The Blue Grotto is visited in a small rowboat, close to an opening that the sea can make impassable. From Naples, your choice of excursion mainly determines the crossing, how you get around Capri, and the rest of your day. Here are five options to compare: a group tour, a private guide, a departure from the island, and two boat trips from Sorrento.
The three journeys to the grotto
Inside the Grotta Azzurra, light from outside illuminates the water beneath a dark vault. This cavern lies on Capri's northwestern coast, below the remains of the Roman Villa of Gradola. To reach it from Naples, you must first get to the island, then reach the site, before boarding the small rowboat that enters the grotto. These three stages may involve different tickets and operators. How much of this journey is included explains much of the difference between excursions.
The first leg connects Naples with Marina Grande, Capri's port. A guided day trip from Naples may include round-trip tickets on a fast ferry and a meeting with the guide before crossing. A tour that departs from Capri begins after this stage: you buy your own sea transport. The meeting point is therefore more revealing than the mere presence of the words “Capri” and “Blue Grotto” in the tour title.
From Marina Grande, there are two ways to reach the area around the cavern: a boat follows the coast, or a vehicle crosses the island toward Anacapri and the grotto area. The land route ends with steps down to the boarding point. In either case, the final visit is in a small rowboat. So a road transfer to the site does not mean you can skip the boat.
Finally, the heritage-site ticket and rowboat service are separate from the approach transfer. Some tours include them; others only stop in front of the grotto, with the visit paid for on site. We would compare this entire chain first, before looking at the price. That makes it clear what you still need to arrange and pay for, as well as how many connections you want to entrust to a guide.
Five options to compare
For a first day trip from Naples, our group-tour pick is the nine-hour option with ferry, shuttles, and grotto admission. It brings together the main connections, with an English-speaking guide and an itinerary around Capri and Anacapri. For an established group that wants commentary in French, the private day trip offers a different arrangement: a dedicated guide, private ground transport, and several admissions included. The crossing is still on a shared ferry.
A departure directly from Capri suits travelers staying on the island or those who want to choose their own connection from Naples. The two trips from Sorrento are better suited to those looking for time on the water, coastal scenery, and swimming. If you are staying in Naples, you will need to reach the peninsula first. We would mainly consider them during a stay that already includes Sorrento, rather than adding an early-morning journey to an already packed day.
| Option | Actual departure point | Advertised duration | Key inclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group tour | Molo Beverello, Naples | 9 hours | Ferry, shuttles, and grotto included; English-speaking guide |
| Private day trip | Naples, Sorrento, or Capri depending on option | 8 hours from the mainland | Private guide, French offered, grotto, chairlift, and gardens included |
| Visit on the island | Marina Grande, Capri | 7 hours | Grotto, vehicle, and gardens; crossing arranged independently |
| Boat trip with free time | Port of Sorrento | 7 hours for the full-day option shown | Boat trip and about 3 hours ashore; grotto at extra cost |
| Boat trip for up to eight travelers | Piano di Sorrento | 7 to 8 hours | Local pickup confirmed, sandwich, and drinks; grotto at extra cost |
On small screens, scroll the table sideways.
The durations are those of the services reviewed. They start at the meeting time set by each provider, not at the door of your accommodation in Naples. Prices and reviews are listed on the corresponding product cards; extras and variants require separate consideration. None of these services can make the cave open when the sea prevents access.
The group tour from Naples
The selected group tour starts at Molo Beverello, opposite the Castel Nuovo area. You meet the guide before taking the fast ferry to Capri. Round-trip tickets, shuttle transfers on the island, and admission to the Blue Grotto are included. This seamless arrangement is its main advantage: you do not have to coordinate a separately purchased crossing with a group already waiting for you at Marina Grande.
The day is scheduled for nine hours, with a maximum of twenty travelers and commentary in English. On arrival in Capri, the shuttle goes to the grotto area before the stops in Anacapri and Capri town. The order may be adjusted depending on conditions and waiting times. The listing provides for a shared boat ride around the island when the grotto is closed, provided navigation remains possible.
