A night in a historic carriage, three days of discoveries departing from London, or lunch overlooking the Alps: Europe’s luxury trains offer very different journeys. Here’s how to compare the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, La Dolce Vita, the Britannic Explorer, and the Glacier Express, including the booking details that really matter and the next verified schedules.
Three Ways to Travel
The first choice is how much time you want to spend on board. On a Venice Simplon-Orient-Express Paris–Venice trip, one night brings together dinner, the bar, a bed, and breakfast in restored 1920s carriages. The journey fits between two city stays. With the Britannic Explorer, excursions and meals span several days: the train becomes your main accommodation during a tour. On the Glacier Express, everything takes place during the day, seated facing the scenery, before you continue to a hotel at your destination.
This difference determines much of the budget and logistics. A scenic train ticket still means booking nights before and after the journey. A rail cruise may include tours and transfers that would cost extra on an independent trip. As for a historic cabin, its value also lies in its decor and service; its facilities deserve as much scrutiny as those of a hotel room.
For a couple’s anniversary, start by deciding what kind of memory you want to create. A formal dinner and a night on board point to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Gastronomy and stops in Italy suggest looking into the La Dolce Vita Orient Express. Several days in the British countryside suit the Britannic Explorer. An Alpine day with a window seat and full dining service points to Glacier Express Excellence Class. These criteria help narrow down the options before you even request a quote.
The VSOE’s Historic Cabin
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, often abbreviated to VSOE, is operated by Belmond. Its offering combines restored vintage carriages, restaurants, the 3674 Bar with live music, and steward service. Paris–Venice is among the overnight journeys featured by the operator. Other routes travel to destinations including Vienna and Florence; each departure has its own itinerary and duration. Choose a specific journey rather than searching for a single “Orient Express ticket” valid across a network.
The Historic Cabin retains an old-fashioned railway layout: the daytime banquettes convert into berths, a cabinet conceals the washbasin, and toilets are shared at the end of the carriage. This setup suits travelers who want to experience the night in its historic setting. Make sure you understand it before booking, especially if one of you gets up frequently or wants fully private bathroom facilities.
Suites have a private bathroom and are available with a double bed or twin beds. Grand Suites also add a separate lounge area. Choosing between these categories therefore depends on cabin privacy, bed configuration, and available space, as well as the materials. For two travelers with different habits, the right sleeping arrangement may matter more than a slightly longer journey. Ask for the exact category in the quote: the train’s name alone does not describe the room you are buying.
Luggage preparation contributes to comfort. Belmond recommends separating the items you need during the journey from the larger suitcases placed in the baggage car, which you cannot access again until arrival. Keep medication, documents, and useful overnight items with you. Evening dress is required for dinner; jeans are not allowed on board, according to the operator’s FAQ. Packing these clothes in the accessible luggage means you won’t have to repack at boarding time.
The Paris–Amalfi Coast Stay
The journey to the Amalfi Coast illustrates particularly well why it is important to read what is included. Belmond’s “Paris to the Amalfi Coast and Caruso” programme includes three nights in total: one aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, followed by two at Caruso in Ravello. The stay therefore combines the train with a hotel on the coast. For the dates currently displayed on the official Villeggiatura by Train page, the advertised departure corresponds to the stay from 22 to 25 April 2027.
The train reaches Pompeii; road transfers continue the journey to the visits and Ravello. Amalfi here refers to the region of the stay, not to a station arriving beside its harbour. This detail changes how you should read the trip: you are buying an organised transition between Paris, Campania’s heritage and a hotel set high above the coast. The page also provides for a transfer at the end of the stay to Naples station or airport. The return journey to your home must be checked separately in the quote.
The experiences on offer include alternatives. The official presentation mentions a private visit to Pompeii or a cooking class, followed by either a boat trip along the coast or a painting activity. The option actually selected, weather-related constraints and services tied to the booked category should be stated in the confirmation. Book this programme for the package as a whole: one night aboard the train, two nights in Ravello and organised activities, with fewer reservations for you to coordinate yourself.
To extend your stay, you could consider adding a few nights after the package rather than between its stages. This preserves the included transfers and gives you more freedom afterwards. The photograph of Villa Rufolo shown here sets Ravello and its coastal views in context; it depicts another place in the town, distinct from Hotel Caruso. Visiting the gardens would therefore require time of your own and possibly a separate reservation as part of your extension.
