To discover Delhi, part of Rajasthan and the ghats of Varanasi, plan for two weeks and a stop in Agra. This guide suggests how to divide your nights, highlights the visits that give each city its character, and explains which bookings to arrange first. With less time, shorten the route; with three weeks, extend it to Jodhpur or Udaipur.

Four Stops in Two Weeks

The first decision is how much time to spend in Rajasthan. Jaipur offers a way to explore its palaces, forts and markets while staying within the triangle formed by Delhi and Agra. Varanasi lies much farther east, in Uttar Pradesh: adding it means a substantial journey and several nights there. For fourteen days, we recommend these four stops rather than crossing all of Rajasthan.

One possible plan includes three nights in Delhi on arrival, three in Jaipur, two in Agra, three in Varanasi and two in Delhi before returning home. That makes thirteen nights in India, to be adjusted around international flights. The final two nights leave a day free and avoid making your international departure depend on a tight domestic connection. These durations are suggested pacing, not the schedule of a commercial tour.

Travel to a new city takes up a substantial part of the day: leaving the hotel, getting to the station or airport, the journey, checking in and eating. Give it proper space in your itinerary before adding a monument. A well-located hotel and two consecutive nights often offer more than squeezing in a fifth city between transfers.

Delhi, from Neighborhoods to Gardens

Set aside the first day for a measured introduction. Humayun’s Tomb offers an accessible introduction to Mughal architecture: a sandstone and marble mausoleum, orderly vistas and gardens. Lodhi Gardens then provides a less hectic stroll. This pairing works better after an overnight flight than attempting to cross the capital from end to end.

The next day, spend half a day in Old Delhi. Explore Chandni Chowk and the streets near Jama Masjid with a short, focused plan: the market, a few lanes and a meal break are enough to fill several hours. The Red Fort offers another perspective on Mughal Delhi if you want to continue. Check opening hours and any closures before scheduling the day.

To the south, Qutub Minar makes a separate visit. Group sites by area: a round trip between Old Delhi and the southern neighborhoods can easily eat into the time you planned for walking. When choosing accommodation, look for a place with clear access from a metro station and the railway station you’ll depart from next. Connaught Place and the southern neighborhoods suit different travel plans; the exact address matters more than the label “central.”

Make time for the food, too. The class at Saffron Palate is held in English and includes preparing four dishes and three breads, followed by a meal. The recipes provided let you recreate the dishes at home. The meeting point is in Hauz Khas Enclave, not Hauz Khas Village. Tell the operator about your dietary preferences when booking: they offer vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free adaptations on request.

Jaipur, Palaces and Astronomical Instruments

Three nights in Jaipur leave two full days, plus the time available around your transport. Spend a morning in Amer, outside the old city center. The fort and its courtyards help you understand how a fortified residence was laid out, with a succession of spaces rather than a single façade to photograph. Wear suitable shoes for slopes, steps, and uneven surfaces.

In the old city, combine the City Palace and Jantar Mantar. The former brings together courtyards, palace buildings, and collections; the latter invites you to look at instruments whose shapes are used to observe the sky and measure time. An explanation on site makes this visit more interesting than a quick walk past the large stone structures.

Hawa Mahal can be admired from the street, where its perforated façade is part of the urban landscape. Choose your viewpoint without stopping in the middle of traffic. An exterior photograph and an interior visit satisfy two different interests: if your schedule is short, decide what matters most before buying an additional ticket.

The markets offer another way to experience Jaipur. Johari Bazaar is particularly associated with jewelry and textiles; Bapu Bazaar also has clothing and handicraft shops. For a significant purchase, ask for the material, total price, and shipping terms in writing. A guided tour may include commercial stops: before setting out, explain that you want free time and clarify your genuine interest in workshops.

Agra, One Night Before the Taj

Arriving in Agra the day before visiting the Taj Mahal makes it easier to go in the morning without leaving Delhi in the middle of the night. First check the day of the week: the monument is closed every Friday. Account for this closure before booking train tickets and hotels, especially if your stay allows only one possible morning visit.

The Taj Mahal can be appreciated at several scales: the perspective of the gardens and reflecting pool, the proportions of the mausoleum, and then the details of the marble and inlay work. Uttar Pradesh Tourism distinguishes between the general admission ticket and the supplement for the main mausoleum. Compare the inclusions of a guided visit with what you actually want to see. Keep your ID accessible for checks.

The selected private tour departs from Agra, with local pickup and admission included as advertised. French is among the languages offered: select it when booking and confirm your meeting point. This option suits travelers who want explanations about the mausoleum’s history and architecture without buying a full tour from Delhi. Review the exact terms of the option you choose before paying.