In Anacapri, the itinerary allows time for lunch and a possible ride up Monte Solaro. The chairlift is paid separately, as is the meal. The stop in Capri town then lets you explore the Piazzetta area. The Gardens of Augustus are listed on the itinerary, but admission is not included: if you want to visit during the time available, add that ticket to the day’s expenses. The guide arranges the transfers, while some sightseeing choices remain up to you.
We recommend this option for travelers comfortable with English who want to combine the grotto with the island’s two main centers. The ferry and shuttles save you from spending part of your trip comparing connections. However, you follow the group’s pace: time for coffee, a walk, or the chairlift must fit around the meeting time. A small group of twenty is still a group tour, including for the return to the port.

View activityThe day with a private guide
The eight-hour private day stands out for its dedicated guide and included admissions. The product is offered in French, as well as English, Spanish, and German. The round-trip fast ferry from the mainland is included, followed by private ground transportation for the group on Capri. The listing specifies a convertible for up to five people and a shuttle for groups of six or more. This option will particularly appeal to a family or group of friends who want to stay together with their guide.
Admission to the grotto, the Monte Solaro chairlift, and the Gardens of Augustus are included. Having all three included makes it easier to compare this service fairly with a tour where these visits are added to the advertised price. Lunch, drinks, Villa San Michele, and hotel transfers are not included. The meeting point depends on the selected option: Naples, Sorrento, or Capri itself. You must select French and the correct departure point when booking.
The private nature of the service applies to the tour and the advertised ground transportation. You take a shared ferry from Naples or Sorrento; the grotto visit uses the local small boats. If the grotto is closed, the advertised alternative is also a shared boat tour around the island. These details matter if your main wish is to charter an entire boat for your group: this product is designed for guided touring on the island.
A private guide is also valuable for the conversation. You can ask questions about the sights and discuss your priorities with the guide within the time available. Access to the grotto remains subject to queues and access decisions; a long wait naturally reduces the time available for other stops. We would identify the two ground-based visits that matter most to the group from the outset, so the guide can organize the day around them.
One option starts in Capri, without ferry tickets, and has a different on-island duration from the option departing from the mainland. Check this detail when comparing multiple prices on the same page. For one person or a couple, the cost of a private service should be weighed against the preferred language and included admissions. For a group, ask for the price covering all participants before comparing it with an individual group-tour price.

View activityThe independent ferry and Capri
The seven-hour tour departing from Marina Grande lets you arrange the crossing separately from your guided visit on the island. It includes an air-conditioned vehicle, a guide, the Blue Grotto when access is open, and the Gardens of Augustus. The advertised group can include up to twenty-five people, with commentary in English or Spanish. The chairlift and Villa San Michele must be booked or paid for separately during the time available.
This is a natural choice if you are already spending a night on Capri. You meet on the island and keep your usual return tickets. From Naples, it takes more planning: your outbound crossing must arrive before the meeting time, and your return crossing must depart after the tour actually ends. The seven hours do not include a mainland round trip arranged by the provider. Allow time to disembark, find the group, and then make your way to the right dock.
To buy your own transport, the Caremar website lets you search for Naples–Capri and Sorrento–Capri. The Naples terminal depends on the service you book: ferries and hydrofoils may depart from different locations, including Porta di Massa and Molo Beverello. Check the port printed on your ticket, then the check-in time required by the company. The departures shown for a particular day do not automatically reflect the following season’s schedule.
On Capri, this tour meets at Marina Grande. The commercial instructions reviewed mention different shop landmarks; your confirmation should provide the exact meeting point and the guide’s contact details. We would favor this option for a traveler already on the island or staying overnight, rather than trying to save a few minutes between two boats. Its main benefit is independence for the crossing while leaving road logistics and the main visits to the provider.
Another option is to arrange everything yourself: take the ferry to Marina Grande, then use a transfer boat or ground transport to reach the grotto. The operator Motoscafisti di Capri has a dock numbered 0 at Marina Grande and explicitly distinguishes its transport from grotto admission and the local boat. This arrangement suits those who want to devote most of their time to a single site, then improvise the rest of the outing depending on the wait and the time of their return.