La Dolce Vita in Italy
La Dolce Vita Orient Express is a different offering from Belmond’s VSOE. Its visual identity draws on Italian design of the 1960s; the official page presents overnight journeys and day trips, with Rome among the departure cities. To choose, start with the number of nights and the stops on the programme that interests you. Two itineraries bearing the same train name can leave very different amounts of time to explore a city or region.
Gastronomy is an important part of this offering. The culinary programme is led by Heinz Beck, a chef with three Michelin stars. This refers to the culinary direction announced by the operator; it does not mean that the train itself has three Michelin stars. Breakfast, aperitivo and meals are part of an experience focused on Italian cuisine and ingredients. If your trip is centred on food, check which meals are included and how they fit around the excursions: lunch on board and lunch on shore shape the day differently.
The right way to compare it with the VSOE is to consider the entire journey. On one side are historic carriages and routes between major European cities; on the other is a contemporary Italian world inspired by the 1960s and programmes specific to La Dolce Vita. Align the departure, arrival, cabin category and visits before comparing two fares. For example, a circular itinerary that returns to its departure city avoids some of the repositioning costs involved in a one-way journey.
The booking page may display many months in its selector. Only a date linked to an itinerary that is actually offered can serve as the basis for planning your stay. Once you find that combination, plan your hotel before the journey, your transfer to the boarding point and your arrangements after arrival. If it is your first visit to Rome, booking a few days in the city around the train journey also means you won’t spend your entire trip moving between the airport, hotel and train.
The Britannic Explorer cruise
The Britannic Explorer departs from London Victoria and offers three-night British itineraries, as well as six-night combinations. The destinations presented include Cornwall, Wales and the Lake District. With eighteen cabins, a bar and an observation car, this train offers a multi-stop stay with experiences off the train. The cuisine is overseen by Simon Rogan; meals and drinks are listed as included in the general presentation of the offering.
You can choose an itinerary based on the scenery and duration you want. Cornwall offers a maritime focus; Wales takes you on a different route, while the Lake District is a third option for exploring. To compare these regions, read the day-by-day itinerary and note the travel times, outings and meals planned on shore. A region’s name in the title does not tell you how many hours you will actually spend there off the train.
This option suits travellers who want to keep the same accommodation while discovering several places. It reduces the need to move luggage between hotels, but you do need to follow the itinerary’s pace. If you are travelling with others, compare what they want from the trip: walks, fine dining, time at the bar or rest in the cabin. The same price category can cover very different stays depending on how much emphasis is placed on group activities and free time.
Departing from and returning to London makes it easy to build a British stay around the itinerary. An overnight stay in the capital before departure is a prudent planning choice for an expensive booking, particularly after an international journey. Check separately which UK entry requirements apply to your nationality and travel documents. They apply to the British trip as a whole, even if your rail booking includes accommodation and meals once on board.
The Glacier Express panorama
The Glacier Express connects Zermatt and St. Moritz through the Swiss Alps. The route passes, among other places, over the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 metres, through the Rhine Gorge and across the Landwasser Viaduct. The full journey takes about a day. It lets you watch villages, valleys and railway structures unfold without constantly changing trains. The stops along the route add variety to this long stretch of time seated; the scenery remains the main reason to choose this journey.
Excellence Class adds a level of service and dining to the journey. The carriage accommodates twenty passengers, with a guaranteed window seat, a concierge and access to the Glacier Bar. The dining programme includes a champagne welcome and a five-course menu accompanied by wine and non-alcoholic drinks. The meal is therefore served while you travel, without needing to arrange a restaurant stop between connections.
The booking calculation has two separate elements: a first-class ticket valid for the journey and the specific Excellence Class reservation. A rail pass accepted on the route may cover all or part of the transport, depending on its terms; it does not eliminate the mandatory reservation. Provide your pass details and class before paying so the seller can distinguish what you already have from what you still need to buy. This helps avoid confusing a comfort supplement with a full ticket.
The journey ends the same day: nights in Zermatt or St. Moritz must be arranged separately unless they are part of a clearly identified package. For a first crossing, we prefer staying overnight before departure and then keeping the evening of arrival free in the other resort. This puts the panoramic journey at the centre of the day. It also avoids turning the final hours into a wait for a tight connection to a distant city.