A second night lets you add Agra Fort and keep some flexibility before your next journey. If the Taj is your only objective, one night may be enough, depending on the connections you actually book. For our two-week itinerary, two nights avoid combining a dawn visit, a rushed departure, and a long arrival in a new city.

Varanasi, Three Nights Near the Ganges

In Varanasi, the ghats are steps and riverfront spaces used for different practices: prayers, ritual bathing, getting around, and funeral rites. Exploring them takes time on foot and calls for consideration of the people present. Choose accommodation whose final approach you understand: in the narrow lanes, a car may have to drop you some distance from the door. Ask the property where to meet its staff with your luggage.

A first walk between the Assi and Dashashwamedh areas will help you get your bearings, without requiring you to cover the entire riverfront. At Dashashwamedh, the evening aarti is a daily religious ceremony. Arrive with enough time to find an exit and decide where to stand. Crowds, river levels, and local arrangements can affect movement. A spot on a terrace or in a boat is a specific service to be arranged separately.

The next morning, a boat trip lets you see the continuous line of façades and steps from the Ganges. Before boarding, ask about the route, duration, total price, and whether a suitable life jacket is provided. Follow local navigation restrictions; in winter, fog can affect visibility and departure times. Keep another morning free rather than making the entire visit depend on a single sunrise.

To understand the lanes and local customs, we recommend a private heritage tour in English. The advertised route combines several stops in the old city and religious sites; agree with the guide on access and admissions for your package. A guide can help you interpret the spaces, locate the temples, and adapt the route for the group. Entry to each shrine remains subject to its own rules.

Near cremation sites, let families and processions pass, put your camera away, and keep your distance. Elsewhere in the city, ask permission before taking portraits. You can devote an additional half-day to Sarnath, associated with the Buddha’s first sermon, to discover another aspect of the region’s religious history. Check the opening days of the museum and the sites you plan to visit separately.

Jodhpur or Udaipur as an Extension

With three weeks, add a second city in Rajasthan before heading to Agra and Varanasi, then adjust your transport. Jodhpur is particularly suited to an interest in fortifications and old cities: Mehrangarh overlooks the neighborhoods below the hill, while the markets around the clock tower offer another walk. Plan two or three nights, depending on your pace and the connection you choose.

Udaipur centers the stay on the City Palace and Lake Pichola. The area around Jagdish Temple and the streets near the lake are ideal for walks between visits. A boat ride can be arranged through the chosen jetty and service, each with its own terms. Three nights leave time for the waterfront and museums without turning every free moment into an excursion.

Jaisalmer appeals to travelers who put the desert first. Adding it to the west significantly changes the geography of the trip: on a two-week itinerary that includes Varanasi, we prefer to save it for another trip or remove a major stop. On a ten-day trip, stick to Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra; you can discover Varanasi on a journey focused on the Ganges Valley.

When to Travel

From October to March, conditions are generally more favorable for city sightseeing on this itinerary than at the height of the hot season. Incredible India recommends this period for Varanasi; its monthly data for Delhi and Jaipur show a sharp rise in temperatures in spring. For long walks, November through February is a good initial window to consider, though you should expect cool mornings and evenings.

Winter still calls for flexibility: fog can affect river views and travel. In Delhi, also check local air-quality information, especially if you are sensitive to pollution. Plan a day that you can shorten or reschedule, and choose bookings whose change conditions you understand.

In spring and summer, high temperatures call for a different pace: visit early, take indoor breaks, and make fewer journeys. The monsoon can also affect riverside routes and outings on the water. If a festival is motivating your trip, look up its confirmed edition before booking anything; this guide offers an itinerary outside the event calendar and does not automatically assume a Diwali or fair date.

Trains, Cars, and Domestic Flights

The train works well for major legs when you have a confirmed reservation and schedules that fit your overnight stays. Look up the exact station names: New Delhi is not the capital’s only station, and Varanasi has several access points, including Varanasi Junction, Banaras, and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction. Compare the entire journey to your hotel, not just the train’s arrival time.

A car with a driver can make some intercity trips and excursions to nearby sites such as Amer easier to arrange. Ask for a quote that specifies fuel, tolls, parking, the driver’s expenses, and any additional days. Don’t treat the speed shown on a map as time you can reclaim for sightseeing. Breaks and traffic are part of the journey; we recommend limiting consecutive hotel changes.

To reach Varanasi, compare train and flight options that are actually available on your dates. A flight may require a connection; an overnight train calls for a confirmed berth and a plan for your luggage. Don’t book a connection based solely on an old travel account. Start with this major journey, then book the legs of the Delhi–Jaipur–Agra triangle and any activities at fixed times.

