or January?
Yes, land-based excursions from Galway are offered during this period. Availability depends on each product’s calendar, with exceptions around the holidays and possible cancellations due to weather or minimum group size. The private vehicle tour featured here, for example, is unavailable from December 23, 2026, through January 17, 2027. For a winter visit, we recommend using the permitted areas around the visitor centre and choosing an itinerary that does not include a cruise.
Which excursion should I choose for a first visit from Galway?
We would choose the eight-hour coastal tour with two hours at the Cliffs, admission included, and commentary in English. It combines a comfortable amount of sightseeing time with the Burren coast and a stop in Doolin. If you mainly want to see Moher and return earlier, the five-hour-fifteen-minute express also includes two hours on site. Poulnabrone becomes the best deciding factor if the prehistoric monument is what motivates your trip.
Do the excursions include admission to the Cliffs?
The five selected products state that admission to the Cliffs site or visitor centre is included in their inclusions or itinerary. Aillwee Cave is explicitly an extra cost on the tour that stops there. Meals are not included. Check the package summary before paying, especially if you switch products or choose a private option: services attached to similar-sounding names may differ.
Can you walk from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher?
Do not plan the route to the Visitor Centre as an open hiking trail: the notice consulted on Sport Ireland reports closed sections and no access to the centre from Doolin via the trail. Arrange to arrive by road. For a local walk, follow only authorised sections and current signage; older maps and accounts may not describe current access.
Is there a boat beneath the Cliffs in winter?
The Doolin Ferry schedule consulted shows the season ending on 1 November 2026 and resuming on 27 February 2027. Aran Island Ferries’ departures from Galway City are listed from 26 March to 3 October 2027. For December and January, our guide therefore recommends a land-based visit. The Connemara island ferries are a separate trip, which should be arranged according to their own service and sea conditions.
Can you get to the Cliffs without an organised excursion?
Yes, Bus Éireann route 350 serves the Galway–Ennis route via the Cliffs. Check the day’s return timetable and then the site access details to work out how much time you’ll have and the total cost. The express packages these elements together with admission; the tours add stops and commentary. The public bus is suitable for an independent visit when its timetable fits your stay.
Is there a French-speaking guide in this selection?
The selected guided tours advertise commentary in English. The express transfer does not include a tour guide. Choose according to your understanding and the service you want: transport with a self-guided visit, or explanations along the way. The cards link to the exact products; check their languages and options before booking.
Which option should I choose with young children?
A private tour can make departures and breaks easier, and a baby seat is advertised on request, subject to confirmation. Rules differ on group trips: the express requires a car seat for children under two but does not provide one, and the Aillwee tour requires a seat for children under five. Provide the children’s ages before purchasing. On site, a short walk in the protected areas and suitable clothing make it easier to adapt the visit to the wind and everyone’s comfort.