The 2026–2027 calendars
At the end of autumn 2026, check the timetable before booking any hotels. The official Glacier Express timetable page announces a service interruption from October 11 to December 4, 2026. The winter timetable begins on December 5, 2026 and runs through May 7, 2027. A trip to Switzerland planned for November should therefore not be built around the assumption that the Glacier Express runs every day of the year. Other trains on the network require their own timetable checks.
For spring 2027, the same page notes a closure for construction work in the Rhine Gorge from April 17 to May 2, with replacement bus service between Chur and Disentis. Excellence Class has separate exclusions for each direction: April 16 to May 2 for train 903, and April 17 to May 3 for train 902. If your goal is a full day by rail in this class of service, choose a date that fits these notices and have the route confirmed.
The Paris–Amalfi Coast itinerary, meanwhile, has published stay dates of April 22 to 25, 2027. This information lets you make a specific inquiry; it does not guarantee that a cabin will be available. For other trains, check the actual departure offered, the category and the itinerary together. Calendars vary by route: an entire sales season does not establish that a particular train runs every day.
The season also changes what you see from the window. Longer days provide more daylight for the scenery; winter may offer snowy views, depending on the weather and altitude. These preferences should come after checking the operating dates. For a trip combining rail travel and sightseeing, also consider how much time you will spend outdoors and whether you can enjoy the advertised activities on your date, especially if a boat trip is among the options.
The budget for the full trip
To compare two proposals, ask for a total based on the same number of travelers and the same cabin occupancy. A price shown per person in a double cabin is not the cost of an entire cabin, and it may not be the fare for a solo traveler either. The sleeping accommodation category, bathroom facilities and number of nights should be listed alongside the amount. These factors often explain the difference better than the number of miles traveled alone.
Then add the costs around the journey: getting to the departure city, overnight stays beforehand, the return trip from the final destination and transfers you must arrange yourself. For the Glacier Express, hotels are part of this calculation. The Amalfi Coast package reviewed includes two nights at Caruso and transfers. On a British tour, included excursions and meals have their own value. Comparing only ticket prices would overlook these differences and lead to comparing unequal services.
The final check concerns payment and changes. Confirm the deposit, balance, consequences of cancellation and how itinerary changes are handled. If you book other services separately, identify which ones would become unusable if the rail departure were rescheduled. Consider any insurance in light of these commitments and its actual coverage. The written confirmation of the service selected should remain your reference document, rather than an old price screenshot found during your research.
The Bernina from Milan
Travelers already staying in Milan may prefer to discover the Alps in a single day, returning to the same city. The selected Red Bernina train and St. Moritz excursion combines a coach ride with a second-class rail journey. The product advertises carriages with opening windows and a total duration of twelve hours and thirty minutes. Lunch and drinks are paid for separately. This option suits anyone looking for Alpine scenery without adding a night on a hotel train to their Italian stay.
The itinerary includes time in St. Moritz and a journey to Tirano, followed by the return drive to Milan. Mountain views and the route through the Bernina area are the highlights of the day. The ticket offered here is for the Red Train in second class; choose it knowing what the service includes. It lets you travel along a different Alpine line from the Glacier Express, with arrangements suited to a departure from Italy.
Guiding is available in English or Spanish, depending on the variant; French audio is listed among the services for the TG3 option reviewed. Check the exact meeting point on your voucher, and note that hotel pickup depends on the option booked. Bring the original documents required for crossing the Swiss border. The large card below links to this specific product: its prices, rating and photograph are consolidated in the offer rather than repeated in the text.

For a short stay in Venice with a special occasion to celebrate, an overnight Paris–Venice connection can serve as the start of your trip. Compare the cabin with the experience you want to share: dinner and historic atmosphere in a Historic Cabin, or greater privacy with an en-suite bathroom in a Suite. Arrange the Venice hotel and return journey after making this first choice. If you have only a few days, adding multiple stops would reduce the time available at your final destination.
If the train is the main event of your trip, consider a multi-night tour instead. The Britannic Explorer lets you depart from and return to London while keeping the same accommodation; the Paris–Amalfi Coast itinerary takes you to a hotel in Ravello. The practical question is what you want to do on your final day: return to your departure city or continue your holiday in Italy? This preference distinguishes two arrangements that cannot be differentiated by comfort level alone.