Practicalities and everyday life on the ground

For holders of a French passport, India’s official portal offers an e-Visa subject to certain conditions. These include a passport valid for at least six months at the time of application and a return or onward ticket. Choose the category that matches your stay, check the information you enter, and make sure the electronic authorization is marked as granted before you leave. Carry a copy of the ETA along with the passport used for the application.

The same portal presents the e-Arrival card, to be completed within seventy-two hours before arrival, as an information form separate from the visa. Recheck the requirements at the time of departure, particularly depending on your nationality and transit route. The indianvisaonline.gov.in domain helps you avoid confusing the public service with a commercial intermediary using a similar name.

For your health, arrange a consultation tailored to your circumstances before the trip. On site, choose water whose source you know, wash your hands, and opt for food served thoroughly cooked and hot. Bring any medication you need and insurance whose assistance terms you understand. Easy-to-remove shoes, clothing that covers you for religious sites, and a small bag make visits with security checks easier.

Check France Diplomatie before you leave and during your stay. The rules it highlights include restrictions on satellite communication devices and dedicated GPS units; the ministry specifies that phones with GPS apps are not covered by this ban. Avoid demonstrations, and keep your documents and an assistance contact accessible offline.

Budget and reservations

Build your budget around your actual itinerary: international flights, overnight stays, major journeys, local transport, meals, admission fees, and guides. For a shared car, divide the total quote by the number of travelers; for a train or flight, add transfers at both ends. A well-located extra night may cost less than private transport booked to rescue an overpacked schedule.

Compare hotels based on the room and access: air conditioning or heating depending on the season, breakfast, taxes, cancellation terms, and distance from the drop-off point. In Varanasi, a view of the Ganges and an easy arrival with luggage are two factors to weigh. For guided visits, check the language, entry fees, pickup, and group size. Prices and reviews for the selected activities appear on their cards, alongside the available data from the central catalog.

Book your flights and the connection to Varanasi first, then the overnight stays that shape the itinerary. Next, schedule the Taj Mahal with Friday in mind, along with guided visits and the cooking class. Leave a few slots open for markets, meals, and the weather. This way, you’ll have an organized trip without having to book every walk in advance.

FAQ

Is two weeks enough for Delhi, Rajasthan, and Varanasi?

Yes, if you limit Rajasthan to Jaipur and allow enough time for travel. The proposed itinerary includes Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, and Varanasi, with thirteen nights split across four bases and a return to Delhi. Three weeks is more comfortable if you want to add Jodhpur or Udaipur and have full days for sightseeing.

Which itinerary should I choose for ten days?

We recommend Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. You’ll have time to recover from your flight, visit Amer, and stay overnight in Agra before seeing the Taj Mahal. If Varanasi is your priority, build the trip around Delhi and Varanasi instead, adding Agra only if the connections allow you to keep several nights by the Ganges.

Do I need a driver for the entire trip?

A driver can be useful for intercity journeys and excursions to nearby sites, but each stop has different needs. Delhi has a metro, the old city centers are largely explored on foot, and in Varanasi you may need to approach your hotel on foot. Compare having a driver throughout with confirmed trains and occasional transfers, including all fees.

When is the Taj Mahal closed?

The Taj Mahal closes every Friday, according to the official Uttar Pradesh tourism website. If you arrive on Thursday evening and leave on Friday, your schedule won’t allow for the usual visit. Check this before booking transport; also verify whether your ticket includes access to the main mausoleum.

Is a boat ride in Varanasi essential?

You can also explore the ghats from the riverbank. A boat offers a different, sweeping view that can be interesting at the start of your stay, but the trip depends on conditions and local permissions. Agree on the total price and route, ask for a life jacket, and plan another walk in case boating or visibility conditions aren’t suitable.

Can I take the tours in French?

The selected Taj Mahal product lists French as one of its languages; select that option and confirm it before the visit. The Delhi cooking class and the Varanasi heritage walk presented here are conducted in English. The fact that an activity has a listing in French does not, by itself, indicate the language in which it is conducted.

Which visa should I apply for for this itinerary?

For a tourist trip with a French passport, check the e-Tourist categories on India’s official portal and their current conditions. The permitted duration and number of entries depend on the category granted. Check your ETA before departure, carry a copy, and complete any requested arrival information separately; don’t set off with an application that is still pending.

What daily budget should I plan for?

The amount depends mainly on your accommodation, whether you share a vehicle, and how many guided visits you take. Add up your bookable overnight stays, confirmed transport, meals, and admission fees, then keep a buffer for local travel and unexpected costs. This personalized calculation is more reliable than a daily package meant to cover both train travel and a private tour.