View activityThe boat from Sorrento
The boat trip from the port of Sorrento places greater emphasis on the coastline. The full-day option described here is listed as seven hours, with a tour of Capri, a stop at the Blue Grotto if conditions allow, a swimming break, and about three hours on land. The skipper provides commentary in English or Italian. The product lists a maximum of twelve guests on the shared trip and also offers an option explicitly limited to eight participants.
The cruise takes in several stretches of the coast: the Faraglioni, the area around the Green Grotto, the White Grotto, and the Punta Carena lighthouse are all on the itinerary. The view is from the boat. A photo stop or passing by a cave does not amount to an indoor visit like the one at the Blue Grotto. For the latter, you must still transfer to a local rowboat and pay the entrance fee, which is not included in this offer.
Included are the skipper, fuel, drinks, fruit, masks, and life jackets. Lunch, a towel, and service fees related to boarding or disembarking are separate. Swimming depends on the season and conditions, as well as the captain’s decisions. On land, free time lets you have lunch and explore part of Capri; any travel and visits you undertake then must fit within that time slot.
Pay particular attention when choosing an option. The same product offers a four-hour morning trip without disembarking on the island, a five-hour afternoon trip, and a private option. For the combination of cruising and time on land described here, choose the full day with disembarkation. The product’s overall duration alone is not enough to identify the option you have booked: the booking summary should include the amount of time on land you want.
The journey from Naples to the port of Sorrento must be arranged separately. We would therefore book this trip during a stay already planned on the peninsula. That way, you can enjoy the coast without adding an early-morning overland transfer and the return trip after the cruise. For a single day starting from a hotel in Naples, the tour with a meeting point at Molo Beverello is more straightforward to arrange.

View activityEight guests from the peninsula
The second boat trip selected departs from Piano di Sorrento and lasts seven to eight hours. The shared option accommodates a maximum of eight guests, with an English-speaking skipper; Italian is also listed among the available languages. It combines a coastal route, a stop at the Blue Grotto subject to its opening, and time on land. A caprese sandwich and drinks are included, distinguishing it from the previous trip in terms of meal arrangements.
The itinerary mentions the Faraglioni, the Green Grotto, the White Grotto, and the Punta Carena lighthouse. Disembarkation allows for a listed three to five hours on the island, depending on how the day unfolds. This free time is an important consideration if you want to walk, have a longer lunch, or choose a visit. Before setting off on foot, however, check the reboarding point and time: the boat follows a group itinerary.
Pickup may be arranged in an accommodation area on the peninsula. The logistical details mention Sorrento and several nearby towns, with a convenient meeting point nearby if your accommodation is in a restricted-traffic zone. Pickup details vary in the listing; have your address and exact meeting point confirmed. No pickup from Naples is advertised. If you arrive on the peninsula that same morning, you are responsible for getting there.
The Blue Grotto entrance fee and local docking or disembarkation fees are excluded. Snorkeling equipment must be brought along or purchased separately. We would choose this option for the boat’s small capacity, local pickup when confirmed, and the simple meal already provided. The listing also includes a private option: compare its price and service with the shared option for eight guests, without automatically assuming that the conditions of one apply to the other.

View activityThe visit in the rowboat
The low entrance gives the visit its distinctive character. You get into a small rowboat, then follow the boatman’s instructions to duck as you pass through the opening. The excursion boat or ferry stays outside. Changing boats is part of the experience, even when all tickets are included in your day trip. It is also worth considering if you have difficulty sitting low or getting back up.
The visit inside is brief. The local guide Capri.net mentions about five minutes inside the cave, while the wait can be much longer. The appeal lies in the color of the water and the contrast between the light at the entrance and the dark walls. The time allocated to “the Blue Grotto” in a commercial itinerary therefore generally includes the approach, the queue, the transfer, and the visit; it does not mean a full hour inside.