For a trip to Switzerland already in the works, schedule the Glacier Express between two nights that are genuinely available at either end of the route. You can then consider Excellence Class as a day of dining and service without rebuilding the entire trip around a cabin. If you are based in Milan and return in the evening, the Bernina excursion is a better fit for a different kind of stay. In both cases, the scenery guides the decision; total travel time and where you will spend the next night make the choice immediately more concrete.
Details to check before departure
For an overnight journey, check the position of the beds, access to bathroom facilities and storage space. For a panoramic day trip, think instead about time spent seated, luggage and meals. Describe any mobility needs to the booking service before paying: steps, moving through corridors and access to the bed may matter as much as assistance at the station. Belmond explicitly invites VSOE travelers with accessibility needs to get in touch so their requirements can be discussed.
Dietary requests should also be specified when booking and then confirmed. An elaborate gastronomic program requires advance planning to adapt the menus. State any allergies and special requirements before the first meal. For children, compare the length of each leg, sleeping space and meal schedule; a short overnight journey and a multi-day cruise require different family arrangements.
Finally, keep the dated itinerary, booked category, departure contacts and connecting tickets together. Once the services are set, the choice becomes simpler: a historic cabin for an overnight journey and ceremony, a British tour for organized stops, an Italian itinerary for dining and excursions, or Excellence Class for a panoramic journey. The best-fit offer is the one whose itinerary matches the days you actually want to spend traveling.
FAQ
What is the difference between the Orient Express and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express?
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is Belmond’s train, with its restored historic carriages and its own European routes. The La Dolce Vita Orient Express is a separate offering, presented on the Orient Express website, with an Italian identity inspired by the 1960s and different itineraries. When booking, use the train’s full name, route, date and category; “Orient Express” alone is not enough to identify the service.
Can you sleep on board all of these trains?
The VSOE, La Dolce Vita itineraries with overnight stays, and the Britannic Explorer offer sleeping accommodations. The Glacier Express operates as a daytime journey, including in Excellence Class, so you need to arrange accommodation at your destination. La Dolce Vita also offers daytime trips: check the duration of your chosen itinerary before counting a night on the train as part of your stay.
Does the Paris–Amalfi train arrive directly in Amalfi?
The Belmond package under consideration provides for arrival by train in Pompeii, followed by road transfers and a stay at the Caruso in Ravello. It includes one night on the VSOE and two nights at the hotel. The official page lists the stay from April 22 to 25, 2027. Amalfi refers to the coast being visited; you do not get off a train in the center of Amalfi.
Is a Swiss Travel Pass enough for Excellence Class?
You need an accepted, valid first-class travel ticket, as well as a specific Excellence Class reservation. A first-class Swiss Travel Pass may cover the transport portion, subject to its terms; the reservation must still be paid for. If you have a second-class pass, ask them to confirm the cost of upgrading to the required class before you buy. The breakdown should distinguish the ticket, any upgrade, and the reservation.
Does the Glacier Express run in November 2026?
The official timetable page announces a suspension from October 11 to December 4, 2026, followed by a winter timetable starting December 5. November therefore falls within the announced suspension. For a trip during that period, look for other rail connections and check their respective timetables, or move the Glacier Express day to a confirmed operating date.
Does the Bernina excursion from Milan include first class?
The selected offer includes a second-class ticket on the red train with opening windows, as well as coach transfers and an accompanying guide, depending on the option. It does not include a first-class upgrade. The meal is separate, and the day lasts a total of twelve hours and thirty minutes. French listed for option TG3 refers to an audio guide; choose the guiding language and meeting point for the option actually booked.
Can you travel on the VSOE with children?
Belmond accepts children but recommends carefully considering the sleeping space, especially when traveling with a baby. The atmosphere in the restaurants and bar is geared toward adult guests; children’s access depends on arrangements made by the train manager. Give the children’s ages when booking and request a suitable configuration, then compare this arrangement with a simpler panoramic day trip to fit into a family vacation.
When should you book a luxury rail trip?
Once your preferred departure and category are on sale, you can request a quote and then check the terms before committing. Cabins and special itineraries have specific inventory. For the Glacier Express, the operator distinguishes between ticket sales and seat reservations: standard reservations generally open up to 93 days before travel, while Excellence Class follows the timetable period on offer. Have the train reservation confirmed before booking non-refundable ancillary services.