The heritage authority explains that the cave was part of an imperial residential complex and served as a nymphaeum. Roman sculptures from the site are now kept at Capri’s archaeological museum, in the Certosa di San Giacomo. This history helps you understand the site beyond its color. The growth in tourist visits from 1826 onward refers to a place already known in antiquity, rather than the cave’s initial discovery.
Swimming should be limited to the authorized stops on your boat trip. The small rowboats enter and leave through a narrow opening; the local operator also reminds visitors that access is prohibited when the grotto is closed. A video of swimmers passing beneath the opening is therefore not an alternative to a ticket or a way around a closure. During the visit, keep your hands, phone, and personal belongings inside the boat, and follow the boatman’s instructions.
Waiting times and closures
Access depends on sea conditions at the entrance, not just on the sunshine you see in Naples. Swells or unfavorable winds may prevent the small rowboats from entering even when the ferry is operating normally to Capri. Conditions can also change throughout the day. Motoscafisti di Capri explains that conditions are assessed on site in the morning and cannot be guaranteed far in advance. A booking arranges your transport; it cannot control the sea.
The queue is another important variable. Capri.net reports waits of up to two hours in high season. This indicates what may happen, not how long you will wait on the day of your visit. Arriving in the morning can help with planning, but none of the selected products should be purchased as a guarantee of immediate access. “Small group” describes the size of the excursion; the rowboat used to enter the grotto is part of a shared visitor operation at the site.
The alternatives offered differ by trip. The selected land tours provide for a shared boat tour around the island if the grotto closes, when navigation is possible. The boat trip from Sorrento may extend time on land or swimming time, depending on the captain’s decision. The second boat trip has arrangements for weather-related cancellation of the excursion. A grotto closure and cancellation of the entire service are two separate contractual situations to consider.
We would therefore choose a day whose land or sea itinerary also appeals to you. Capri and Anacapri provide continuity to the excursion if the cave remains inaccessible. If your only goal is to enter the grotto, spending several nights on the island gives you more flexibility to try again on another day; it does not guarantee favorable weather. During a short stay in Naples, keeping a day flexible enough to swap for a city visit may also make it easier to reorganize before departure.
Capri and Anacapri on land
Marina Grande, Capri, and Anacapri are three distinct stops. Marina Grande receives boats from the mainland. The town of Capri lies higher up, around the Piazzetta, while Anacapri occupies another part of the island. The funicular connects the port with central Capri; connections to Anacapri are made notably by bus. Guided tours use their own shuttles to link these stops. Free time at the port does not immediately give you access to every viewpoint.
The Gardens of Augustus offer views of the coastline and the Faraglioni from above. Admission is included in the private day trip and in the tour that starts on the island; it is separate on the selected group tour from Naples. This distinction will matter to travelers who would rather take a scenic walk than add a series of extra transfers. After a boat trip, free time needs to include the climb to the center and the return to the reboarding point.
Monte Solaro is reached by chairlift from Anacapri. Its operator describes panoramic views of the island and sea from a summit at 589 meters. In our selection, the ticket is included in the private day trip, while it remains optional on the other two land-based tours. Allow enough time for the ride up, enjoying the view, and the descent, taking the queue into account. You can then weigh it against the time you want to keep for lunch or exploring Anacapri.
If there is a long wait at the grotto, we would prioritize just one additional land-based visit that you genuinely want to make. The gardens suit those looking for scenery near the center of Capri; the chairlift is a panoramic outing from Anacapri. Villa San Michele is another option, but admission is not included in the offers presented. You will get more out of a stop you have chosen than a personal itinerary you cannot finish before the group’s ferry departs.
The Full Cost of Capri
The first amount to compare is the one that matches your group size and the correct option. A private day trip for a group, an individual price on a group tour, and an excursion departing from Capri cover different services. In this selection, the mainland ferry is included in the two tours that start in Naples; it is booked separately for the one that starts at Marina Grande. Departures from Sorrento require an additional journey if you are staying in Naples.
Next, consider expenses on the island: lunch, drinks, the chairlift, gardens, or other visits, depending on what is included. Boat trips also have local fees or service charges to pay separately. The sandwich included in the package for eight travelers helps you plan a break, without preventing you from choosing an additional meal on shore. To find out what your day will cost, add only the activities you actually plan to do.
At the grotto, the distinction between heritage-site admission and the boat service is essential. The operator confirms that these are two separate components, including when heritage-site admission is discounted or free. The amounts published by the local sources consulted do not fully agree; it is better to check the total being charged during your stay than to rely on an old figure as a guaranteed price. Offers that include the visit simplify this expense, subject to access conditions.
Also bring a suitable means of payment for on-site expenses, and ask which charges will be collected before boarding. Excursion prices and currencies come from the central offers displayed on the cards, each with its own conditions. For a future trip, the quote for your chosen date is the reference. Ratings and review counts help you assess the exact product; they do not replace comparing the ferry, language, and included tickets.
The Season and Timetables
The Blue Grotto operator publishes three seasonal opening periods: 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April to September, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from October 1 to 15, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from October 16 to March 31. These hours are subject to conditions, particularly at sea, and may be adjusted. They describe the site’s operating hours, not a guarantee that each commercial excursion departs every day.
In spring and early autumn, a day may combine an island visit with a boat trip, depending on the tours being sold and the weather. In summer, queues at the grotto and travel between the centers take up more room in your planning: water, sun protection, and lunch need to fit into your bag and schedule. Whether to swim also depends on each person’s preference and the captain’s decisions; it is not essential to enjoy a coastal trip.
In winter, the grotto may remain open when sea conditions allow, but closures are frequent according to the local information consulted. The shorter opening period means you should consider visiting the grotto early in the day. Ferries continue to connect the mainland and the island according to their schedules, while tourist boat trips may offer fewer departures. Check crossings and excursions separately for your preferred date rather than assuming a summer offer runs all year.
For a trip in 2027 or later, use this comparison to choose an arrangement, then check the corresponding commercial calendar. We do not have a confirmed schedule of future departures for every option. A year-round activity does not need to be presented as a specific annual edition: what matters is the service actually being sold for your dates, including its departure port and weather policy.
Children and Mobility
When traveling with children, the length of the wait and transfers between boats matter just as much as the permitted age listed on a page. The interior visit requires you to sit low and lean forward, following the boatman’s instructions. A stroller that can be used for part of the itinerary says nothing about access to the rowboat. Before booking, ask how this transfer, your child’s belongings, and the other movements included in your package will be handled.
The same applies if you have mobility difficulties or back problems. The road approach involves steps; the boat approach requires a change of vessel. Group tours from Naples note restrictions for travelers with reduced mobility. A private guided day may make it easier to discuss the pace, but it does not change whether the grotto is open or the characteristics of the local boat. Describe your needs specifically to the provider.
Assistance for the crossing must be arranged separately with the ferry company. Caremar currently asks passengers who need special assistance to give at least forty-eight hours’ notice. This arrangement covers boarding and travel on its services; it does not qualify the shuttles, sloping streets, or island visits. The right contact therefore depends on each step, especially if you book the ferry yourself.
On a small boat, also confirm that the equipment suits each participant’s age and needs. Bring water, sun protection, a layer for the crossing, and suitable shoes for getting around on land. For swimming, add your towel and any equipment that is not provided. You can keep your bag light: the visits already involve several climbs, boardings, and group meet-ups, and bulky gear will not improve the day.
Booking Checklist
When choosing, we would focus on four lines in the booking summary: departure point, language, grotto inclusions, and the alternative plan. These quickly distinguish the five arrangements. A French-speaking family will first look at the private option with a French-speaking guide; a traveler arranging their own ferry will compare the departure from Marina Grande; a stay in Sorrento makes the two boat trips more relevant.
Next, factor in the conditions specific to your trip: the maximum acceptable duration, whether you need free time, the number of participants, and the required return time. For a cruise stop in Naples, provide the ship’s schedule and arrange a tour compatible with reboarding. The presence of a “cruise port” option alone does not mean that every stop is suitable. Your return buffer must take the port and the ship’s requirements into account.
Finally, keep your confirmation and useful contact details available offline. The instructions from the guide, ferry company, and skipper may refer to different meeting points. Reviewing these few details the day before can prevent you from going to the wrong pier or waiting for a pickup that does not serve your accommodation. Once these choices are settled, you can focus on the sea, the light in the grotto, and the places in Capri you actually want to discover.
FAQ
Can you visit the Blue Grotto directly from Naples?
Excursions departing from Naples first reach Capri, then arrange the approach to the cave and boarding a small local rowboat. The selected group tour and private day trip include the round-trip crossing in their mainland-departure options. An offering with a meeting point at Marina Grande starts on Capri: the ferry from Naples must then be purchased separately. So check the departure location before comparing prices.
Which option should I choose for a French-speaking guide?
Private day trip 131843P1 offers commentary in French, which you must select with the correct departure option. It includes the ferry from the mainland, private ground transportation, the cave, the chairlift and the Gardens of Augustus. The selected group tour from Naples is in English; the tour that starts on Capri offers English or Spanish. The language should appear in your booking confirmation.
Is entry to the cave guaranteed with an excursion?
Entry depends on sea conditions and access decisions at the time of the visit. It may be prevented even if the ferry has reached the island. Providers then arrange the alternative specified in their terms, such as a coastal tour when navigation is still possible. Check separately the rules for a cave closure and those for a full excursion cancellation: they do not automatically trigger the same treatment.
How long do you spend inside?
The local guide Capri.net says visitors spend about five minutes in the cave. The approach, wait and passage in the rowboat take much longer, with queues that can reach two hours in high season. So a one-hour stop in an itinerary does not mean an hour beneath the cave’s ceiling. When choosing an excursion, focus on how much time is allowed for this wait and what other activities make up the day.
Does an island tour include the Blue Grotto ticket?
It depends on the offering. The selected land tours include admission, while the two boat trips from Sorrento charge for it separately. Local operator Motoscafisti also distinguishes its approach transport from the rowboat service and heritage-site admission. A stop in front of the cave gives you the chance to visit if it is open; it does not prove that all tickets have already been paid for. Inclusions must be stated explicitly.
Can you reach the cave without an organized excursion?
Yes: you can book a ferry to Capri, then reach the site by boat from Marina Grande or by ground transport to Anacapri and the cave. The final approach is always by rowboat. This option lets you choose how to spend the rest of the day, but you need to arrange the connections and leave enough time to get back to the port. Staying overnight on Capri makes this flexibility easier if visiting the cave is your priority.
Is the Blue Grotto open in winter?
The site manager lists opening hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from October 16 to March 31, subject to weather and sea conditions. Winter access is therefore possible, though local information reports frequent closures. Check the conditions on the day and whether an excursion is available on your date. The fact that a ferry to Capri is running does not mean the cave will be accessible or that a particular sightseeing boat will be operating.
Do you need to stay overnight in Sorrento for the boat trips?
It is not essential, but it makes getting to the meeting point much easier. The two boat trips presented depart from Sorrento or Piano di Sorrento, and the pickup offered by the second covers a local area that needs to be confirmed. No transfer from Naples is listed for these products. From a hotel in Naples, you need to add the journeys to the peninsula and allow extra time; tours starting in Naples combine the necessary connections more directly.
Can you swim in the Blue Grotto?
The authorized visit takes place by rowboat. The boats use a very narrow passage, and the local operator notes that access is prohibited when the cave is closed. Save swimming for stops chosen by the captain during a boat trip, when possible. Swimming to the entrance to get around a closure exposes you to sea conditions and boat traffic; it is not a substitute for an organized visit.
Do children get a free visit?
Free admission or discounts for the heritage-site ticket must be distinguished from the rowboat service, the ferry and the excursion price. The site manager offers free heritage-site admission for minors, but this does not make all transportation free. Each provider also applies its own age categories and participation requirements. Enter each child’s actual age, then check the total cost and how the rowboat boarding is organized before purchasing.
